Recap / Regular Show S 06 E 19 Gamers Never Say Die

Go To

In this homage to The Goonies, Mordecai and Rigby find an old gaming system from their childhood and beat an unwinnable level from a video game they used to play. Once they do, the game shows them a map to an exclusive golden patch that'll prove they're the greatest gamers ever, leading the two on a quest to claim them — and Benson to track them down for stealing his car battery.

This episode has the following tropes

  • Affectionate Parody: Of The Goonies with a little bit of Indiana Jones
  • Continuity Nod: The Knight from Eggscellent returns and mention the diner that held the egg challenge has gone out of business which is why he's guarding the way to the golden gamer patches.
  • It's Personal: Benson when he finds Mordecai and Rigby stole his car battery to keep the TV and game system powered for their quest. Despite Skips offering to just give him another one and save all the trouble.
  • Say My Name/Skyward Scream: "MORDECAI AND RIGBY!!!!"
  • Shout-Out: The Tonare 3500 is an obvious reference to the Atari 2600. The startup screen is also reminiscent of Sega's classic Title Scream intro, with the Tonare logo also resembling Sega's.
  • Stern Chase: Benson doggedly tracks Mordecai and Rigby to punish them for his stolen car battery.
  • Treasure Hunt Episode: The treasure in this case being golden patches earned by beating a certain video game level.
  • Treasure Map: There's one at the end of the game.
  • We Are Not Going Through That Again: After the spirit of the game designer is released, he shows another map to an even bigger treasure. Benson, however, isn't having any of it and drags Mordecai and Rigby away.
