Recap / Phineas And Ferb Wheres Perry Part One

Go To

The Flynn-Fletcher family are heading to Africa for their vacation. Unfortunately, Perry has to stay behind when duty calls. It turns out that Doof was faking through his evil plot so he could turn his latest inator on Major Monogram and turn him evil. Unfortunately, his inator ends up hitting Carl instead. Meanwhile, in Africa, Candace tries to call Jeremy.

Part 1 of 2

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Grandma Betty Jo apparently confuses Africa for Arkansas.
  • Actually Quite Catchy: Doof is seen bobbing his head along with Evil Carl's song and even at times doing backup vocals. Of course, at the time, he is unaware that Evil Carl will be playing him.
  • Alas, Poor Yorick: When Evil Carl first appears, he is seen caressing a human skull. Lampshaded by Doof when he asks whose skull it is.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Carl gets hit by the inator, Doof is seen laughing while looking through his binoculars. But it turns out he is actually laughing at his neighbor's cat and cannot see OWCA from where he is standing even with binoculars.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: When Carl is hit by the inator, he borrows Candace's "Meap" squeal.
  • Brains Versus Brawn: Baljeet and Buford's argument throughout the episode.
    Buford: Move over!
Baljeet: But I got here first. Why should I sit in the middle seat...
(Buford lifts up Baljeet and moves him to the middle seat)
    Buford: There's your reason.
Baljeet: You know, you cannot solve every with your muscles. Sometimes you need brains.
Buford: Yeah, like for dinner. Little bit of garlic, a little bit of butter, brains are delicious.
  • Call-Back: Isabella thanks some Africans for teaching her the Amudu while the teacher thanks her for teaching them the "Izzy's Got the Frizzies".
  • Chorus Girls: Carl's song, "Evil for Extra Credit", uses girls who are dressed in sexy versions of Carl's outfit and glasses.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends on a big one. Perry is zapped by multiple inators and apparently disintegrates, Phineas, Ferb, Isabella, Baljeet, and Buford are falling into the gorge, Candace thinks Jeremy wants to break up with her, and Linda and Lawrence find out that they don't have reservations for dinner in a fancy restaurant. All are treated as if they're equally horrible.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Doof sees a robot version of Linda, remembering that he dated her once, and regrets it believing that she was a robot all along.
  • Continuity Nod: The last inator that is seen during the "weak" montage is the Smell-inator from "Attack of the 50 Foot Sister".
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: When the gang reaches the uncharted gorge, Phineas hums a fanfare often heard on the show, which everyone applauds.
Buford: He's much better than Irving.
  • Eat That: Isabella is informed that one of the patches in the African chapter of the Fireside Girls is a Grub Eating Patch.
    Sankei: Eat grubs. Yuck, right?
Adumu Teacher 2: I don't remember having to do that when I was a Fireside Girl.
  • Evil Is Petty: Evil Carl would have called Agent P himself since he works for the agency, but he got Monogram to do it instead. Why? He's over his minutes. (Apparently, OWCA is too cheap to give him unlimited.)
  • Kansas City Shuffle: Doofenshmirtz built an inator that'd keep everyone's gym equipment locked away so people would be too out of shape to prevent him from taking over. When Perry arrives, Doofenshmirtz accidentally destroys it by pressing the self-destruct button. After Perry leaves, Doof reveals to Norm that was just to trick Perry into thinking he wasn't up to anything else. Doof's real plan was to use another inator to turn Major Monogram evil so he'd take over the O.W.C.A.
  • Long List: Doof shows Evil!Carl all of his inators, but Evil!Carl dismisses every one of them as "weak". The list gets to the point where Carl just says "Weak!" after Doof keeps saying "The..." and even before he says anything at all.
Doofenshmirtz: Oh, come on! I was just inhaling!
  • Mirrors Reflect Everything: When Monogram is sunbathing on OWCA's roof, and he looks in his hand mirror and asks Carl if his uvula is large, pointing it at Carl, causing the ray of the inator to bounce off the mirror and hit Carl.
  • Noodle Incident: Ignatius calls Lawrence "Hairy Larry". Lawrence only says the nickname comes from him not having any photos between 1976 and 1979.
  • Pick a Card: When Candace doesn't have any calling cards for international calls so she can call Jeremy, Buford humors her.
Buford: I've got cards. Pick a card, any card!
Candace: Don't you magic me, mister!
Buford: Who's magickin'? I'm just givin' away cards.
  • Playing Sick: Perry does this to get out of his vacation so he can go on his mission.
Grandma Betty Jo: What do you say when a platypus sneezes?
Grandpa Clyde: I'll go check my Monotreme Manners book.
Grandma Betty Jo: You have a book on monotreme manners?
Grandpa Clyde: You don't know everything about me.
  • Same Language Dub: Edi Gathegi voices Iggy in the American version, but Lenny Henry voices him in the UK dub.
  • Series Continuity Error: Doof claims to have no knowledge of OWCA having an intern, even though in "Spa Day", not only does he know about Monogram's "little friend, the intern", he somehow also knows about his secret identity as "Dr. Coconut".
  • Shout-Out: "On the Savannah" begins with a parody of the opening shot from The Lion King.
  • Slow Clap: Perry arrives at the headquarters to save Monogram, but is immediately trapped by Evil Carl, who proceeds to clap in self-indulgement.
    Monogram: Carl, you slow-clapping fiend!
  • Smokescreen Crime: Doofenshmirtz uses a device that locks away everyone's gym equipment with the supposed intent of making his enemies too out of shape to stop him from taking over the world. After Perry the Platypus destroys the device and leaves, Doofenshmirtz reveals that this scheme was just a smokescreen to distract from his true goal: planting a mind control device on Major Monogram, the head of O.C.W.A.
  • Special Guest: Vanessa Williams voices the flight attendant and Harold Perrineau (Dawson from Lost) plays the Maitre d' at Chez Afrique.
  • Stealth Pun:
Lawrence: Well, dear, it looks like everyone's found something to do, and Chez Afrique dinner reservation's in an hour.
    Linda: I can't wait. I'm Chez Ah-freaking out.
    Lawrence: Oh, good one.
  • Stock Audio Clip: Buford's voice clip, "A little bit of garlic, a little bit of butter" is used twice.
  • To Be Continued: Despite the dramatic cliffhangers of Jeremy seemingly breaking up with Candace, Phineas and the gang falling, and Perry disappearing, this is only shown after it is revealed that Linda and Lawrence did not have a reservation at the restaurant, kind of undercutting the seriousness, which is the point.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: In a gag at the African airport, a southern couple is waiting for their luggage when they see Candace pop out of the conveyer belt in this pose. They attempt to collect her, but the mother informs the father that their daughter is blonde. Immediately after, they collect their daughter, who is also doing this because she was on an 18-hour flight with no cell service.
  • The Unreveal: When Monogram sees a box of straws, it gives him an idea, a good one this time, not like the one he had about the— But it cuts to the next scene before we find out what his bad idea was.
  • Villain Song: Evil Carl gets "Evil for Extra Credit", which shows off Tyler Alexander Mann's surprisingly good singing voice, lampshaded by Monogram.
  • Visual Gag: Phineas laments that Perry would have loved sitting on the tarmac for no reason. Then the camera pulls out to show Ferb wearing five neck pillows in the shades of Perry.
  • Wham Episode: The episode ends with Phineas, Ferb, and their friends falling into a gorge, Jeremy apparently breaking up with Candace, Perry suddenly vanishing after being hit by several inators at the same time, and the restaurant apparently losing Lawrence and Linda's reservation!
  • You Fool!: Evil Carl often calls Doof this.
