Recap / Phineas And Ferb The Lizard Whisperer

Go To

Phineas and Ferb find a chameleon in the backyard who grows to giant size, thanks to Doofenshmirtz, and starts running all over town. Meanwhile, Doofenshmirtz takes a guitar lesson with Jeremy in order to learn a song that will summon aliens.

Tropes:

  • Ancient Astronauts: Doofenshmirtz discovers that Ancient Egyptians summoned aliens with their music in order to recruit help on building the PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT!!!!!!!! and he plans to use the exact same melody to summon his very own army of alien minions.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: The Gigantinator causes Steve to grow to giant size.
  • Big Electric Switch: Doofenshmirtz uses one as a light switch for his building. The building's actual light switch is instead wired to his Gigantinator ray.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Whenever Jeremy arrives at Doofenshmirtz's lesson, Doof insists that Jeremy call him "Dr. Doofenshmirtz" rather than "Mr. Doofenshmirtz". Similarly, Major Monogram insists on being called "Major" rather than "Mister".
    • During Doof's lesson, Doofenshmirtz starts explaining his evil scheme to Jeremy and apologizes for rambling during the lesson; Jeremy says "I charge by the hour, so knock yourself out". Jeremy says the same thing to Monogram after he starts rambling about how he works with animals as the leader of a secret government agency.
  • Continuity Nod: Jeremy's guitar case has the picture of Candace that was taken at the end of "The Bully Code"
  • Don't Explain the Joke: When Doofenshmirtz traps Perry with a chain and says, "You don't stand a chance against my heavy metal gear! Get it... because..."
  • Failed a Spot Check: When Candace brings Linda to the backyard only to see the frozen yogurt disappeared, neither of them even notice Steve's giant footprint.
  • Flag Drop: Played with. As Ferb says his Rousing Speech to not give up their search for Steve, a truck with the British flag on its side parks behind him.
  • Hollywood Chameleons: Steve the chameleon is able to flawlessly blend in with his surroundings that he becomes practically invisible; Candace attempts to bust the brothers by showing Linda the giant chameleon, but she doesn't notice anything thanks to Steve blending in (although earlier in the episode, the boys are able to find Steve because he casts a giant shadow). It's most easily triggered when he's freaked out by loud noises.
  • Insistent Terminology: When Steve grows to giant size, Phineas insists on calling him a "dinosaur" rather than a "giant chameleon"; the reason? "Dinosaur" sounds cooler. Inverted later when Steve goes on a rampage; everyone assumes he's a dinosaur and Phineas is quick to point out that he's actually a giant chameleon.
  • Jurassic Farce: The shots of Candace looking at Steve through her rearview mirror and of the glass of water rumbling next to Candace while Steve stomps in her direction are parodies of similar scenes in the first Jurassic Park film.
  • Magic Music: Doofenshmirtz discovers that Ancient Egyptians use a special melody to summon aliens to do their bidding.
  • Now Do It Again, Backwards: Perry calls off the alien invasion that Doofenshmirtz summoned with his Ancient Egyptian music, by playing the same melody in reverse, causing the aliens to leave back to where they came from.
  • Oh, Crap!: Perry reacts this way when he overhears Jeremy talking about "his friend's pet platypus", so he hides and hangs from a plunger on the edge of the building until Jeremy leaves.
  • One-Steve Limit: When looking for Steve in the middle of the city, they shout his name, and constantly get responses by other Steves of Danville. It's then Parodied when the boys and Isabella encounter a Steve convention filled with people called Steve. The writing crew are apparently avid TV Tropes fans.
  • Pyramid Power: After visiting Egypt, Doofenshmirtz discovers a brick that says that the PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT!!!!! were built by aliens, and that the Egyptians used a melody to summon the aliens to do their bidding. Therefore, he decides to use the same melody, played by him on his guitar, to summon the aliens so they can help him take over the Tri-State Area.
  • Rejection Affection: Vanessa briefly appears, and is immediately smitten with Jeremy and asks if he knows any songs by "the Scraping Fangs", but Jeremy says he is not into heavy metal, so she leaves.
  • Rockers Smash Guitars: Doofenshmirtz smashes his guitar out of frustration after he is defeated.
  • Rousing Speech: Ferb, of all characters, manages to give an impressively long speech to encourage Phineas and Isabella to not give up and continue searching for Steve, as well as rally the denizens of Danville into a rally to find Steve. It is his longest consecutive speaking role in the entire series.
Ferb: Give up?! Give up?! The day may come when we'll give up on fruitless searches after a mere eleven minutes, but that day is not today! The day may come when our favorite reptile may be lost from our memories and his enduring love of mushrooms forgotten, but that day is not today! Today we search! We will search for him in the streets, we will search for him in the trenches, we will search for him in the alleys and the mini-malls and the cul-de-sacs of this fair land. We'll search for him in the multilevel car parks and municipal recreational facilities. And we few. We happy few. We small band of brothers — and girl from across the street. We shall not cease 'til he is found!
  • Shout-Out: The title is a reference to The Horse Whisperer.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Every time Doof mentions the aforementioned PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT!!!!!, he does it at full volume. He also emphasizes the ''"TRI-STATE AREA!"' parts during his ramblings.
Doofenshmirtz: I don't know why I say that loud.
  • This Billboard Needs Some Salt: The rampaging Steve notices Doofenshmirtz's Amplifinator that he uses to broadcast his music to aliens, which conveniently is shaped like a giant mushroom, so he walks up to it, rips it off the Doofenshmirtz building and eats it, much to Doofenshmirtz's chagrin.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: As the boys quickly discovered, Steve has a fondness for mushrooms.
