Recap / Phineas And Ferb The Doonkelberry Imperative

Go To

When everyone in the Tri-State Area is out of doonkelberries, Phineas and Ferb decide to visit Drusselstein to get some. While there, they discover the reason there are no doonkelberries outside of Drusselstein: all of the country's processing plants have been shut down due to a dispute over the country's antiquated power system. At the same time, Candace attempts to look for a library book about the scientific method in order to use it to bust her brothers, but it's already been checked out by Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Luckily for her, Vanessa happens to be in the library, and she offers to take her to her dad's place to look for the book. Meanwhile, Doofenshmirtz has come to visit Drusselstein to renew his driver's license, and he is forced to retake Drusselstein's driving test, much to his horror.

Tropes

  • Awesome, but Impractical: The O.W.C.A.'s experiment to mail Perry a letter that shows Major Monogram's face in real time and a box containing the items Perry needs for his mission. Monogram lampshades this, noting that someone else could have picked up or opened the mail before Perry did.
  • Closer than They Appear: At one point, a semi-truck follows Doofenshmirtz. It looks like it's far away in the rear-view mirror, but it turns out that the truck is actually tailgating Doof's car.
  • Continuity Nod: Candace explains to Vanessa she wants to research disappearing objects, and Vanessa assumes she means like socks in the dryer, but Candace explains objects such as rollercoasters, buildings to the moon, and stampeding cattle.
  • Department of Major Vexation: The Drusselstein DMV. It even has its own Evil Jingle: "Drusselstein Department of Motor Vehicles and Goat Registration!"
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: At D.E.I., Vanessa sings the Evil Jingle, "Lookin' for books at my dad's place."
Candace: Why are you singing that?
Vanessa: It's just something we do.
  • Driving Test: Doofenshmirtz has to take the Drusselstein driving test, which is extremely dangerous and involves jumping the car, avoiding pedestrians, and driving off an extremely tall ramp.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • Candace and Vanessa fail to notice that Doofenshmirtz's inventions are causing objects in the background to vanish as they search for the book.
    • In the end, Linda looks at the sky and thinks it's overcast; little did she know it was Drusselstein stretched over Danville which Baljeet forgot to undo.
  • Funetik Aksent: Ze "Drusselstein Driving Test Valtz" is sung mitt a German ak-sent.
Use your hands ven you steer her
    Zen check in ze mirror
Vat you see may be clearer
    Don't lay on ze horn!
    See ze traffic cop bossing
    Pedestrians crossing
    Never drive vile you're flossing
    You'll vish you veren't born!
  • Here We Go Again!: When Phineas and Ferb solve the power system dispute, the people of Drusselstein are grateful, and decide to make the day a national holiday. Unfortunately, people are split over whether they should call it "Phineas and Ferb Day" or "Ferb and Phineas Day", and the country is once again divided into two factions.
  • Horny Vikings: This marks the first appearance of the semi-recurring "The viking is right!" gag.
  • I'm Okay!: A woman says this after she nearly gets run over by Doofenshmirtz's car.
  • Musical Slapstick Montage: "The Drusselstein Driving Test Waltz" plays over footage of Doofenshmirtz's questionable driving as he takes his highly dangerous driver's test.
  • Not So Stoic: Even Perry is terrified by the Drusselstein driving test.
  • Notary Nonsense: At one point, Perry is so frightened of Doof's driving test that he starts making out his will.
  • Quaking with Fear: Perry after the driver's test is over.
  • Ruritania: Drusselstein.
  • Scary Flashlight Face: The clerk at the Drusselstein DMV points a flashlight to her face and flickers it as she tells Doofenshmirtz that he will have to retake his driver's test.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After unknowingly making the trebuchet disappear with one of Doof's inators, Candace ultimately leaves D.E.I. and tells Vanessa the scientific method is flawed.
  • Shout-Out: At the end of the message, Major Monogram warns Perry that "This message will self-destruct."
  • Siege Engines: Phineas and Ferb decide to build a trebuchet to shoot themselves across the Atlantic Ocean to Drusselstein. Isabella asks them whether or not they will be using a gravity or tension spring design; it turns out that one of her Fireside Girls patches is the Medieval Siege Engine Patch. note
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: The "Drusselstein Driving Test Waltz", a bouncy, up-tempo waltz set to one of the most dangerous driving tests in the world.
  • Space Master: Phineas and Ferb build an device that can bend the fabric of space-time in order to allow their trebuchet to shoot them across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Special Guest: John Hodgman plays the Drusselstinian doonkleberry stand man.
  • Subverted Catchphrase: When Baljeet dewarps the world, Doof plunges into the ocean and says, "Curse you, conceptual elasticity of space-time!"
  • Take That!: To American politics. The country of Drusselstein is not able to get anything done because two factions are arguing over whether or not the goats powering the country should turn to the left or the right.
  • This Page Will Self-Destruct: Major Monogram's letter (and the box that contained Perry's rumpkinhosen as well).
  • Unflattering ID Photo: Remember this hilarious photo of Doof from "The Lemonade Stand"? Turns out it is also Doof's driver license photo.
  • Your Mom: As the Drusselstenians are arguing, one yells "Filthy clockwisers!", and another yells "Yo mama!".
