This episode provides examples of the following tropes:
- Accidental Misnaming: Sister Ingalls, in the flashback, calls Sister Constance "Sister Kennedy" after she makes a play on his famous speech.
- A Day in the Limelight: Sister Ingalls.
- All Periods Are PMS: Piper invokes this to get out of a write-up when she snaps at a guard after a particularly stressful phone call.
- The Bus Came Back: Vause returns, a free woman.
- Off on a Technicality: Vause's problem also returns — the drug boss she testified against had a mistrial because evidence was mishandled. And it appears that he didn't like her snitching on him ...
- Pun: Sister Ingalls' comment that "Bad 'habits' die hard."
- Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Non-lethal example. Boo tries to join up with Vee after betraying Red to her, but Vee declines, noting that she doesn't like snitches.
- Shout-Out: To John F. Kennedy's famous speech. "Ask not what Christ can do for you, but what you can do for Christ."
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: In the aftermath of her beatdown, Poussey stands up to Vee."You're like a pedophile without the sex. And I bet the real players just laugh in your face."
- Why Don't Ya Just Shoot Him?: Upset that Vee's pressure is causing Red to neglect the greenhouse, the Golden Girls plot to kill Vee. Unfortunately, Taslitz fails to wear her glasses, shivs the wrong girl, and is sent to the SHU for no gain.
- Witness Protection: Vause is not in it despite the drug boss walking free.
