Recap / Ninjago S4E35 "The Invitation"

Go To

After having gone their separate ways, the Ninja must reunite when they receive an invitation to a tournament, as well as a hint that Zane is alive.

Airdate: February 23, 2015

The episode starts off with Lloyd beating a group of Nindroids in what turns out to be a simulation inside Borg Tower. After Zane's death, Kai, Cole, Jay and Lloyd have apparently all gone their separate ways, Jay working as a game show host, Cole as a lumberjack and Kai as a fighter in the new Slither Pit arenas set up by the Serpentine. Lloyd is the only one of the four remaining ninja to continue training, but Wu urges him to seek out the other ninja.

They meet up in Chen's Noodle House, where, after significant arguing about Zane, the place is robbed by a gang with snake-themed tattoos. After being beaten by the ninja, the gang runs off into an alley, leaving behind a mysterious note and several mysterious fortune cookies, indicating that the ninja must go to the docks and compete in Chen's Tournament of Elements if they wish to see Zane again. The ninja decide to follow the instructions, but due to Lloyd leaving behind a takeaway meal from Chen's Noodle House, Garmadon realizes something is wrong and decides to follow Lloyd. At the docks a large crowd of people has gathered.

Eventually, a large ship arrives, with a mysterious red-and-purple garbed figure named Clouse welcoming the crowd aboard. Garmadon shows up to tell the ninja not to board, but Lloyd tells him that they must, whereupon Garmadon decides to come too, throwing one of the Mooks on board the ship into the water to make room. On board, Garmadon explains that he knows Chen and that all of those who were invited were descendants of the Elemental Masters who have unlocked their powers. Kai gets a crush on an orange-clad girl named Skylor and when she is treated rudely by the black-and-silver-themed Karlof, Kai proceeds to fight Karlof. Jay, Cole, and Lloyd attempt to intervene, but Garmadon tells them Kai needs to be the one to end what he started. The two brawl all over the ship until Clouse calls them off. The woman apologises to Kai and helps him up, but unbeknownst to him, a strange energy flows from his arm and into hers.

Clouse announces that they've reached Chen's island, then calls Chen, telling him that Garmadon has returned. Garmadon states he swore to never return and while the Ninja wonder where they will find Zane, Chen checks up on the newly-revealed Titanium Ninja being kept under lock and key. As Chen says he holds all the cards, Zane is shown awakening in his cell opening his eyes.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Blatant Lies: Lloyd attempts to throw Garmadon off his trail by claiming he was going fishing, while not packing a fishing pole.
  • Cool Old Guy: Garmadon kicking the Mook off the boat — less to make room (because of course there was room for him), and more to make a point. He may no longer be Lord Garmadon, but he is not to be trifled with.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Kai's fight in the underground arena lasts less than ten seconds thanks to his spinjitzu. His opponent had been planning on throwing the fight anyway, but had misheard when. Though given it was a Skullkin up against Kai...
  • Foreshadowing: When Kai realizes that Nya must also be descended from the Elemental Masters by virtue of being his sister, he points out that Nya seems to be a Muggle Born of Mages, which Garmadon doesn't seem sure is the case. While it doesn't receive payoff this season, it does in the next season.
  • Lost Food Grievance: Cole starts the fight in the restaurant already hangry, since Lloyd wouldn't let anyone eat until he'd spoken to them and Kai showed up late, and gets more incensed when food he'd been planning on eating gets knocked to the floor.
  • Oh, Crap!: Garmadon sees a takeout box from Chen's Noodle House and realizes what's going on.
  • Power Fist: Karlof wields two of them in combat.
  • Put on a Bus: Borg notes that P.I.X.A.L. has been missing since after the memorial for Zane.
  • Putting the Band Back Together: Lloyd attempts to do this.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: The Ninja wearing different robes (Kai in the training gi, Cole in the DX gi, Jay in the ZX gi, and Lloyd in the Techno gi) represents how they've been divided after Zane's death.
  • Uniqueness Decay: The Ninja realize they aren't the only Elemental Masters in the world despite Wu and Garmadon acting as if they were. When they actually call out Garmadon on this, Garmadon remarks that he and Wu wanted to lead the Ninja to think they were special.
  • Wham Shot: Zane awakening in a cell, revealing that Chen wasn't just lying to get the Ninja to the tournament.
  • You Didn't Ask: Garmadon's other reason for not telling the Ninja about the Elemental Masters—they never thought to ask where their powers came from and simply assumed they just had them.
