Recap / Monster Rancher S2 E1: Tiger's Battle with Destiny

Go To

Tiger accepts a solo challenge from his brother, Gray Wolf. They will duel to the death at a location of Gray Wolf's choosing. Smelling a trap, Genki and the others tag along, but find themselves holding off Gray Wolf's Cabalos troops.

Tiger attempts to reason with his brother, but Gray Wolf is beyond arguing—and when it's apparent they're tied, he resorts to blinding him. Viciously smacking Tiger around, Gray Wolf goes in for the kill, but pauses when Genki blocks his way. Gray Wolf goes to kill Genki as well... and Tiger charges, impaling Gray Wolf with his horn.

Gray Wolf dies wishing they could go back to when they were pups, and Tiger mourns his brother... and meanwhile, Moo has found his original, draconic body.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Aloof Big Brother: Tiger acted this way towards Gray Wolf in hopes of toughening him up. Unfortunately for both, it's Deconstructed: rather than making Gray stronger, he developed an inferiority complex and came to believe his big brother looked down on him. Moo was able to twist that to his own ends.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Tiger hits Gray's when he suggests that he hasn't changed at all since they were pups, still trying to scheme his way out of trouble.
    • Happens again when Tiger takes his temporary blinding in stride, calmly remarking that he was the one who taught Gray how to pull off that technique in the first place.
    • And again when Tiger asks him to take his life if he wishes, but spare the rest of the Searchers.
Gray Wolf: [snarling] That mangy group is so important—?!
  • Big Damn Heroes: Golem shoulder-checks the Cabalos away when they try to dogpile Tiger, heralding the arrival of the reset of the team.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The third of Moo's Big Bad Four has fallen... but Tiger lost his little brother in the process. Making matters worse, Moo has just discovered his original body's location.
  • Boisterous Weakling: When a single Cabalos arrives to relay Gray Wolf's challenge to the group, Suezo makes a big show out of challenging him, only to panic and retreat behind Holly once he roars at him.
  • Cain and Abel: Gray Wolf and Tiger, respectively.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Gray Wolf tells Tiger that they'll settle their feud by fighting using only their claws, but then whips him in the face with his tail.
  • Come Alone: Gray Wolf's challenge orders Tiger to do so.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Tiger isn't happy when the others show up; given the way he snaps at Genki, it's implied he actually believed that Genki and the rest weren't planning to come after him.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Tiger tried exercising this with his younger brother, though he occasionally showed softer behavior. Sadly, this didn't work out the way he intended.
  • Dirty Coward: Gray Wolf accuses Tiger of being this, claiming that he gave him up in order to protect himself.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Gray Wolf initially reacts this way while dying, before regaining enough of himself for a gentler farewell.
  • Duel to the Death: Between Tiger and Gray Wolf, with Tiger coming out as the victor. ...Relatively speaking.
  • Dying as Yourself: After being fatally wounded, Gray's eyes turn back to normal, and he talks about how he wishes they could go back to when they were pups.
  • Empathic Environment: The snow kicks up after Gray Wolf passes, with his lost disc getting coated while Tiger howls mournfully.
  • Fearful Symmetry: Tiger and Gray Wolf's duel starts off this way, the two of them countering the other's attacks with the exact same moves.
  • Go Through Me: Genki interrupts the brothers' final battle when Tiger is down for the count, placing himself between the two in order to protect him.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong/Right: Tiger sought to make his younger brother stronger through Tough Love. Gray Wolf has become stronger... but as one of Moo's Big Bad Four, and is angry and resentful towards Tiger, having been convinced by his actions and Moo's manipulations that he didn't really care about him.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's hinted that Gray Wolf is jealous of the Searchers due to their importance to Tiger, since he believes that Tiger didn't really care about him.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Gray offers Tiger the chance to bow down before him and become his servant, claiming that he intentionally separated him from the other Searchers in order to spare him some pride.
  • Manipulative Bastard:
    • It's revealed that Moo told Gray Wolf that Tiger intentionally let him take him away, trading his little brother for his own freedom.
    • Gray Wolf makes a bid for this by claiming Tiger offered to join him, betraying the Searchers and handing them over. It's such a blatant lie that Genki and Mocchi immediately burst out laughing at the sheer audacity of it while the rest shrug it off.
  • Might Makes Right: After recovering some food that was stolen from his brother, Tiger claims it for himself, invoking this. He later relents while claiming he wasn't really hungry.
  • Not Brainwashed: Gray Wolf insists that he isn't, despite how his eyes and personality have changed.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Suezo has a brief moment of this when he tries to teleport behind a Cabalos for a sneak attack only to wind up in front of the growling baddie instead.
    • Tiger realizes what's about to happen when Gray Wolf starts swinging around to strike him with his tail, as he was the one who taught him that maneuver in the first place.
  • Please Kill Me if It Satisfies You: Tiger combines this with Last Request, saying that Gray can kill him if he wishes, asking only that he leaves the other Searchers alone afterwards. This only enrages his brother further.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Invoked; Genki grows so frustrated with Tiger's insistence on complying with Gray Wolf's request that he snaps at him, yelling that he doesn't care what happens. Once Tiger leaves with the Cabalos, Genki immediately drops the act, having only behaved that way to try and convince the baddie that they were legitimately just going to let him go alone.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gray Wolf rants furiously during their battle, accusing Tiger of having always thought he was better than him since they were pups.
  • Schemer: Tiger calls him out for this, saying that he's come up with Zany Schemes ever since they were little.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The moment Gray Wolf is fatally injured, the Cabalos promptly abandon him. Gray Wolf isn't surprised by this, commenting that loyalty doesn't go a long way amongst Moo's followers.
  • Single Tear: Tiger sheds one while rejecting Gray Wolf's final offer to join, stating that he'd lose something far too important if he accepted. Gray Wolf sheds one as well during his last words.
  • Snow Means Death: Tiger and Gray Wolf's battle to the death takes place on a snowy mountain just like the one where they grew up.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: Despite agreeing with the others that the challenge is likely a trap, Tiger insists that he needs to settle things with Gray Wolf by himself. Later, he orders them to stay back during the duel despite having been blinded.
  • Tragic Dream: Tiger explains that above all else, he wanted to get strong enough to free his brother from Moo... as Gray Wolf lies dying at his feet.
  • Trap Is the Only Option: Tiger agrees to cooperate with his brother's wishes; the other Searchers go after him out of concern.
