Recap / Monster Rancher S1 E8: After the Rain

Go To

Genki has a terrible nightmare where all of his adventures thus far were just a dream. When he wakes up, he sees that rain has made it impossible to continue for now, so he asks Holly about her family and past. Suezo tries to deflect the question, but Holly agrees to talk about it.

When Holly was very young, her father was exiled from the village because he lost the mayoral election. Her grandfather raised her instead, but she missed her father very much. As Holly grew older, she found Suezo's Mystery Disk and unlocked him. He lived with others in their village, including a Pink Suezo, a Hare Hound, and a Blue Hare.

Life in her village was peaceful, and she hoped it would always stay that way. Until... the forces of Moo came. Naga attacked the village looking for Holly's Magic Stone, and when they resisted, everyone was killed except Holly and Suezo, who were hiding.

Her dying grandfather told her of the legend of the Phoenix, entrusted her with the Magic Stone, and asked for her forgiveness for exiling her father—certain that if he had been there, the outcome of the battle would have been different. And so, Holly and Suezo set off in search of the Phoenix, until they ran into Genki. She never met up with her father, and vowed she'd never cry again.

This episode contains examples of:

  • All Just a Dream: Genki's Catapult Nightmare revolves around him waking up to find he was never pulled into the monsters' world.
  • Always Need What You Gave Up: Holly's grandfather bemoans that if he hadn't sent Holly's father into exile, then his power could've helped defend the village from Naga's forces. As such, he blames himself for the village's destruction.
  • Big "NO!": Holly's reaction upon leaving the cellar and seeing the ruins of her hometown.
  • Dashed Plot Line: As Holly explains, she first unlocked Suezo five years after her father left. Naga's assault came roughly two years after that.
  • Doomed Hometown: Holly's village was razed to the ground.
  • The Exile: Holly's father, who had to leave their village after losing the mayoral election. Holly later learns that this was a pretext — the real reason he was sent away was because of how powerful his ability to wield the Magic Stone was.
  • Foreshadowing: Holly's grandfather believes the destruction of their village was caused because he had Holly's father exiled. As revealed in future episodes, it turns out he's right in more ways than one.
  • Framing Device: While waiting for the rain to clear up, Genki and the other Searchers convince Holly to tell the story about how she and Suezo started on their journey.
  • Gray Rain of Depression: Many of the worst days of Holly's life involved heavy rain.
  • Irony: Holly's grandfather feared that Holly's father's power over the Magic Stone would've brought disaster to the village, but it was the lack of it that led to the village's destruction.
  • It Runs in the Family: Holly's connection with the Magic Stone is so strong that she's able to make trace amounts of the mineral glow just by being around them. Her father had a similarly strong connection with the stones.
  • Not So Stoic: Holly's father acts remarkably nonchalant about his impending exile around his daughter, and when she chases after him, turns to give her one final smile. However, his attempt at reassuring her falters, the smile slipping off his face and becoming a pained frown.
  • Similar Squad: Holly's village had a Suezo, Hare, and Tiger of different breeds than the ones in the main cast. Specifically, a Pink Eye, Hare Hound and Pulscorn (Suezo/Pixie, Tiger/Hare and Hare/Tiger).
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Fleshing out Holly and Suezo's Backstory.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Implied. After the attack, Holly finds her grandfather when she opens the door to what remained of her house and he falls through it.
