Tommy keeps having the same nightmare lately, where he loses his powers in the middle of battle. Lord Zedd is responsible for Tommy's nightmares has Goldar capture Tommy and turn him evil again. Goldar spots a fallen book from Tommy's backpack, which contains an image of a creature that he thinks would make a great monster. Goldar submits it for Lord Zedd's approval and Zedd creates The Robo-Goat. The monster has the possessed Tommy trick his teammates into summoning the powerful Sword Of Power, and turns it over to him. The Rangers attempt to regain it, while Tommy, released from evil, finds his Green Ranger powers are running dangerously low (to the point he can't even summon the Dragonzord).

- Authority Equals Asskicking: Robogoat takes down Tommy with the Sword of Power and later imprisons the others, but Jason beats him in a sword fight and smacks him around so badly that the others are freed.
- Bittersweet Ending/Pyrrhic Victory: The Rangers retrieve the Sword of Power and destroy the monster, but Tommy knows his days as the Green Ranger are coming to an end- which Zedd gladly points out to his minions.
- Dreaming of Things to Come: Tommy's nightmare, which he knows will come true.
- Mood Whiplash: The end scene starts with Tommy lightheartedly saying that he’s burnt out on short stories (which helped to inspire Robogoat) and suddenly changes to somber when he notes the decrease of his powers. It’s really the first non-multi-parter of the MMPR era to end on a not-so-positive note.
- Morton's Fork: Once free of the spell, Tommy can either let Robogoat run free and attack the others, or he can use up more of his failing powers trying to stop him.

- Smarter Than You Look: At the Juice Bar, Bulk's latest idea to try to find the Power Rangers involves scanning equipment that measures high energy levels, which he's certain they would have. The Rangers' increasingly nervous expressions demonstrate he's actually got a good idea this time, and the equipment soon goes off in their presence. Billy just narrowly manages to throw them off the trail by using his scrambler to misdirect them towards Ernie.
- Villainous Demotivator: Lord Zedd reacts to losing Robogoat and the Sword of Power by threatening to clip Goldar's wings for his failures. He also calls Squatt and Baboo useless and suggests they belong in the trash with Rita. The only reason he doesn't do more than yell is because of the consolation of Tommy's powers almost being gone.
