"Dog Show" is one of the season 1 shorts of the new Mickey Mouse (2013) series created by Paul Rudish for the Disney Channel and Disney.com. It's the 11th to air both on the Disney Channel and online.
When Pluto gets injured during a game of fetch with Goofy prior to the big dog show, Mickey enters Goofy into the show. Will Mickey's plan work?
Tropes:
- Bait-and-Switch: As Mickey is realizing Goofy can sub for Pluto, the camera switches between the two three times: Pluto scratches his ears with his hind legs and Goofy scratches his ears with his (shoed) foot. Pluto chews on a bone and Goofy chews a sub sandwich in the same manner. Pluto pants with his mouth open and Goofy drags his butt on the carpet.
- The Cameo:
- One of the judges resembles Clarabelle Cow.
- Another judge looks like the Walrus from Alice in Wonderland.
- Also, the iconic "Pixar Ball" can be spotted at the obstacle course during the dog show.
- John Waters as the dog show MC.
- Cone of Shame: Pluto has to wear one following his injury.
- Friend to All Children: Mickey, of course. His main reason for winning the dog show is to donate the prize money to orphans.
- Furry Confusion: In spite of the Furry Reminder listed below, it's still fairly odd that two of the people involved with the dog show (the woman in charge of the entries and the announcer) are also anthrophomorphic dogs like Goofy, especially when the entry woman looks shocked when Goofy gets up on two legs and tries to sign Mickeys entry slip for him. Considering she is herself a dog that can walk on two legs like Goofy, seeing Goofy get up on two legs and try to sign for Mickey really shouldn't have been that shocking, unless only non anthrophomorphic dogs were allowed to compete, in which case, she should have immediately barred Mickey from entering Goofy.
- Furry Reminder: After all the years of Furry Confusion, the fact that Pluto and Goofy are both dogs is addressed: after Pluto gets injured, Mickey realizes that Goofy is also a dog and enters him into the dog show naked and on all fours.
- Kubrick Stare: Pluto looks...less than pleased after he's injured.
- Mythology Gag: The 1939 Mickey short Society Dog Show, where Mickey also enters Pluto in a dog show, can be viewed as this.
- Sanity Slippage: Mickey, after Goofy screws up one too many times, begins to behave like a dog.
- Say My Name: Mickey screams, "PLUTO!", after said dog falls off a cliff while trying to catch a stick thrown by Goofy and is injured.
