Who knows what he does or why he does it? I know more about the kid who fixes my damn car.

Paul and Pete plan a trip to California to obtain a contract from the aerospace industry. Although Don and Betty are still separated they visit Betty's sick father, and Pete contemplates adoption. Don takes Paul's place in California so he can get away from New York.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Big Apple Sauce: When Don suggests that a doctor from New York might be best for his father in law, the response is "Nearly everything is better" in the Big Apple.
  • Cool Car: Don's in-laws discuss his new car.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Glen towards Betty.
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Pete and his new wife are frustrated, but Pete does not want to adopt.
  • Let the Bully Win: When Pete asks if he can play golf on the business trip, Don says "Only if you lose."
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: She's perhaps too minor of a character to qualify as a "villain," but Pete's mother refers to adopting a child as "drawing from the discard pile" and threatens to disinherit Pete if he does so.
  • Rescue Romance: What Glen is delusionally convinced he can do for a palpably unhappy Betty.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: See under There Is Only One Bed.
  • Shout-Out: Betty sees an action comic book, showing Superman rescuing Lois Lane, which Glen brought in. The kid says he's come to rescue her.
  • There Is Only One Bed: Don and Betty haven't told Betty's family they're separated. So Don lets Betty have the bed, while he sleeps on the floor. A bit later Betty gets out of bed and gets on top of Don on the floor, and they wake up on the floor. However, Betty still doesn't want Don at their house.
