Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E14 "My Brother's Keeper"

Go To

Ella tries to find her missing brother, Jay, and prove that he's not a murderer.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Pierce, to Amenadiel: "And if [being cursed for eternity] is the punishment I get for my crimes, what do you deserve?"
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other:
    • Despite Maze's cold indifference towards Ella, not to mention that she doesn't even bother to get her name right, she kept following Ella and even saved her life when the Corrupt Corporate Executive tried to kill her.
    • Lucifer warns Jay to keep quiet about his past criminal activities and straighten his life for Ella's sake.
    • Amenadiel once again makes clear his intentions to protect Lucifer from himself and pleads with him not to bring down God's wrath by trying to remove Pierce's mark. Lucifer, previously irritated by this, admits that he now recognises that Amenadiel is simply trying to be a good old brother and he does appreciate this, but it won't stop him.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Jay pretends not to know who Ella is in order to protect her from the guy threatening both of them with a gun.
  • Big Brother Worship: Ella adores and looks up to her older brother, Jay.
  • Broken Pedestal: When Ella finds out that Jay really is a crook, she's distraught. She regains some of her admiration when Jay tries to save her life.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Turns out that Amenadiel took his status as the "Fist of God" seriously, and mastered every form of mortal martial arts. He's able to easily defeat Pierce even though Pierce heals from every hit.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When the manager of the hotel where Jay is hiding won't cooperate, Maze starts her usual Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique while Ella appeals to him by asking if he has family members he loves and would be devastated over if he didn't know they were safe. Maze... slightly misunderstands her intentions.
    Maze: Threatening a guy's family? That's hardcore!
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: In the end, Lucifer's initial dismissive assessment of Ella's brother is proven to be the correct one: Jay isn't as morally upright as he wants the family to believe he is.
  • Fun T-Shirt: Ella and Trixie are delighted when they notice that they're wearing the same sushi-patterned t-shirt.
  • Good is Not Nice: During his fight with Pierce, Amenadiel repeatedly goes for a killing blow, either by shooting Pierce in the heart, stabbing him in the abdomen with a broken bottle, or impaling him on a wrought iron spike. Given that Pierce is immortal and Amenadiel is not, this is pretty logical.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Jay promises to get his act together and become worthy of his sister's admiration.
Lucifer: No need to promise, Jay Lopez. Because I'll be watching you. And if you ever disappoint her again... (eyes flash red) ...I'll come for you.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: A dark example. When Amenadiel defends conniving to have Lucifer killed, Pierce snaps that at least he had the guts to kill his own brother himself.
  • Living Forever Is Awesome: Lucifer views immortality as a world of fun, while Pierce is suicidally bored with his.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Pierce is immortal and thus shrugs off grievous wounds the same way most people ignore mosquito bites. Amenadiel is a de-powered Fallen Angel. Both of them are built like tanks and know every martial arts style ever invented. Awesome beatdown ensues that leaves Lux in shambles.
Lucifer: (aghast) What does the other guy look like?
    Amenadiel: Immortal.
  • "Not So Different" Remark:
    • Jay defends himself on his stealing to protect his family and give the illusion of being a great guy sacrificing all and even "indulging" as payment. Lucifer sees that it's an act and "you're really no different than the rest" and clearly seeing the connection with his own brother.
    • As Pierce points out to Amenadiel, he isn't the only one present who tried to kill his brother; the only difference is that he succeeded.
  • Pet the Dog: Lucifer shows his normally well-hidden caring side, telling Linda that Charlotte is just an innocent woman who got caught up in his mother's schemes and now needs the doctor's help to get her life back on track. He also goes out of his way to protect Ella's image of her brother, forcing him to live up to it, and acknowledges that Amenadiel is just trying to be a good big brother and admits that he appreciates the intent.
  • Protectorate:
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Lucifer's eyes briefly flash a (dim) fiery red when he's talking to Jay. Notably, not even his furious tirade at the Sinnerman drew this kind of reaction from him.
  • Scars Are Forever: Played with. The mark on Pierce's arm has been there for millennia and it won't leave or fade; all other scars (or tattoos), however, fade away in a matter of weeks.
  • Slow Clap: Lucifer pulls this on Jay.
    Lucifer: Never gets old.
  • Take That!: Lucifer calls the diamond industry the best scam that he wasn't involved in, and the owner complains that the business is dying because Millennials aren't putting up with them any more.
  • Talk to the Fist: Pierce's reaction after Amenadiel admits that he was the one who put the curse mark on the former's arm. Pierce them comments that it didn't feel as good as he'd hoped.
Pierce: But you know what they say. If at first you don't succeed... (moves to land another hit)
  • Taught by Television:
  • Title Drop: For once, it's not Lucifer who does this but Amenadiel:
Amenadiel: Because I am my brother's keeper.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Jay. He goes on the run without bothering to tell his police-associated sister what's happened, leaves his wallet at a crime scene, asks for immunity when he has utterly no leverage, points a gun at a cop, and gets in deeper and deeper and is clearly a complete moron. No wonder Lucifer takes to a scared-straight bit at him.
  • Tranquil Fury: Lucifer never raises his voice when he's telling Jay off, but his eyes turn red, something that hasn't happened since he got his wings back.
  • Trauma Button: Linda barely manages to hold herself together when Charlotte comes to her for therapy.
  • Voice of Reason: Incredibly, Maze steps in to keep order when Ella is berating Jay and beating him with a shoe.
