  • Brutal Honesty: Olga's grandmother has no qualms about saying she has "a fool for a son" when she sees what her son's overprotectiveness does to her granddaughter.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: All the girls during the party at the Ingalls' jump to participate in the ballgame, though Nellie claims it's a boy's game, including the more overtly feminine Mary. It's during the game that they demonstrate Olga's ability to walk and run with her new shoes.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Olga's wish – which is to be normal and play normally, like all other kids her age – which Charles fulfills with the help of a special shoe.

  • Missing Mom: Olga lives with her father and paternal grandmother; the latter informs Charles that her son became more overprotective of Olga after his wife's death.
  • My Beloved Smother: Olga's father keeps sheltering her and paranoid about other kids picking on and isolating his daughter. When Charles offers a solution for her lame leg, Jon insists that Charles not intervene for her. He has resigned that his daughter will always have a limited life and doesn't want to give her any false hopes.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Subverted with Olga's father— when he finds out that Charles made Olga a special shoe to liver her legs and make her able to walk and run, he gets into a fight with him for giving her hopes that she can have a full life, which he has concluded she won't have, but once he sees her running and playing with other kids normally, he realizes that Charles' efforts proved fruitful and is clearly thankful afterward.
  • Women Are Wiser: Olga's grandmother is much more open-minded to letting Olga play and after learning about Charles's idea to make special shoes to enable Olga to run, she takes her granddaughter's shoes to him and insists that he go ahead with the plan.
