A man named John Diamond is found beaten and comatose in a park; he subsequently dies from his injuries. The autopsy shows that Diamond had a heart attack, but it's not clear whether this was before or after the fatal blow to his head. Detectives Greevey and Logan trace Jolene Curtis, an escort with whom Diamond had spent the night before he was attacked. Jolene works for an escort agency that masquerades as a catering company called Poppy Catering. Forensic evidence shows that "Cookie" Molina, a driver for Poppy, is the one who beat Diamond. Molina says that Diamond collapsed while he was with Jolene so Jasmine, the agency's madam, called in Molina to dispose of the body. He was trying to make it look like a mugging and didn't know that Diamond was still alive. Jasmine and Molina are both charged with murder.
The owner of Poppy Catering is Laura Winthrop, who's from a prominent society family. She is charged with murder as well but Robinette and Stone are concerned that the jury will be swayed in her favor because of her family's status. Molina tells the jury that Winthrop knew some of her regular clients were in poor health and kinky sex would be risky for them, but she said she didn't care as long as they paid upfront. Stone also highlights the fact that even after several employees at Poppy tested positive for HIV, Winthrop did not contact their clients about it. Winthrop accepts a plea deal for involuntary manslaughter and could be free in as little as two years. Outside the court, the foreman of the jury tells a reporter that she intended to vote to convict Winthrop. Stone and Robinette ponder whether offering a plea was wise, but conclude it's better than the risk of Winthrop walking free.
