Chapter 1 - Three Blind Mice
In 2015, in the Genda Law Offices of Kamurocho, Tokyo, calls are flooding in for rising star Takayuki Yagami after winning a major innocence verdict. Meanwhile, his coworker Masamichi Shintani complains about the fact that not even Yagami's leftover cases don't want him working. But everything goes silent when coworker Saori Shirosaki tells them that Shinpei Okubo, the man who Yagami got the innocence verdict, calls again after police accuse him of stabbing his girlfriend Emi to death and lighting their apartment on fire. Yagami's career ends with Emi's death, and Okubo gets the death sentence.

Three Years Later...

Yagami is now sitting on the side of the street, dressed in filthy clothes with a beard and unkempt hair. However, he's in disguise, now working as a detective with former Tojo Clan Yakuza Masaharu Kaito, who is currently tailing an indebted detective as he's trying to gamble the money he owes on horses. Before confronting the detective, Yagami gets into a fight with some punks, ditching his disguise, and after fighting the detective, Yagami and Kaito leave with the money their client requested. On the way, Yagami internally monologues about Kamurocho, explaining the Tojo Clan, the burglary ring of parkour stuntmen evading the police, and a string of murders surrounding the Yakuza who get their eyes gouged out. When Yagami and Kaito return to their office/Yagami's apartment, Yagami gives him his share of the payment, and after Yagami lets him know he's going to see his former boss and father figure Ryuzo Genda about more work, Kaito suggests he goes get some Dorayaki for the office since Genda's got a sweet tooth. After buying the Dorayaki, a group of thugs assault him to steal them. Yagami defends himself, and a group of yakuza from the Matsugane Family, a Tojo Clan subsidiary, lead by Captain Kyohei Hamura, makes sure the thugs know they assaulted the wrong guy. After they leave, Hamura tells new recruit Kengo everything about Yagami, including the case that ruined his life, and is flippant towards Yagami for a past slight, despite collecting money for him. Yagami makes it to the office, where he meets with Genda, Saori and new lawyer Issei Hoshino. As Yagami asks Genda for more work (With Saori eating almost all the Dorayaki), Genda tries to get him to become a lawyer again, but Yagami refuses thinking he's a Horrible Judge of Character. Genda begrudgingly offers him a divorce case, but Saori gets a call from Shintani notifying the office that Hamura was arrested for the Yakuza killings, and he's to defend him.

Yagami goes to meet with him at Bar Tender, a bar Yagami worked at before becoming a lawyer. After asking some questions, they go to visit Hamura for his side of the story. Hamura continues to be flippant, especially when Yagami admits that if he did do it, he'll make sure he goes down. Hamura admits to having had a fight with the third and latest victim, Toshiro Kume, and after Yagami asks some questions, the evidence clearly points to Hamura with him having dragged Kume into Club Amour and having a flimsy alibi of being at Sauna Goten. Yagami goes to the area surrounding Sauna Goten and finds no way to prove Hamura's alibi. The next day, Yagami goes to find the manager at Amour, who was video recorded as a witness to Hamura dragging Kume into his bar. With the help of Hikikomori tech genius, Makoto Tsukumo, who leads him right to the manager, who admits that Hamura was not really all that brutal to Kume when he was a prisoner.

Afterwards, Yagami returns to his office, where he finds Kaito talking to Prosecutor Mafuyu Fujii, a friend of Saori's who everyone teases is Yagami's girlfriend. She explains that the prosecution office is preparing to press charges against Hamura. As she leaves, Kaito convinces Yagami to walk her home, but is met by The Stoic chief prosecutor Kunihiko Morita and his old rival Keigo Izumida. The next day, Yagami and Kaito meet with Shintani at the office, where they go over the case. Afterwards, Yagami visits the Matsugane family to meet with the head, his second father figure Mitsugu Matsugane. They both muse about Kaito's expulsion last year, and Matsugane tells him where to find the Kyorei hideout in Kamurocho: A front called KJ Art, a place given to them by the enigmatic Kajihira Group. Yagami infiltrates the building as a repairman for a heater he broke, but is eventually found out since he's not the Kyorei's go-to repairman. In the main office, Yagami finds Akira Murase, the fellow Yakuza who was with Kume when he was abducted. After they fight, Murase explained that he fled to round up the rest of the clan to save Kume, but found the place empty. Yagami asks if he'd testify, to which Murase objects, believing Hamura is the killer. Yagami gives Shintani this information, confirmed by video evidence of the Kyorei avoiding video recording.

Yagami and Shintani visit Hamura, to which Yagami points out there are many holes, but Hamura refuses to be strait-forward. Yagami returns to his office and tells Kaito he needs more to work with, like eye-witness testimony. Kaito tells him about a Dirty Cop named Ayabe. He tells him he goes to Tender all the time, but Ayabe is nowhere to be seen. The bartender, Jo Masuda, an old friend of Yagami's, tells him a client that wanted to give Yagami a job is no longer in need. The client was punched by a yakuza, but that yakuza is behind bars. Yagami recalls hearing of a host who was punched by Hamura, and Masuda confirms it was Hamura who punched the client. Yagami goes searching for the host, Seiya, and finds him on a date after finding his other, stood-up dates. Seiya agrees to testify to Hamura punching him, and tells Yagami he was punched in front of Kyushu #1 Star. There, Yagami sees a camera that can add to Hamura's alibi. But there, Murase arrives with a bunch of Kyorei clan. Before the fight, Kaito arrives after a call from Yagami, and the two manage to defeat the Kyorei.

The next day at Hamura's trial, Shintani shows video evidence of Hamura's assault on Seiya, who is suddenly a nervous wreck and can't bring himself to admit Hamura hit him. On break, he reveals that Murase kidnapped his sister and is blackmailing him. Yagami and Kaito storm KJ Art, and manage to save Seiya's sister. Murase prepares to fight, but Yagami points out that Hamura didn't kill Kume...But he knows the man who did. Holes in Hamura's alibi makes it clear he's covering up for the real killer. Seiya manages to rectify his mistake and admits Hamura assaulted him. Izumida tries to bring up his credibility given Seiya has a habit of dragging women along. Shintani counters this by showing the video evidence of Izumida recreating the punch with nearby cops, catching him on a lie that he never saw the video. This earns Hamura an innocence plea. As the court ends, Yagami decides he'll catch the killer in his quest for the truth. He even gives him a name: The Mole. The last person to leave is Ko Hattori, a freelance journalist who tries to get a story out of Yagami. But Yagami refuses since Hattori's article is what ruined Yagami's career.

Chapter 2 - Beneath The Surface
The next day, Yagami and Kaito meet up in an alleyway where the Mole's first victim was found. The victim, Kenkichi Mashiba, died in august. The next victim was found months later in October found in an alleyway on Tenkaichi Street. Yagami heads there on his own, whileKaito gets in touch with Ayabe. There, while Yagami investigates, his phone is stolen by a thief wearing a Jester's mask, a member of the burglary ring. He gives chase with cops behind, believing Yagami is working with the Jester. After the chase nearly leads to Yagami falling off the roof of a building, the thief saves him and returns his phone. Afterwards, Yagami heads over to Genda's office waiting for Ayabe's information. There he let's Genda know he's still investigating the case, but warns Hamura will be mad, even noting he and Shintani are now drinking buddies. Shintani walks in with Hattori, having planned an interview with him. Yagami leaves as Hattori tries to get a photo of him. Afterwards, Yagami gets a call from Kaito to meet him at an indoor fishing pond called Koi Bride. There, they are assaulted by a gang looking for Ayabe, but Kaito accidentally reveals they know Ayabe's a cop. The front desk at Koi Bride reveals that the entire facility is a front to L'Amant, Kamurocho's most well kept secret casino. There, they meet Kazuya Ayabe, who gives them the information they need, but warns to only open the package in private. He also points out that the lead investigator (and the man who arrested Hamura), is his Bad Boss Kuroiwa, so he gives them the information for free. On his way to the office, Yagami is assaulted by four men in ski masks, but he fights them off. Afterwards, Yagami reads over the information, and when Kaito returns, he tells him the cops are as confused as they are. He does point out that he found out the second victim, Kunimura, who left the brothel Konban Wife 2 hours before his death, and was with a girl named Kanae-chan. Yagami decides to go find her, but at Konban Wife, Hamura finds him, with Kengo and three other Matsugane with him. After Yagami balks at his threats, Hamura beats him, especially after Yagami figures out Hamura was behind the assault with Kengo and the other three. Hamura tells him Kanae-chan quit and left Kamurocho, threatening him to stop looking into the murders again. When they leave, Yagami goes to Matsugane, trying to get his help in putting a leash on Hamura. But Yagami is told that Matsugane hasn't been anything but a figurehead for years since Hamura is bankrolling the family, and that the family will listen to Hamura over him if given contradictory orders. Matsugane ends the conversation, and Kengo tells Yagami that Hamura wants to meet with him at Cafe Alps to talk, and threatens him to meet quickly or he'll lose his eyes. At the Cafe, Hamura intimidates all the customers to leave, and the whole family joins Hamura, who chides Yagami for being a snitch. The whole family proceeds to beat Yagami, and Hamura brings him outside with an icepick, tricking him into thinking he'll gouge his eyes out. Yagami breaks out of Hamura's grip and proceeds to fight Kengo and Hamura's right hand man Kojiro Ozaki and winning, but the fighting ends when Hamura forces a terrified Kengo to pull a gun on Yagami. Before the trigger can be pulled, Jester bursts in, saving Yagami. The duo run away from the Matsugane, but the chase escalate to a high speed car chase. When they get away, Yagami demands to know who Jester is, who refuses to answer. Yagami is still mad about Jester stealing his phone earlier, but Jester explains that it was a trick on the cops, making Yagami bait. But Yagami earned Jester's respect when he was able to catch up, and saved Yagami as a show of respect. Yagami suggests he quit being a thief and work for him, but he declines, revealing he knows Yagami's name.

    Chapter 3 - The Stickup
In the alleyway, Yagami tries to call Kaito to warn him to hide, but doesn't get an answer. He heads over to the office, where he finds Kaito having beaten up four Matsugane Family members, except for the fifth: Toru Higashi, who Kaito was Aniki towards. Kaito and Yagami are put on edge by just how different Higashi is from just a year ago, and agree something happened after he leaves, with Yagami noting he seems like a real Yakuza. Kaito asks Yagami to tail Higashi, admitting he's worried about his old friend. He follows Higashi to the Charles Arcade, a Matsugane business Kaito used to run. With a quick disguise, he sneaks in, where he sees Higashi give a kid some money when he complaints about a machine eating his coins to the arcade operator yakuza. After getting in a fight with the clerk for trying to enter the office, Yagami speaks to Higashi. Higashi justifies his new personality, but Yagami points out he's just acting. Yagami notes the last time he saw Higashi was a year ago, when Kaito was expelled.

One Year Ago...

A thief had broken into the Matsugane Family Office and stole 100 million yen under Kaito's watch, meaning he'd have to lose a pinky under Hamura's supervision. Before he could cut his finger off, Yagami and Matsugane stop him. Matsugane thinks it's excessive since it won't get his money back. Yagami also points out that it's also a light punishment given how much money was lost. Hamura reveals that he's having Kaito kicked out of the family as well, having already told the Tojo Clan's main families, which Matsugane notes was very fast of him. Yagami and Matsugane tell Kaito he doesn't have to lose his fingers now given that only Yakuza loses fingers, and Kaito just became a civilian. This is when Hamura began his hatred of Yagami.

Present Time

Yagami leaves asking what happened to the stolen money, but Higashi tells him that's none of his business. Speaking with Kaito, he learns Higashi got the money back, and that to learn more they'd have to talk to Ayabe. Yagami goes to Tender, and while waiting to meet up, Masuda tells him of a new job. He tells Yagami the meeting will be at Hill Garden on Park Boulevard. There he meets a member of the Kamurocho Burglary Ring, a masked man calling himself Crow, who asks him to help find his friend Jester, who Yagami met beforehand. But after seeing what a bunch of Hypocrites the burglars have become by changing their MO from "steal from the rich and help the poor" to "steal from whoever the hell we want and use the money to buy tons of expensive jewelry" and beating up a wannabe fanboy, he fights Crow, who reveals Jester abandoned them, and Crow agrees to start the dismantling of the Burglary Ring. Afterwards, Ayabe calls to tell him to meet up tomorrow at his office, and when Yagami explains he wants to know about the Matsugane robbery, Ayabe tells him the price is 100K (Compared to the previous 200K), since it's old info by now. On his futon, Yagami gets a call from Ayabe, who snuck into his office while he was sleeping. He gives Yagami all the information he personally collected since there was no official investigation. As Yagami compliments the detail put into the files, Ayabe explains the thief snuck in behind someone entering to avoid the cameras, went in at 3 when nobody was in, how Kaito had a gun pointed at the back of his head, and how Higashi was in there polishing shoes, and if Kaito didn't act, Higashi would've either done something reckless or been spotted by the burglar, putting him at risk. Yagami admits that Kaito is too tough to let a gun to his head scare him, while also admitting it's too well planned, making it clear he had help from the inside. He also points out that when Kaito was knocked out, Higashi says he took off his medical mask, and saw his face. Given his slightly red nose, a guilt ridden Higashi was able to figure out thanks to Ayabe that the thief was a homeless man who goes by the name Red Nose. Despite all this, Kaito's still out of the family, Higashi rises in the rank following behind Hamura, and nobody has seen Red Nose since Higashi got the money back. Yagami follows Higashi's footsteps to find Red Nose, entering the homeless community. Yagami finds a lead to the Children's Park, but is assaulted by a group of homeless men. After beating them, they explain that Red Nose was murdered in the sewers a year ago, and thought he knew who did it since nobody asked about him since Higashi. Kaito doesn't believe Higashi can be a killer, and no way would he know how to get a gun due to strict Japanese gun laws. Yagami and Kaito storm Charles, where they find Higashi with a group of Matsugane Yakuza. Higashi pulls a gun on them for the accusation, but he never gets to use the gun when the previous group of homeless people storm the arcade. Yagami disarms Higashi and empties his gun on the ceiling, and after the fight, Higashi admits he didn't kill Red Nose. Yagami notes that it was his contact, with Higashi admitting the theft was more about rubbing Kaito out of the picture and less about the money, leading everyone to agree Hamura was Red Nose's contact. Yagami asks how Red Nose died, and he explains that he found Red Nose in the sewers with Hamura and Ozaki. Hamura was giving Red Nose 10 million for the job, but Higashi accidentally blows his cover, forcing Hamura to shoot Red Nose. At gunpoint, Higashi explains everything that happened, and Hamura threatens him to shoot the dying Red Nose. When he hesitates, he grabs his hand and forces him to pull the trigger until he empties the gun. Ozaki kicks Red Nose's body into the sewer, and Hamura tells Higashi he's a real Yakuza. Higashi is now being blackmailed with his prints on the gun and no alibi. Despite knowing this, there's nothing Matsugane can do. Yagami leaves, wanting Kaito and Higashi to bond again. Higashi admits something about Yagami rubs him wrong. Kaito tells him about Yagami's dad, who was a respected defense attorney. When Yagami was 15, his father took a dead to rights murderer and got an acquittal, but one of the victim's family members murdered his father and mother and then committed suicide while he was at a friend's house, avoiding them because he was mad that they were busy with work. Since then, Yagami has blamed himself for not being there, and ran away to Kamurocho, becoming a bartender at Tender. As a young Yakuza, Kaito had to end fights Yagami started with him until Matsugane took interest in him, getting him into law school and everything. Kaito leaves, his friendship with Higashi restored.

Chapter 4 - Skeletons In The Closet
At night, Higashi and the Charles clerk are beaten by Hamura and his men for not stopping Yagami, while Kengo and a fellow Matsugane man, Kurimoto, leave to have a smoke to get away from the tense situation. However, from behind they are shot at, Kengo survives, but Kurimoto is shot to death while a woman got grazed by a bullet. The next morning, Yagami and Kaito hear the news and figure that the shooter was a Kyorei man who wanted to start a war by shooting at the Matsugane Family offices, where they talk of how Kurimoto was shot three times in the back, and once in each eye. Yagami goes to Charles to find out more information from Higashi. Higashi assures him that Hamura won't be a major threat for now as he has gone into hiding, since he and Higashi believe that the hit was on Hamura because Kurimoto and Hamura look the same from behind and were dressed similarly that night. He also tells him that the Kyorei second in command and future chairman, Satoshi Shioya, has arrived in Kamurocho. Higashi warns that Shintani might be a future target since he got Hamura freed. Yagami goes to warn him, but Shintani would rather tell him to stop investigating the Mole. Yagami refuses since the murderer has not been caught yet, which infuriates Shintani. As Yagami leaves, Shintani leaves a cryptic warning, leading Yagami to realize that he knows something since he talks to Hamura. He refuses to say anything else due to client confidentiality. While Yagami leaves, he gets a call from Kaito saying Ayabe can meet up at Tender for information on the shooting. Ayabe admits that he doesn't have much information on the shooting, but he does allow Yagami to ask any question for free, where they learn that the only reason a very small Kansai Yakuza clan are in Kamurocho is because of money backed by the Kajihira Group, a major construction firm looking to expand in Kamurocho, even going so far as to have connections with Minister of Health, Kazami. As Yagami leaves, he is stopped from leaving by Ayabe's superiors: Detective Mitsuru Kuroiwa and his partner Sakuraba. He reminds Yagami that thanks to him, Kuroiwa has become the laughingstock of the police thanks to Hamura's acquittal. Yagami leaves to let him obviously spy on Ayabe, but not before Kuroiwa reminds him of the Okubo case, musing over the new killer and the next victim. Yagami decides to go to KJ Art, to find out more about Kajihira. But they are led into a trap by Murase, getting guns to the back of their heads by Shioya. Before Shioya's boys can do any serious harm, they are saved by Jester. The trio fight the Kyorei clan and win. The thief removes his mask, and after getting to Charles, he introduces himself as Fumiya Sugiura, who quit the burglarly ring he started after being fired by the Kajihira Group for discovering a slush fund to the Kyorei and KJ Art as a systems engineer with false accusation of embezzlement. After Higashi kicks them out, Yagami returns to his office, where he gets a call from Saori about how she's been unable to get ahold of Shintani. Yagami calls Shintani himself, but he hears a phone vibrating in his closet. When he opens it, Shintani's corpse with his eyes missing falls before his feet.

Chapter 5 - Days Gone By
After calming down from the shock, Yagami calls Saori and tells her what happened and asks her to call the police for him while he investigates. After noticing he was shot in the chest and that he didn't die in the office due to a lack of blood, he finds Shintani's phone, which leads Yagami to a phone number he called before his death. Before he can investigate further, the police arrive being lead by Kuroiwa. After making some unfounded accusations to Yagami, Kuroiwa asks him to leave the crime scene and find somewhere else to sleep until the investigation ends. After Yagami notes he doesn't even have enough money to pay his rent, Kuroiwa makes a snide comment about how despite that, he could still afford to bribe a cop. After finishing up with the cops, Yagami checks on Saori, who tells him Genda wants to speak to him about Shintani. He tells the entire office what happened, and Hoshino notes that Shintani knew more than he let on from his argument with Yagami. A grieving Genda warns Yagami to leave town for his own safety, and Yagami promises he will. After Genda walks Saori to the station, Yagami stays the night at the Genda Law Office, but Hoshino asks if he can help find the Mole to avenge Shintani, which Yagami accepts. The duo look into the phone call Shintani made, where Hoshino searches up the number, leading to the Advanced Drug Development Center, or ADDC. This unnerves Yagami, because 3 years ago, a laundryman named Shinpei Okubo was accused of murdering a patient. Yagami decides to call it a night, and tells Hoshino to meet at the Charles Arcade. The next day, Yagami meets at Charles with Hoshino, Kaito, and Sugiura, and brings everyone up to speed. Sugiura and Hoshino note that the ADDC was in the news last year after Director Ryusuke Kido announced a new dementia drug called AD-9, which is still in animal testing after Kido published a paper on AD-9. Yagami recognizes Kido from when he gave Yagami the tour of the ADDC three years ago. Hoshino notes what an important project it is, with a new building being added to the ADDC just for the development of AD-9. Sugiura suggest they call the center to try and find out, but that information cannot be reached, so Yagami and Hoshino decide to visit the center themselves. Before they leave, Sugiura decides to ask what happened to Okubo, and what he thought of the case. Yagami admits that he probably thought he was innocent, but he couldn't believe him after he was asked to defend him a second time for Emi's murder. Sugiura continues to ask questions, but Kaito tells him to quit. Later, as Yagami and Hoshino make their way to the ADDC, Yagami explains how the ADDC is just a part within the Medical Institute and how they own every inch of the campus the ADDC sits on. When they enter, Yagami is unnerved by how little has changed, almost like time stopped. As he takes in the lobby, he has a flashback of him and Shintani entering the first time they came to the ADDC. He and Hoshino head over to the front desk and ask for Kido. However, Hoshino points behind him and Yagami sees Kido walking up to him with two men at each side.

Three Years Ago...

Director Kido meets with Yagami and Shintani as they come to investigate for Okubo's trial. Shintani is apathetic to the case, while Yagami wishes to see the scene of the crime, determined to prove his client's innocence. Kido asks for information on Okubo, and Shintani notes that the body was found where he said it was. Kido explains he wants the case over with since the Minister of Health is getting bad publicity, but nevertheless gives them a guide, a nurse named Terasawa. She takes them to the room of Koichi Waku, the victim. Shintani makes a fool of himself along the way, forgetting the victim's name and hitting on Terasawa. At Waku's room, Terasawa explains that he was one of the many patients at the ADDC who suffered from dementia, caused by Alzheimer's disease. Investigating the room, Yagami notes that there's no way to open the windows and that from outside, the head of the bed can't be seen, meaning that it would be easy to make it look like someone or something else would be in the bed during the time he was last seen. Shintani explains the case to Yagami, how laundryman Shinpei Okubo was questioned over the missing Koichi Waku, who admitted he buried his body in the mountains, but denies murdering Waku, and notes how six years ago, a drunk Okubo broke his then girlfriend's finger, as well as Okubo discovering the body at 10 AM. In the garage, Terasawa explains how Waku was last seen at 8 AM, with Shintani saying that the witness is a scientist who will testify. A frustrated Yagami notes that none of the staff wants to talk until the trial, since it will interfere with the scientist's jobs. As Yagami and Shintani are about to leave, Yagami gives Terasawa his card and to contact him if she has anything that can help. The lawyers go to the correctional facility Okubo is imprisoned in until his trial. Shintani is abrasive, telling Okubo how hopeless it it, while Yagami assures that he has nothing to lose if he helps Okubo, who maintains he didn't see Waku at all the day of the crime until he find him in the back of his truck. Okubo was scared of being suspected for his past criminal record, and Shintani points out how Okubo was assaulted by Waku three days before the crime after accusing him of stealing his wallet. Shintani explains it's a delusion of dementia, where someone thinks something is stolen and blames the closest person. As Okubo leaves, he tells Yagami not to bring Shintani next time, while Yagami tells him that he might be able to have a shot with Terasawa. Yagami returns to Genda's office, where Saori and Genda teases him about Mafuyu. Yagami points out how the window that looks into the room can not be used to identify Waku. Yagami hopes this'll greatly extend the possible window for the time of death. Shintani yells outside the office, having been tased by someone eavesdropping on Yagami. Yagami gives chase, but realizes it's Terasawa, who cries out and gets several men to defend her. After fighting off the thugs, Yagami and Terasawa go to Tender where he questions her. Terasawa explains she wanted to say something, but Shintani surprised her and she pulled out the stun gun in surprise. Terasawa tells him that the last witness for Waku in his bed was Yoji Shono, one of the top scientists of the ADDC and Kido's right hand man. Terasawa explains how he seemed strange with how he didn't seem truthful, if unintentionally. Terasawa adds that it'd be inappropriate to talk poorly of a superior, but Terasawa wants to help given she thinks Okubo is innocent. At the courthouse, Shono is on the stand, who explains how he was making his rounds around the center at 7:50, he notes how he looked into the room from the door and saw Waku under the sheets. Terasawa is next on the stand, and Okubo is confused by this. Yagami asks for her opinion of Shono's testimony, who notes his words were imprecise and his actions were negligible. Yagami asks for details and she answers that he can't tell from looking in out in the hallway. Yagami explains how Shono was lying given that there's no way to identify who or what was in the bed. Terasawa defends this by pointing out a past event where Waku was in the breakroom instead of in bed (It was actually his sheets at the time). Yagami calls Shono back to the stand, and asks him what he saw in Waku's room, wanting to be sure he saw Waku's face in his room, to which he responds he isn't sure. Yagami and Izumida quickly get into a tirade about Shono and Okubo's credibility thanks to their past, with Izumida trusting Shono given his past of losing his mother and grandparents to Alzheimer's and reminding the court of Okubo's prior of breaking a girlfriend's finger. The argument is interrupted when Terasawa stands up in the audience, and speaks positively of Okubo, swearing he never drunk alcohol after the incident and that Okubo knows Waku was sick with dementia when he was accusing him of theft. The judge tries to have her removed from the court, but not before she reveals that she's dating Okubo and that his imprisonment will hurt her too. Okubo never told anyone because she shouldn't be hurt by his actions. Her outburst affected the jury, and Okubo was found innocent. But a month later, Emi Terasawa was murdered in her apartment by Okubo.

The Present

Yagami is approached by Kido with Shono and a man in a business suit at his side. The man, a Vice Minister, excuses himself while Kido and Shono speak with Yagami, not hiding their contempt for him for what happened to Emi. Yagami tells them of how Shintani was murdered and the last call was to the ADDC. In Kido's office, he finds out Shintani made a call to Shono, but Shono didn't answer because he was busy at the time, and Shintani didn't leave a voicemail. Yagami is confused, but Kido claims that people high up in the facility get prank calls from people claiming to be friends and family, but Yagami is suspicious of this line of thinking. Yagami brings up the Mole murders and how Shintani was murdered the same way, and becomes curious if the ADDC might have anything to do with it, but this insults Kido. Suddenly, Kuroiwa enters with several police officers, who have come to have Yagami be brought in as a material witness.

    Chapter 6 - Collusion
Before Kuroiwa can bring Yagami in, Hoshino asks if the interview is voluntary. Kuroiwa answers that it is, so Yagami brushes him off, but not before Kuroiwa threatens him with a warrant and insulting Yagami not being a lawyer anymore. An irate Kido kicks everyone out of his office. Yagami tries to ask if he can talk to Shono, but Kido tells them no. When they leave, Yagami is disturbed that the police knew he was at the ADDC. Yagami and Hoshino tries to speak with the receptionist on speaking with Shono. However, he's in the research wing where Kido's approval is needed to enter. However, they get a break when one of Shono's assistants, a woman named Hashimoto offers to help them get into the research wing. Along the way, she explains how she's a part of the team led by Shono leads working on AD-9 (Advanced Drug #9), and how it can be the first successful cure of Alzheimer's Disease, with Hashimoto stating that statistics of the disease and how Director Kido will go down in history if it succeeds. In the lab, Yagami and Hoshino go to speak with Shono, who is surprised by them entering the lab. Shono is approached by the man from the lobby, Vice-Minister of Health Kaoru Ichinose, who notes Shono has never raised his voice. Ichinose orders them to leave, but Yagami tries to ask a question of at least why Shintani called, but Shono claims he never heard that name before. Kido enters before Yagami can ask too many questions, Yagami and Hoshino leave before Kido can call security. Ichinose threatens to have Minister Kazami contact the Bar Associate to file a complaint. As they leave, Yagami realizes that he's heard Kazami's name before. He remembers how Ayabe brought up how the Kyorei came to Kamurocho, working for Kajihira, and how Kazami was involved with the redevelopment, and that as a minister of Health land redevelopment would have nothing to do with it. Hoshino suggests going to speak with Sugiura since he worked for Kajihira. Yagami calls Sugiura who promises to try and find something out. When they get back to Kamurocho, Hoshino reveals he got an e-mail from Saori saying how Hattori tried to enter the office to interview Yagami for Shintani's murder. Hoshino splits to deal with Hattori. Eventually, Yagami gets a call from Sugiura, who tells him to meet at Koi Bride. There, Sugiura reveals that the meeting between Kajihira and Kazami about tearing down the Medical Institute (And by extension, the ADDC), and redevelop the land. Minister Kazami was already planning on shutting down the Institute due to the appearance of a tax scam when Kajihira came to him with the project. Kajihira went the extra mile, buying up the land around the Medical Institute in advance, and practically bribing Kazami. Then everything changed when AD-9 was announced and Kazami abandoned the redevelopment plans. After hearing all this, Yagami asks how he knows all this, and Sugiura shows to him an article from last year written by Hattori. Sugiura comments on how the story wasn't credible, but Yagami believes it since Hattori wrote it, calling him an asshole in the process. Yagami gets to Genda's office, but finds Hoshino and Saori have scared him off. Hoshino shows that Mafuyu is at the office as well. She came to offer condolence for Shintani's death and that Izumida and Morita wants to have Yagami taken in for Shintani's murder, and she's being purposefully kept in the dark, causing her to ask if Yagami did kill Shintani. She explains that as a prosecutor, her job is to doubt people. When Yagami assures her he didn't, she takes her leave. Yagami tells Hoshino what Sugiura found, and Sugiura can't help but see the irony in the situation with Hattori. Yagami gets a call from Sugiura, who was stopping by but saw Mafuyu being tailed by some yakuza. Yagami and Sugiura head to Theater Square, where many yakuza are following Mafuyu to Theater Avenue. On the way, Yagami is attacked by some of the yakuza, luckily getting help from Kaito to help him get to Mafuyu. A van stops in front of Mafuyu, and several yakuza try to kidnap her, one even slapping her. Luckily Yagami saves her in time, fighting off the yakuza. Yagami hides Mafuyu in a nearby store, where Yagami gets a call from Sugiura, letting him know he's tailing the van, finding them to be Kyorei. Mafuyu calls Izumida, who sends some cops to protect her. Mafuyu begs Yagami to leave with her out of Kamurocho, but Yagami tells her how the murders are connected to the ADDC. Yagami, Sugiura, and Kaito storm their base at a cabaret called Honmaruen, where they fight through dozens of yakuza. Eventually the trio confront Shioya, where Yagami demands to know why Mafuyu was targeted. Shioya tells them he has a job for them, and Mafuyu was insurance to make sure they didn't refuse. Kaito tells he they would've done it free of charge, no question asked, but tells them that for hitting Mafuyu, they'll refuse. Shioya and his bodyguards fight Yagami and his team, but are eventually beaten. After the fight, Hattori enters with an elderly man in a wheelchair, who Sugiura identifies as Shigeru Kajihira himself.

    Chapter 7 - Limelight
Kajihira begins by telling Yagami how Hattori told him so much about the ex-lawyer, including how to get in his head, leading the trio to realize he's the one who ordered Mafuyu's kidnapping. Kajihira explains it was a test, and now that they passed, the Kyorei will not bother them anymore. Kajihira wants Yagami to look into a job, explaining how a year ago he tried to redevelop the land of the Medical Institute, which is big enough for Kamurocho to fill three to four times. Kajihira also tells them that due to his old age, he doesn't have the luxury of patience, so he bribed a man named Toru Hashiki, the Vice Director of the ADDC, to fire professional doctors and selling their cutting edge research to rival labs, but the moment everything was in Kajihira's grasp, AD-9 was announced and everything he did was All for Nothing (losing a hundred billion yen in the process), and Hashiki ended up dead in a drunken brawl six months ago. Kajihira wants Yagami to investigate Hashiki's death, believing it was premeditated since Hashiki was investigating AD-9, the miracle drug that came out of nowhere to save the ADDC, finding it Too Good to Be True. Kajihira even brings up Shintani (and indirectly) Okubo, thinking it's all too much a coincidence, believing Yagami wants to know the truth as bad as he does. Kajihira is wheeled away, and Yagami tells Hattori that Mafuyu was nearly kidnapped thanks to him, but Hattori gives a weak explanation that he had to protect his own skin and isn't even apologetic. Outside the cabaret, Yagami calls Hoshino to look into Hashiki's death. The next day, Yagami and Kaito meet with Hoshino and Saori at Genda's office, with both noting how he hasn't been in the office in a while, but Hoshino reads off an article how Hashiki was found in an alleyway horribly beaten, in a coma and died in the hospital three weeks later. He was last seen in an argument with a man in a black raincoat, who the police never found. Saori points out that there's no proof behind Kajihira's claims of Hashiki's murder being premeditated. Hoshino agrees, finding the murder attempt sloppy. Kaito disagrees, thinking that making a murder attempt look like a brawl that lead to an accidental death is something a professional does, pointing out that if Hashiki was dead in the alleyway there'd be an investigation, but since he died in a hospital weeks later, it was written off as a drunken brawl. Saori is skeptical, but Kaito assures that such a professional killer does exist. Yagami is skeptical too, but feels this can't be proven without an investigation report, meaning they'll have to talk to Ayabe. Kaito planned ahead by calling him, but Ayabe said he is being pressured by Kuroiwa, so he's sending someone else to meet with them at L'Amant. At the casino, Yagami and Kaito start looking around, until Yagami finds a blonde woman with sunglasses at the bar, who tells him to take the seat next to her. Yagami is confused, especially when she talks like she knows him and makes an Accidental Innuendo, causing Yagami to explain he likes to take it slow. The girl screams his name to get him to stop talking, making Yagami realize it's Mafuyu in a wig, who snarks that no woman comes on that hard for sex. Mafuyu hands to him the file for Ayabe, and Yagami's shocked she stole it from the Prosecutor's office. As Mafuyu leaves, she tells him Izumida is planning to arrest him under suspicion of Shintani's murder. Kaito arrives, checking out the disguised Mafuyu, forcing Yagami to tell him who she was, flustering Kaito. Kaito points to a map of the crime scene that Hashiki was at the Queen Rouge, a high class cabaret, an hour ago before his murder. Kaito reads that he wasn't alone, and is surprised it was Shono he went drinking with, whose alibi is that he was in a cab to the center to speak with Kido during the murder. Hashiki was beaten fourteen to fifteen times by a man in a black raincoat who was wearing gloves, and died three weeks later in the hospital. The duo make there way to where Hashiki was found, and Kaito points out Shono was on a different street, and the silence in the alleyway made it a good place to fight. They head to the Queen Rouge, but the smug doorman will not let them enter unless they have a membership. Yagami tries to speak with any girl that was tending to Hashiki, but the doorman continues to refuse them the chance. Kaito notices a hiring sign, and the doorman admits that they do need a new hostess, so Kaito recommends Mafuyu and Saori. Yagami is very uncomfortable with this because they don't even know about this, but the doorman finds the Unkempt Beauty Saori to be an ideal girl. Both are confused by the man's tastes, but try to figure out a way to get Saori on board. The doorman adds that he's a manager and if she does come he might even hire her on the spot. Yagami states that there's no way Saori will agree to this, so Kaito suggests getting her top quality desserts to satisfy her sweet tooth. Yagami calls on Tsukumo to help him find a place selling rare desserts, and they come across a mochi shop that just opened up. Yagami heads over, finding the store owner being harassed for protection money, Yagami steps in and fights off the thugs. After the fight, the clerk gives to Yagami for free some of the mochi that's used for advertising after telling him he ran out of mochi for the day. Yagami heads to Genda's office to drop off the mochi for Saori, but is surprised Genda has finally returned to the office. After Yagami hands to Saori the mochi, Genda speaks with him, revealing Hoshino told him everything about Shintani. Genda is furious that he disobeyed him and dug himself deeper. Genda asks if he remembers that Shintani was like a son to him, which has sent Genda into a heavy depression, unable to get out of bed or enjoy food. Now scared of also losing Yagami and Hoshino as well as they investigate further into the mole. However, Genda reveals that he's actually sick of thinking this way. One of his own gets killed and all he can think of is wallow in self pity, making Genda reveal that he is giving all his support to Yagami to bring Shintani's killer to justice on the condition nobody else dies. While they're talking, Saori has already eaten most of the mochi, so Yagami takes this time to tell her the plan. She immediately rejects it. Yagami and Genda try to talk her into it but fail, yet when Hoshino tells her she could be the best, she agrees to it. At a dress store, Yagami gets bored while Saori tries on dresses. Yagami jokes that they're on a date, but Saori tells him Mafuyu won't be happy, since they were friends as teenagers who managed to reconnect in law school, with Mafuyu becoming a prosecutor and Saori a defense attorney. Saori decides to tell a story of Mafuyu's past: When she was younger, she lost her mother in a hit and run. Yagami admits he heard this story, adding she was comatose while the culprit was caught. Chief Prosecutor Morita became her hero and first crush when his patience with her allowed them to convict the culprit. Saori tells him she invited him to meet Mafuyu because Morita had just gotten married to another woman. They go to meet with Hoshino at a salon for makeup. Afterwards, Yagami takes Saori to Queen Rouge, where the manager becomes awestruck by her and hires her right away. After the manager runs her down on what the job entails, she and some other girls spend the night entertaining some men. During this time, Saori bonds with a struggling hostess named Mika. As Mika compliments Saori, she comments on how her first night six months ago a customer that yelled at her had been beaten to death in a drunken brawl. Saori realizes she's talking about Hashiki, and Mika can't help but blame herself for having agitated him that night. Before Saori can ask more, another table is requested for them. At the end of the night, Mika asks if they could hang out when the shift ends, so Saori suggests Bar Tender. Saori calls Yagami to meet up with them.

Earlier...

Yagami leaves Saori at the Queen Rouge and makes his way to his office. Outside Yagami's office, he's approached by Kuroiwa, Ayabe, and Kuroiwa's partner Sakuraba. Kuroiwa has Yagami bring them into his office. Inside, Kuroiwa tells him how there's a leak in the prosecutor's office, adding in it might be a woman who got information on Hashiki's murder. When Yagami denies it, Kuroiwa kicks at his table, insinuating that she's lowlife scum to sell police information, forcing Ayabe to agree. Yagami asks if he's finished, but Kuroiwa tells him that Izumida wants to speak with him tomorrow about Shintani. As soon as they leave, Ayabe complains about how Kuroiwa's been dragging him around. Yagami spends the rest of the night smoking until Saori calls him. At Tender, he meets with Saori and Mika, who confirms a picture of Hashiki and Shono are who she served. She notes how Hashiki was venting about his boss while Shono was just awkwardly staring at her breasts. She notes he kept talking bad about Kido, and Mika notes that she heard some underhanded deals were being made with AD-9. She continues that the night was fairly normal until Hashiki started asking questions about AD-9's credibility, asking if anything was falsified results and fabricated data. Shono denied the claims, resulting in an argument. Yagami's not surprised by his desperation, so the questioning ends. Yagami takes Saori back to Genda's office, where Hoshino is smitten with her new look, with Genda and Kaito complimenting her. Saori leaves to change into her usual attire, after which Yagami comes to the same conclusion as Kajihira about Hashiki's murder being premeditated. Kaito is unsure if anything is actually wrong with AD-9, with Hoshino adding that the Techno Babble around the original paper is like another language to him, but does point out nobody has even come forward about any foul play online or in the real world. Genda's baffled by anyone wanting to kill anyone over a paper, with Hoshino countering that AD-9 is the only thing keeping the ADDC open, bringing in billions of government yen as funding. Yagami believes the man in the black raincoat who killed Hashiki was an assassin hired, possibly by Kido given he was the one who published the paper and likely has yakuza connections. Hoshino laments that they can't talk to him after what happened at the ADDC. Yagami brings up Kuroiwa and Izumida and believes the Prosecutor's office can help them. Yagami heads out, leaving Hoshino wondering what his plan is. Yagami is woken up by a call from Ayabe, who snuck into his office. Ayabe tells him a message from Kuroiwa, a reminder to meet with Izumida at the Prosecutor's office. Yagami is confused, so Ayabe explains he has a bad feeling, with Yagami assuring he won't say anything Ayabe's side-job. Yagami tries to find out why he's suspected for Shintani's murder, but Ayabe admits he's having that information kept from him. Yagami gets to the office, where Mafuyu is waiting for him. She explains Izumida is having her meet with him first to get him to relax, but Mafuyu admits he's gonna be thrown to the wolves. Yagami is put into a meeting room with Izumida, Morita, and several prosecutors. Izumida asks where Yagami was the night Shintani was murdered, to which Yagami tells him he was at KJ Art with Shioya. Morita asks about Yagami looking into Shintani's call history, and had called the ADDC before he died. Morita also brings up how Yagami questioned Kido and Shono. Yagami explains he was looking to find his killer, not wanting to leave it to the police. Morita requests proof, so Yagami tells them everything about Kajihira, Hashiki, AD-9, and the Kyorei. Near the end, Morita gets a phone call, and explains that Ayabe is being arrested for Shintani's murder. Izumida explains that the bullet came from Ayabe's gun.

    Chapter 8 - A Broken Bond
Morita immediately apologizes to Yagami for keeping him in the dark, explaining that Ayabe had to be oblivious with the belief Yagami was the prime suspect. Yagami deflates when Morita adds that Ayabe's corruption is already known by them but chose not to act on it until now, and that it'll be looked into as they try to connect it to Shintani's murder. The prosecutors make their leave, but not before Yagami gets a call from Ayabe, who is adamant he's being framed and asks for his help. Yagami decides to defend Ayabe, officially reigniting his career as a lawyer. Before hanging up, Yagami whispers that he has more that needs to be said. As he leaves, Yagami calls Genda and tells him they are taking the case, who sends Hoshino over to speak with Ayabe. At the detention center, Yagami and Ayabe trade quips with each other before Ayabe explains that the rifling marks on the bullet match his gun, and since rifling marks are no different than fingerprints, it means that Ayabe's gun was stolen. Ayabe then goes on to explain that the night Shintani was murdered, that after leaving Tender he was knocked out and woke up in a Children's park, with his gun and a full clip of bullets with him, and chose to keep quiet to keep his dirty work a secret, he even admits he thinks Kuroiwa was dragging him around so he wouldn't skip town. Yagami and Hoshino finish speaking with him and Yagami admits there is no way Ayabe is dumb enough to use his own gun to kill someone. Yagami suspects the Mole, but he knows if he's gonna find out anything he'll need Hamura. Yagami meets with Higashi on finding Hamura, but is told by Kaito that he and Matsugane are hiding from the Kyorei. Higashi promises to try and get them, but asks for some time. While leaving, Kaito explains Hoshino told him what happened, and came to meet up with Yagami. Later, they get a call from Higashi, who tells them Matsugane has agreed to meet with them at a restaurant called Kamuro Kikunoya outside of Kamurocho. At the restaurant, Yagami and Kaito share a drink with Matsugane with Higashi a middle man. Matsugane asks a favor of them to stop looking for Hamura, reminding him that he's the only one bringing money into the family. Matsugane admits that not even he knows where he is. Yagami is confused given how out of the way they went to meet, so Matsugane reveals that most of the Matsugane Family is in the restaurant, confusing even Higashi. Matsugane admtis that he wants them to stay away from Hamura if for nothing else than to not be hurt by him, but admits that if it takes hurting them himself to keep them away, then he's willing to accept that since it'll mean that they will be alive, pointing out Hamura has a lot of money that can let him do anything. For the first time since he's known them, Matsugane begs them to listen to him and stop looking for Hamura and the Mole. Yagami refuses by pointing out how everything is connected, all the way to Okubo and the ADDC, and that he needs to find the truth. Kaito makes it clear that he's on Yagami's side, and that he doesn't care if he's never Yakuza again. Matsugane leaves before his family can fight the duo, forcing Higashi to choose the family over the duo. After fighting a reluctant Higashi and most of the family, Matsugane returns to Yagami and Kaito to speak some more. Matsugane laments on how old he's gotten given how simple it was for Yagami and Kaito to win.

Twenty Years Ago...

Teenager Takayuki Yagami is getting a beating from Masaharu Kaito, a young Tojo Clan Yakuza recruit in the back streets of Kamurocho. Afterwards, Kaito's boss, Mitsugu Matsugane, drops by to see what kind of person Yagami is. Yagami insults Matsugane, who can't help but chuckle, before shutting him up.

Matsugane admits that he sees a lot of himself back when he was younger in Yagami, and tells him that unlike him and Kaito, he has a shot to do something good with his life, so he offers to teach him what he knows to survive in Kamurocho.

Present Time

Matsugane tells them that the Mole is a hired assassin that Hamura has worked with in the past. Matsugane warns that even if Hamura and the Mole is found, it won't be over since they're just puppets on a stage to the real threat. Before leaving, Yagami points out that the Matsugane Family he knows wouldn't sit by and let a serial killer be on the loose, but Matsugane counters that Hamura is the Matsugane Family now. After leaving, Kaito actually got a clue: Since Hamura is leading the Matsugane Family, he has to have a way to contact the family. Yagami realizes he's talking about bugging the office. Kaito suggests recruiting Sugiura to help them sneak in undetected. Yagami meets with Tsukumo, who he pays to get some high quality bugs. Yagami returns to his office to meet with Kaito and Sugiura, who points out that the only way to enter and exit is with a disguise. Kaito already planned for that, pulling up a picture of a dressed in a gaudy gold suit with sunglasses named Tashiro. If they steal his clothes and have Yagami wear a facemask, he can sneak in easily. As they finish talking, Kaito can't help but admit how depressed he is for throwing away his last chance to rejoin the family, yet he resolves that he needs to see this through. The trio find Tashiro roughing up a customer at a Matsugane Cabaret for getting frisky, but Kaito claims he's using it as a fake excuse just to steal his money. Yagami and Kaito fight Tashiro, knocking him out and taking his clothes. Kaito goes to get Tashiro off the streets while Yagami goes to meet with Sugiura. Yagami sneaks in and successfully sets up bugs in the office, even after his cover is blown trying to set the bugs in Matsugane's personal room after being saved by Sugiura cutting the power when he hears everything thanks to the bugs. When they flee, Sugiura hears a call being made to Hamura about the incident, with Cho-Han being mentioned. Cho-Han is a dice game, meaning he's at a gambling hall. Yagami heads to L'Amant to find someone who might know of a secret gambling hall. After wandering around the casino (and doing some strange requests), he finds someone who knows the perfect place: It's a shop without a sign in the Champion District, and he even finds out the secret password. Yagami meets up with Kaito and they head to the Champion District. They easily get into the gambling hall. The gambling hall is modestly small yet extravagant, and Hamura and Ozaki are the loudest ones in the whole joint. Yagami and Kaito storm Hamura's game, and get into a fight with Hamura and the other players. Yagami and Kaito beat Hamura into a corner, after which Yagami grabs a chair to sit in while he interrogates Hamura. Kaito starts to strangle Hamura, pissed that everything bad that's happened is because of him, but relents when he realizes that by no longer being Yakuza, he can punch him instead. Yagami questions Hamura on the Mole, and how Shintani was so sure the Mole wasn't a part of the Yakuza war, and the Mole silenced him with Ayabe's gun. Hamura denies it, but Yagami points out Shintani knew the Mole was connected to the ADDC and AD-9. Yagami asks if Kido is the one behind everything, but Hamura starts laughing, leading Yagami to realize Kido is actually a Red Herring. Yagami realizes that when Shintani called the ADDC, it wasn't for Kido at all, and the one Hashiki tried to speak with the day he died, meaning the one behind everything...Is Dr. Shono. Before anything else can be asked, the Matsugane start burning down the gambling hall, saving Hamura. Yagami and Kaito escape as a grenade is thrown at them.

Chapter 9 - The Miracle Drug
After successfully escaping from the fire, Yagami meets with Hoshino, who he watches a news broadcast of the event. Hoshino is downtrodden by the lack of results, and is skeptical that someone as meek as Shono could be the one ordering the murder of Yakuza, however he does have good news. He found an expert on AD-9...And it's Hattori, who agreed to speak with Yagami if he asks nicely. Yagami goes and meets with him at Kyushu #1 Star since he's writing a paper on the establishment, where they share a bowl of ramen. Hattori is smug during the beginning, but Yagami makes it clear that he'll do what it takes for the truth of AD-9, but he won't put up with all of Hattori's crap, Hattori gets straight to the point. Hattori starts by explaining how drugs are discovered and made through a combination of compounds and how they're first tested on animals and then humans, and how it could take years before a drug is considered safe for public use. Hattori adds that drugs for Alzheimer's disease have only been able to slow the process, not completely cure it, yet Kido has gone on to say that AD-9 could be the first after successful tests on mice. Hattori points out that in Japan, one in four elders have dementia, which means that everyone in the country has someone in their family in need of AD-9. Hattori explains how memory is recorded and how Alzheimer's disease and dementia can easily affect that process because of a buildup of a protein in the brain called Amyloid Beta which literally shrinks the brain by eating away at it, yet due to the mystery of the disease this is just a theory. According to the research paper, AD-9 causes Autophagy, eating away at Amyloid Beta and restoring the brain in the test mice instantly. Hattori calls it a dream drug, but Yagami finds it too good, pointing out Hashiki was killed over trying to find falsified information. Hattori is not convinced since the announcement countless animal tests were successful. When Hattori makes a comment that human experimentation should begin, Yagami has a silent epiphany. Before leaving, Yagami tries to be sure there isn't anything off about the paper, Hattori tells him the only thing off is that Shono wrote it but was published under Kido's name, which isn't uncommon. At his office, Yagami meets with Kaito, Hoshino, and Sugiura, where he explains his theory...That all of the Mole murders are actually secret human experimentation done with AD-9. Kaito's skeptical, with Hoshino agreeing given that all the subjects wound up dead. Sugiura does suggest that it might have a side effect, with Hoshino suggesting one that only affects humans, that caused death. Kaito points out that it's a dementia drug, and it doesn't make sense to not test it on someone with dementia. Hoshino looks it up on his laptop, and points out that during clinical trials, a control group is needed composed of healthy people. Kaito and Hoshino quickly get into an argument over Kaito's skepticism on the notion, thinking that they need someone with dementia, eventually spitting out Waku's name. Yagami has an epiphany, and Kaito notices which ends the argument. Sugiura catches on to Yagami's thinking, leading them to realize Waku may very well have been the first victim. Kaito is unconvinced since AD-9 didn't even exist yet, however Hoshino does find that the research that went into the paper would've taken years of hard work, but is confused on why Waku would even be tested on at all. Yagami figures Shono was simply impatient, wanted to get a miracle drug made as quickly as possible, and discovered the deadly side effects, making Yagami feel like it all would make sense. Sugiura is confused by how Shono would even get someone like Hamura and the Mole to work for him, he's a plain scientist after all. Yagami thinks he got Kido to help out, believing that he had access to the moneys and dirty connections to have Yakuza goons. Sugiura finds it strange that Kido would be almost jubilant when he announced AD-9, thinking he looked innocent at the time. Hoshino believes that it's possible he only found out after the conference and then Shono could easily blackmail him with the fact his name is on the AD-9 paper, and used the Mole to kill Hashiki. Sugiura suddenly looks very uncomfortable, and Yagami tells him to say what's on his mind. Sugiura explains it sounds too convenient, since if Shono killed Waku, then Okubo was innocent, yet he still stabbed his girlfriend Emi to death. He suddenly gets angry and accuses Yagami of shifting blame given that Yagami is implying the Court was right during the first Okubo trial. Kaito shuts him up, telling him he's crossing a line. Sugiura apologizes, knowing he gets emotional easily, and explains that they need to prove the theory before doing anything else...By asking Okubo himself if he really killed Waku. Yagami gets uncomfortable with this notion, knowing Okubo can't stand him after he gave up hope of winning. Sugiura insists that he talk to Okubo, so Yagami and Hoshino prepare to speak with him. Yagami heads to Genda's office, where he goes over the Waku case. As Yagami is looking over both of Okubo's cases, Genda confronts him, wanting to know why he'd want to see Okubo all of a sudden. Yagami answers he needs to know if he was innocent in Waku's murder, explaining that they didn't really prove his innocence, and he became a shut-in after people refused to believe he was innocent, losing his job, needing sleeping medicine. It was a ticking time bomb in Yagami's opinion, and he let it happen. This offends Genda, who grabs a hold of him by his jacket and tells him that what happened wasn't his fault, and his guilt shouldn't be eating away at him like it has. He asks Yagami if he remembers his father's last case, how he defended a man accused of raping and murdering a 15 year old girl, and how his father was the only man in the country who thought he was innocent. Yagami's father got the man his innocence, proving the prosecution didn't have enough evidence. Yagami admits that he did look up to his father, but looking back, he remembers how the defendant disappeared off the face of the earth, and how the victim's father took out his frustration on his father and mother, killing them. Yagami admits that Genda does have a point, but he has no right to tell him how he feels, reminding Genda Emi died because he was good at his job, and that he needs to know the truth. Yagami gets a call from Hoshino, who secured a meeting with Okubo. At the detention center, Yagami and Hoshino are uncomfortable by Okubo's rugged appearance, as well as the coarse voice he has from not speaking to anyone in a long time. Okubo is confused by Yagami's new appearance, who admits he stopped being a lawyer, making Okubo apologize for ruining him. Yagami asks him about Waku, and this makes Okubo furious, and just breaks down crying that nobody believes him. Hoshino calms him down by stating that they were investigating and found a possible suspect. Yagami shows him a picture of Shono, who Okubo is familiar with, and explains that he may have been testing an early AD-9 on him, and Okubo realizes that he put Waku's body in his truck, and becomes frustrated that if he had just called the cops, he would've never been suspected. Yagami is relieved, now believing he didn't kill Waku, but leaves without finding out if Okubo did indeed killed Emi, believing there isn't anything to do. Okubo is bitter, thinking the real killer is living well while he's going to die a killer. Yagami and Hoshino split up while Yagami heads to Tender. There Kuroiwa confronts him, making a snide remark about him defending Shintani's killer like Okubo. As soon as Kuroiwa leaves, a well dressed, handsome man with a cane that hides a katana, the Cane Man, attacks Yagami. Hoshino arrives before the fighting begins, but Yagami warns him to stay back. The Cane Man is beaten and he flees, leaving the duo confused on who he is and who he worked for. Yagami calls Kaito, warning him about the attack, thinking he was sent by Hamura. Kaito tells him he and Sugiura will be meeting at KJ Art instead, the last place Hamura's men will attack and with Kajihira protecting them. Yagami and Hoshino get there to see Murase giving Kaito a massage. Murase is extremely polite to Yagami on Kajihira's behest, confusing Yagami. Yagami tells the others about the visit with Okubo, with Kaito agreeing that Okubo didn't kill Waku. Hoshino adds that it is unlikely he killed Emi as well, though Yagami tells him to not go there. Sugiura admits that Shono is suspicious, so Kaito decides it's time to meet face to face. Yagami knows making an appointment would be useless, so he and Sugiura will confront him as he leaves. He thinks Kaito stands out and Hoshino should head back to Genda's office. The duo wait for Shono, meeting with Hashimoto again in the process, but once they spot him at the stairs by Ichinose, who makes enough noise to make Shono flee. Ichinose tells Yagami he's filed a complaint with the bar association and he orders them to leave before he has them escorted by guards. Yagami apologizes to Hashimoto for running off earlier, who tells him that if he needs to speak with Shono, he usually makes morning rounds at the hospital wing to greet some of the patients. Yagami and Hoshino prepare to sneak into the hospital through the garage and wait until morning, when the head security guard, a brute named Mashiko, escorts them out with several guards on Ichinose's orders. In the parking lot, Mashiko pulls out a stun baton, as he and the other guards prepare to beat the duo, something they figured out already and beat them up first. Yagami and Sugiura steal some of the guards clothes and sneak into the service entrance. The pair spend the night in the garage, Yagami enjoying the free smoke break, and wait for dawn. As they wait, Sugiura thinks aloud an idea he had: If Shono really did kill Waku three years ago, and if Prime Suspect Okubo killed his girlfriend after the trial, wouldn't that be convenient for him now that they stopped looking for Waku's killer? This leads Yagami to a revelation: Shono killed Emi and framed Okubo and had a perfect setup to do so given his condition back then. Sugiura had his suspicion with how Okubo's a broken man now. In the morning, Shono and a team of scientists find Yagami and Sugiura sitting in the hospital's cafeteria waiting for him. Shono flees, so the pair fight off the (frail) scientists and several guards before they trap Shono in Waku's room of all places. Yagami immediately accuses him of killing Waku with AD-9. Shono tries to deny it, so Yagami accuses him of backing the Mole and Hamura. When Shono denies this, Yagami points out he made a mistake: The Mole is a term Yagami himself made up, and as a scientist cooped up in a hospital for days, he has no way of knowing what he's talking about. Yagami explains that it's a serial killer gouging out people's eyes, starting 3 years ago with Waku's experimentation. Yagami lays out all the facts to a despondent Shono: Shono did the test not expecting death, and hid him in Okubo's truck, getting lucky he had a criminal record and tried to hide the body, but was in trouble when Okubo was found innocent. Yagami concludes that Shono used the outlying situation to frame Okubo and have another test subject, by stabbing Emi fifteen times to death after testing the drug on her, and probably injected alcohol into Okubo to make him seem more guilty, or at the least look like a drunken murder-suicide given the dangers of injecting alcohol and relying on Okubo being on sleeping medication. Yagami sees Shono's guilt in his eyes, but knows he has no proof, but leaves asking if Okubo feels he's really doing the right thing to make AD-9 to cure Alzheimer's. Kido unlocks the door and tries to threaten Yagami, who apologizes for AD-9 and asks if they need more humans to test on. This terrifies Kido, but Yagami assures Shono didn't say anything, but warns he will stop the conspiracy, even if he dies.

Three Years Ago...

Shinpei Okubo is in interrogation by two detectives who cruelly brutalize and debase him to break him as he desperate claims his innocence. This set the tone for the tragedy of Okubo's second trial and Yagami's disgraceful fall. Being blamed for a crime Okubo that was framed for and Yagami being the scapegoat for allowing a murderer to walk free.

Present Day

Okubo is visited by Yagami, who reveals he now believes in Okubo's innocence. As they both break down in tears of joy and regret, Yagami asks if he can defend Okubo, who tells him he can and for Emi's sake as well.

Chapter 10 - Chumming The Water
Sugiura, Kaito, and Yagami are in a van, listening in on the Matsugane bugs, hoping to catch Hamura and interrogate him about the Mole. To pass the time, Yagami flies the drone near the office, where he spots Higashi giving out orders. As they watch, they see him leaving the office. As Yagami and Kaito follow him, he spots them and quickly flees. Yagami and an exhausted Kaito catches him in a remote area, where Higashi explains he wanted to speak privately, where none of the Matsugane could possibly hear what they say. Higashi tells them Hamura is throwing everything he has into catching them. Yagami tries to find out where he is, but Higashi's being kept out of the loop. Higashi leaves, warning them it might be safer to leave Kamurocho. Yagami and Kaito decide that if they can't find Hamura, they'll have Hamura find them. Later that night, Yagami's in an alleyway, paranoid that someone's watching him. Kaito isn't answering Yagami's calls, just as Yagami is jumped by two Matsugane men with knives. Kaito runs in with three yakuza behind him. The duo fight them off, and chase after them to find out more on Hamura. Yagami and Kaito catch one of them in an open area, where Hamura lays a trap by pointing a gun to Kaito's back. Several family members arrive, with a beaten Higashi and Matsugane himself. Hamura promises that he'll kill them now, but Matsugane tries to talk him out of it, failing. Kaito becomes furious when Hamura points his gun at Matsugane, forcing Hamura to shoot him in anger. Sugiura rushes in and saves Yagami from being shot, and gets him away to safety. They get back to the van, where Yagami makes it clear they have to save Kaito and Sugiura tells him he found out about the trap from the bugs. Yagami asks if they mentioned anything, but all Sugiura knows is a Soleil Building, and they figure it's a lead. They drive over to the Soleil Building, an abandoned building surrounded by Matsugane Yakuza. Yagami and Sugiura storm the building, fighting the Cane Man several times with new weapons. They reach the top floor, where Kaito is tied to a chair with Hamura holding a gun to his head. While mocking Yagami, Hamura is headbutted by Kaito, leading to Yagami and Hamura to fight. After Hamura is beaten, Yagami frees Kaito. Higashi and Matsugane follow Sugiura into the room, where they get Kaito and Hamura into the van. Sugiura and Higashi take Kaito to a back alley doctor while Yagami and Matsugane take Hamura to the Kyorei's cabaret after he refuses to identify the Mole. At Honmaruen, Shioya is ecstatic to have Hamura and be working with Matsugane, finally putting an end to the Yakuza War. Shioya promises to let bygones be bygones if they keep Hamura after his interrogation is done, which Yagami gladly accepts.

    Chapter 11 - Curtain Call
Murase leaves Yagami, Shioya, and Matsugane in a backroom to interrogate Hamura in. Yagami starts by noting what he does know: Shono is the mind behind AD-9, and asks how long Hamura's been working and murdering for him, guessing that Hashiki was the Mole's first assassination to keep Hashiki from finding out about AD-9's flaw. Shioya is impressed by Yagami's skill, with Matsugane behaving like a proud father by bringing up he paid his way to law school. Yagami interrupts, next asking where the Mole is currently, with Hamura threatening he'll be here soon to free him. Yagami asks who the Mole is and how he started working with him. Yagami asks Shioya for some instruments, who pulls out a pair of sheers, making the Hamura speak instantly before they can be used. Hamura refuses to say a name, but explains that he met him as an informant who would sell all kinds of dirty secrets like his mentor before he was busted by the cops, getting his hands on guns, forged documents, and so much more. Hamura's been working with him for close to 20 years, relying on him more and more when he became Captain. Hamura admits it unnerved him how easily he could dispose of a body, with nerves of steel that began asking for assassination hits. Hamura admits that he was uncomfortable doing murder, but relented when it got clear more money would be made, money that could go to the Matsugane family. Matsugane voices his disgust, but Hamura points out the money he made was to keep the Family strong, something he always wanted, and adding that Kaito's swagger wouldn't have saved the family. Yagami shuts him up and asks him what happened after he started shopping the Moles service out. Hamura tells him they got their first hit on Hashiki, contacted by a middle man named Ishimatsu, who creeped out Hamura by the way he always smiled no matter what, took the 10 million he paid and did the hit, no questions asked. Few months later, Hamura met with Ishimatsu again who wanted them to gather test subjects for AD-9 and dispose of any dead bodies.

Several Months Ago...

Hamura is at a meeting with Ishimatsu, who wants him to abduct Kyorei men alive for a 100 million yen for each man brought to him. Hamura's confused by the increase pay for easier work, so Ishimatsu explains that it could be one man or maybe even more men since they don't know how many men they'll need. Ishimatsu asks for total secrecy and a long-term working relationship, so Hamura asks what will happen to the Kyorei men. Ishimatsu admits they might end up dead, Hamura snaps and pulls a gun on him, wanting to know why he'd pay so much to bring him a Yakuza he'd be killing anyway and getting rid of the body. He admits he's also curious about how he's getting so much money, genuinely offended that he's being seen as a tool for evidence disposal. Ishimatsu starts to explain he's only a middle man, before going on to say that his employer has billions of yen to complete his goal. Ishimatsu adds on that by pulling the trigger and killing him, Hamura will be killed, even saying that just by being there he's already agreed to the terms. Hamura places his gun on a table and Ichinose enters the room with Shono and Kido, meeting face to face as an act of trust. Shono speaks up, explaining that they are doing testing for AD-9, but Ichinose stops him from saying more. Ichinose tells Hamura that they need to ensure AD-9 can enter human trials, and are needing Hamura's help.

Present..

Yagami is surprised Ichinose and the Ministry of Health is in on The Conspiracy. Hamura asks if Yagami is familiar with the Medical Institute, explaining that it is the home of the ADDC and all the health ministry execs that work there as a retirement plan. Hamura adds that the founder is Ichinose, who used the success of the institute to rise to the position of Vice Minister. So if the ADDC were to close, he'd lose his position, not to mention all the third parties that put in favor and money into AD-9. Yagami asks why Kyorei men specifically, and Hamura explains that Shono had the standard to not go after civilians, thinking he could sleep better if yakuza died instead. Yagami thinks Shono was being self-righteous, believing these Yakuza deserved to die instead. Yagami asks if Hamura is really as innocent as he makes himself sound, like he wasn't taking part in murders themself. Yagami shows him a picture of him abducting Kume, right before he vanished, and is curious on why he would take the fall and be so sloppy as show his face on footage. Hamura explains that the Kyorei were getting paranoid after two Kyorei had their eyes gouged out, and started going out in groups, so Hamura and the Matsugane had to start a brawl to get a test subject for the Mole. Yagami wonders if he brought Kume to the ADDC for Shono, but Hamura tells him that Shono has a secret lab, a place Hamura had never gone to. Yagami asks about the eye gouging, and Hamura isn't sure on that, just assuming the Mole has some fetish. Yagami asks about Shintani, and Hamura explains that when he was on trial, he told Shintani to call Shono at the ADDC if something happens. Shintani called anyway to get some credit for catching the Mole after Yagami found the evidence to free Hamura and Shintani was being shown up. So Hamura was forced by Ichinose to help the Mole get rid of a loose end, even paying for the hit himself. Hamura even admits that it was he and the Matsugane that helped frame Ayabe. Hamura's confident that Ayabe will not be proven innocent, but Yagami counters that all they'd need to do is catch the Mole. Before any more can be asked, every can smell a fire burning. Hamura darkly chuckles that the Matsugane have come to save him, maybe even having the Mole helping them. Matsugane puts him at gunpoint and calls him a fool, pointing out he's not an ally: He's a loose end that can be replaced. Shioya leaves before them and meets them in the main hall to inform them the Matsugane have set a fire in the lobby. Murase runs in, with an explosive vest tied around him. As he's crying for help, he blows up. This infuriates Shioya, who leads what remains of the Kyorei to start fighting, and Matsugane disgusted that the lengths his men will go and save him, even resorting to putting an explosive vest. As Yagami and Matsugane try to escape, Yagami is forced to fight Ozaki and the Matsugane Clan alone as the building burns around them. They make it to the main lobby, where the Matsugane Clan are beating Shioya bloody. The fighting stops when a confused Kengo sees Matsugane holding a gun to Hamura's head. As Shioya flees, someone enters the building: The Mole in his black raincoat. Hamura was shocked to see that the Mole was here to kill him, not rescue him as he takes aim at Hamura to silence him for good, but Matsugane dives in front of Hamura, taking the bullet for him. Kengo leads the Matsugane to try and fight the Mole, but he ends up killing several members of the clan before being forced to flee by the collapsing building. Kengo and his men chase after him as Hamura and Yagami tend to a dying Matsugane, who apologizes to Hamura for making him make the tough choices he should've made. As Matsugane dies, Hamura gets up to leave, but gives Yagami a vital clue that the Mole is Kuroiwa. Yagami walks Matsugane's body out as fire fighters arrive. A depressed Yagami sits on a flight of stairs as Mafuyu tries to comfort him later. Kuroiwa shows up, who cracks a terrible joke about being at the center of the crime scene again. Yagami is confrontational with Kuroiwa, not finding it hard to believe he is the Mole. Kuroiwa tells him that they'll need to have a chat at the Kamurocho Police Station, but Mafuyu tells him Yagami needs to be at a hospital and that Kuroiwa doesn't even have a reason to interrogate Yagami, but this falls on deaf ears. Yagami decides to go anyway, where Yagami is handcuffed and has a lamp shoved in his face by Kuroiwa, inspecting him. Yagami immediately tells him that Hamura told him everything, from Hashiki, the Yakuza, to Shintani. Kuroiwa ignores this story and starts questioning why Yagami was at the Cabaret, but Yagami points out he's not denying anything.

Yagami: Matsugane-San is dead because of you. So the moment I get out, your ass is mine!
Kuroiwa: (Slams his fist on the desk) Let's see you try!

Kuroiwa proceeds to tell him that thanks to AD-9, he has complete immunity as he had cut a deal with them as the Matsugane's use to the conspiracy has came to an end and now directly answers to the Ministry of Health, and is confident he'll find Hamura soon. Kuroiwa warns that it won't end with Yagami alive, who admits he doesn't mind, so long as the world knows he's a murderer. Kuroiwa is unimpressed, calling Yagami a has-been fraud. Another detective enters the room, where Kuroiwa writes up a report that the Toho and Kyorei were fighting, causing the fire to start and Yagami was a nearby witness and allows him to leave and leaves to go take care of the Kyorei survivors. Yagami later meets up with Sugiura at his office and asks if Kaito is alright. Sugiura assures that Kaito will be back on his feet after a few days thanks to a back alley doctor Kaito knows. Sugiura leaves to let Yagami get some much needed sleep. The next day, Yagami gets a call from Mafuyu to meet at the latest Mole killing: The Matsugane Family Office. Outside the office, Yagami sees a body bag being taken away, and Mafuyu tells him that the victim was Shioya. Yagami asks about Kuroiwa, if he's handling the case, and Mafuyu points to him among the detectives. Mafuyu asks what happened at the interrogation, and Yagami tells her everything: Kuroiwa's the Mole, Shono is testing AD-9, everything. Yagami concludes that if Shono and Kuroiwa isn't stopped, the killings will never end, even if there are no more Kyorei in Kamurocho and after Yagami's confrontation with Shono. Yagami looks behind him to see several men are watching him, noting that the ministry is too big for him to fight alone. Yet despite this, Yagami refuses to walk away since Matsugane and so many other people need closure.

Chapter 12 - Behind Closed Doors
A funeral is held at the Tojo Clan Headquarters for Matsugane, where only a handful of close friends attended, excluding Hamura. With Hamura missing, the Matsugane Family has been all but dissolved. Meanwhile, Kaito and Higashi are spying on Kuroiwa, who spots them and smirks. Yagami and Hoshino are at the courthouse with Izumida and the judge at a pre-trial conference over what evidence can be displayed at the trial. Izumida is adamant on the rifling marks, but Hoshino and Yagami remain firm that Ayabe is not guilty. Afterwards, Yagami and Hoshino meet with Ayabe, and tell him Kuroiwa's the Mole. Ayabe admits that it makes sense, given how his mentor when he became a cop committed suicide after being busted for selling police info, and that the informant on his mentor was found dead, possibly a staged suicide. Yagami calls it a night and returns to his office, but is stopped at the front door by Hattori. Hattori believes that Yagami's office is being watched, but explains he's speaking with him on Kajihira's request. At the stairs to Yagami's office, Yagami tells Hattori everything, whose actually impressed with how much death is linked to AD-9, however, without evidence it's just a hypothesis. Hattori adds that Kajihira will want to meet with Yagami and Kaito face to face at Kikunoya. Yagami finds Kaito in his office, and they share a cup of coffee, where Kaito tells him Kajihira is in trouble with the Kyorei Clan's chairman Koba, angered that his captain and heir had gotten murdered over Kajihira's redevelopment plans. At Kikunoya, Kajihira holds a toast to Matsugane's memory. Kajihira lists off everything Hattori told him, but when he mentions Okubo's innocence, Hattori makes a comment about a lack of proof. Kaito's confused on why they were required to meet face to face. Kajihira admits Koba wants him to stop the killing of his men. He also wanted to say thanks for finding Hashiki's killer, believing he deserved closure. Hattori questions what comes next, but Yagami thinks all that can be done is wait until Ayabe's trial and use it to reveal The Conspiracy. Yagami does lament that without some evidence, like Hamura, it won't go far. Yagami notes they could try and catch Kuroiwa, but Kajihira warns he doesn't have time to wait that long. A list of upcoming death row inmates to be executed have been released, and Okubo's name is on that list and suspects that Kazami had pull strings to put Okubo on it and if Okubo dies Shono and the ADDC will get away with it. Kuroiwa and the Ministry of Health can afford to wait until Okubo and Ayabe are executed to kill everyone who put their noses in the case, including Yagami and Genda Law Firm who would likely be killed like Kuroiwa's previous victims. Hattori suggests someone easier than Kuroiwa, like the perverted scientist mired in scandal, Kido. Yagami points out that there's no way he can get in the ADDC, so Hattori shrugs that he needs to be lured out, by a beautiful woman. When they leave, Kaito suggests Saori for the honey trap. The next day, Yagami meets with Saori at Genda's office, who brings up the uncomfortable request. Genda's incredulous while Hoshino is angered at the implication. Saori eventually agrees to work the Honey Trap. Hoshino goes to help Saori at a salon while Yagami gets her a disguise as a journalist. After the taxi ride to the ADDC, Yagami gives Saori a purse outfitted with a camera, so they can blackmail Kido later. Saori first tries to speak with reception, but Kido quickly shows up when he sees a woman trying to meet with him. During the interview, Saori is as playful as possible, getting Kido easily excited. Afterwards, Yagami sends Kido a copy of the recording and blackmails him to come to Kamurocho, where he, Kaito, Sugiura, and Higashi will confront him at the batting center. At the center, Kido attempts to fight back with several thugs helping him, but he is defeated and brought to Charles in his underwear. Kido warns that Ichinose already knows he's been abducted, but Yagami ignores his threat by asking if he knew the truth about Waku's murder. He admits that he did, finding out after the press conference that announced AD-9, Shono telling him everything personally.

Some time ago...

Kido and Shono are sharing a toast together in Kido's office after the successful press conference. Shono voices concern for AD-9 on human trials. Kido is in too good of a mood, confident in Shono. When Shono advices against clinical trials on basis of death, Kido snaps, demanding his proof. All Shono says is Okubo was innocent, before explaining what really happened. Kido is angered that Shono did something so stupid, and is preparing to call the police on hearing him confess to Waku's murder. Shono stops him, blackmailing him with a manic look in his eyes on how his name is on the AD-9 research paper. Kido calls Shono insane.

The Present...

Kido admits that Shono also confessed to murdering Emi, infuriating Sugiura. Kido swears that he has no role in Hashiki's murder as Yagami continues questioning. When Yagami brings up Ichinose's name, Kido admits that the Vice Minister was brought in before Hashiki's murder. Kaito realizes that this means Ichinose is the one that brought Kuroiwa and Hamura into the AD-9 mess. Kido is adamant he was only bringing in funds for every aggressive demand Shono had for Ichinose, including a secret lab in Kamurocho. Kido admits that he doesn't know where it is exactly, but Kuroiwa and Ishimatsu do. Knowing all the evidence in there, Yagami has Kido contact Ishimatsu while he will tail him from Millenium Tower. When Yagami gets there, he's sent a photo of Ishimatsu from Kido's phone. Yagami and Sugiura tail Ishimatsu as he heads out. Yagami and Sugiura follow him to Monsieur Lee, an abandoned love hotel. Inside, they find several guards that they have to fight off. Before they head in, Yagami has Kaito call Mafuyu and tell her to bring the cops to Monsieur Lee. Yagami explains they cannot bring the lab into the trial legally, but Yagami has a plan. Eventually, they find Shono's lab, with Shono inside. Yagami tells Sugiura to record a video of the lab, and Yagami is ecstatic at finding so much evidence. Sugiura suddenly acts strange, standing next to Shono. Sugiura explains that he's been lying to Yagami for a long time. He never worked for Kajihira, and Sugiura isn't his real last name. He reveals his real name is Fumiya Terasawa, Emi's brother. He pulls out a knife and is about to stab him when Izumida and Mafuyu enters with the police. Izumida has him arrested for attempted murder, but Morita enters promising no charges will be pressed. Morita explains that there was no crime committed, but Yagami tells him there is one: he committed trespassing, which means the lab has to be investigated. Ichinose storms into the room, and has Morita cancel the investigation. That's when Yagami realizes that Morita is in on the AD-9 conspiracy. Meanwhile, Kuroiwa storms the Charles Arcade and beats Kaito and Higashi to free Kido. The police leave with Morita and a dejected Izumida and Mafuyu, leaving Yagami with Ichinose and Shono. Yagami leaves a smug Ichinose, promising they aren't winning yet. Ichinose leaves a message from Kido: Kuroiwa sends his regards.

Final Chapter - Down Came The Rain
Yagami returns to Charles, where he finds Kaito and Higashi nursing their wounds. Higashi asks for good news about the investigation, but gets told Morita is supporting AD-9. Fumiya Terasawa enters and asks to come clean. He reveals everything, how he wanted to punish Yagami for his sister's pointless death, how it lead to the burglary ring, how he got a new look to approach Yagami, and is laughing at the irony that Okubo was framed and Emi's real killer is being haled as a hero for fighting Alzheimer's disease. Higashi tries to console him, but he is convinced they can't win with how easily Morita buried the evidence and have all but lost as Kido is back in the safety of the ADDC. Yagami tells him that wanting to know the truth about Emi and everyone else who died is what brought them together, and that they will find the truth. As they try to think of what to do next, Yagami gets a call from Mafuyu. She wants to speak about Morita at Tender, but can't leave because she thinks she's being followed. Yagami agrees to meet with her, and Kaito insists on coming. At the bar, Mafuyu is worried about the bruises Kaito is sporting, who insists he's fine. Mafuyu explains that what Morita did was not normal of him, disturbing her how he was acting like a different person and betrayed Mafuyu's belief in him. Mafuyu adds that she wanted to look into Morita's past, to try and understand why he'd protect AD-9 so badly. She explains that ten years ago, something happened to his family, and she was going to meet with a former detective that worked the case to confirm the details. Mafuyu is supposed to get the case file at the Children's Park. Kaito and Yagami offer to be her bodyguards in case someone is actually following her, if they get to see the case file, which Mafuyu accepts. Immediately after leaving, Kaito spots several thugs that is assumed to work for the Ministry. After fighting off waves of thugs, the trio make it to the Children's Park, where they meet Uzawa, who turns out to be the detective Yagami and Kaito were trailing at the beginning of the game. Yagami and Kaito are shocked, while Uzawa is still furious at them. Mafuyu tries to calm the situation by calling Yagami her boyfriend, baffling everyone. After Uzawa laughs at Yagami's anguish, he gives them the police file. Ten years ago, Morita's older brother had strangled their mother, who was afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease and the heavy emotional and mental burden of taking care of her by himself so Morita could continue being Chief Prosecutor for seven years, the brother committing suicide in police custody a year later as he was unfit to stand trial at the time. While Mafuyu can understand him supporting AD-9, Yagami becomes frustrated that the man's using an excuse to let murders go on, all for a drug for someone he couldn't save. Uzawa leaves them, impressed by Yagami. Kaito leaves as well, and Mafuyu asks to go to Genda's to say hello to Saori. They walk in on Hoshino and Saori holding hands, clearly in a romantic relationship. Yagami and Mafuyu eventually tell them what happened, and Saori admits she heard a little about Morita's mother. Mafuyu blames herself for telling Morita about the lab, but Yagami assures her there was no way she'd know. Hoshino speaks up, and admits he doesn't think he's the best defender for Ayabe, begging Yagami to do it. Yagami agrees and walks Mafuyu to a taxi, where she gets a call from Izumida, wanting to meet at Mijore, the coffee shop. Yagami volunteers to go instead, concerned he might be working with Morita. There, Izumida is shocked Yagami is meeting with him instead of Mafuyu. Yagami immediately accuses him of working with Morita, but Izumida rebuffs this, pointing out he's disturbed by Morita's actions. That's why he called Mafuyu, to speak about what to do about Morita. Yagami shows Izumida Morita's family file as proof, who is shocked by what he's reading, but agrees with Yagami that Morita has no excuse for letting the murders go on. They try to come up with a plan, but Yagami admits there aren't many leads. Yagami suddenly gets the idea to have Izumida contact Ichinose and testify at Ayabe's trial, explain what the ADDC since it was Shintani's last call so Yagami can connect the case to Ayabe's framing. Izumida is unsure of such a foolhardy plan, but agrees to help out and the two part on better terms. The next day, Yagami holds a meeting with the team, where Hoshino announces that Genda and Ayabe approve of Yagami as the lead attorney. Yagami makes a light joke on what to call Sugiura, who doesn't mind keeping the name. Yagami then proceeds to wrap up some loose ends:

  • Yagami and Hoshino return to the ADDC to try and blackmail Kido. While Kido does meet with them, he tells them that the blackmail won't work, because if he testifies he'll be assassinated. Hoshino is shocked and almost uploads the video as a game of chicken, but Yagami stops him. Hoshino leaves with him and Yagami having a falling out. Yagami leaves but promises Kido he'll get him to testify, but Kido says he'll only testify for the winning side, and that's Ichinose right now but was open to any new evidence that can ensure Ichinose or Shono go down with him.
  • Yagami, Kaito, and Higashi have to stop the remnants of the Matsugane family starting a riot lead by Kengo. At the office, Kengo demands Yagami reveal the identity of the Mole to avenge Matsugane. Yagami refuses to help given how strong Kuroiwa is. Yagami and Higashi fight the entire Matsugane family into submission. Afterwards, Yagami tells them everything about Kuroiwa and the AD-9 conspiracy. Yagami promises to avenge Matsugane himself in court, and begs Kengo to not risk the future of the family on revenge that'll get them killed. As Yagami leaves with the Matsugane Family issues finally over, Kaito meets up with him, thankful of Yagami.
  • Yagami and Sugiura stop by the detention center to speak with Okubo. Only Yagami is allowed to meet with him since civilians aren't allowed, but Sugiura asks him to relay the message that he wants to visit Emi's grave with Okubo someday. Yagami reveals everything to Okubo, who is relieved the Emi's family doesn't hate him anymore. As Okubo processes Sugiura's request, Yagami swears he's going to save him. Okubo starts to tear up that more people believe his innocence.

After all is done, Yagami finds Sugiura at his office, who tells him that they're at the point of no return. After Yagami assures he's ready, Sugiura got a call from a depressed Hoshino asking Yagami to meet with Genda. At the office, Yagami finds Kaito there as well. Genda starts by pointing out Izumida is in the room, who announces that Ichinose agreed to testify at the trial, Izumida explaining that he would've gotten Shono if not him, something Ichinose wouldn't allow due to Shono's work and to ensure a weak willed man doesn't slip up. Izumida is curious if Hamura can testify, but Yagami points out he's still hiding, not even showing up for Matsugane's funeral. Kaito brings up Kuroiwa, but Saori reminds him of the beating he's still recovering from. Yagami suddenly gets a call from Mafuyu, who tells him Morita is having the police raid Ayabe's casino. She and Yagami realize it's a ploy to tarnish Ayabe. Izumida leaves when he finds out so that Morita doesn't find out the plan. Realizing Kuroiwa will be at L'Amant, Yagami and Kaito rush over. They arrive to find most of the staff already being escorted by police, and are allowed entrance by Morita. Morita stops them at the indoor pond with several police inspecting the area and breaks into a speech about how Ayabe was hosting an illegal gambling hall and was likely found out by Shintani and killed him for it. Morita takes them to the rundown ruins of L'Amant, and Yagami brings up what he knows about Morita. Morita explains that his mother had early onset Alzheimer's, being unable to recognize either of her sons, and his brother, who also wished to be a prosecutor, volunteered to take care of her while Morita would go on to live both their dreams. Morita knew that something bad would happen if his brother didn't get professional help for their mother, yet did nothing until it was too late. Morita explains that he was approached after Shintani's murder by Ichinose on the belief the prosecution would discover the truth of AD-9, and managed to manipulate Morita. Hearing this, Yagami tells him "Fire tempers Iron, and Tempation steels the Just." Yagami explains that Morita chose to aide AD-9 on empty promises of a cure despite the injustice and death that had transpired, and his guilt is superficial to all the suffering he let happen, including the death of the innocent Emi and framed Okubo as well as the bloodshed between the Matsugane and Kyorei. Yagami finally asks what his brother would think of him for betraying everything he stood for, making Morita snap and shouts at him to shut up. Yagami tells him to kill him if he wants him to shut up, since so many people are depending on him. Suddenly, Kuroiwa enters, making Morita demand what he's doing there, but Kuroiwa tells him to look the other way as he sees this as an opportunity to eliminate Yagami's chances of representing Ayabe. Kuroiwa insults Kaito, but Yagami stops Kaito from fighting, wanting to take a shot for Matsugane. Kuroiwa makes a comment on how he won't arrest Yagami, who shoots back he's not even a real cop, just an assassin. Yagami and Kuroiwa fight an even match, but eventually Yagami proves the better fighter. His overconfidence shattered, a bloodied Kuroiwa pulls a gun on Yagami. But Morita stops him, pointing out how foolish that is to do in the middle of a police investigation, and that he can't protect Kuroiwa from murdering a lawyer who was expected to lose without any evidence against them. After Kuroiwa is calmed, Morita tells Yagami and Kaito to leave. Outside, they find the Matsugane Family harassing the cops guarding Koi Bride, demanding Yagami and Kaito. Kaito guesses that they were worried about them, and when Higashi spots them, the commotion ends with the Matsugane leaving peacefully. When they leave, Yagami and Kaito see Hoshino was among them. Hoshino explains that when he heard they were with Morita and Kuroiwa, he called on the Matsugane for help. Hoshino also apologizes for his actions at the ADDC, admitting that that's not the kind of lawyer he wants to be, and that he feels he betrayed Yagami's trust. Kaito tries and fails to quote what Yagami said to Morita, which confuses him. In the surrounding crowd, Yagami sees Genda, Saori, Uzawa, Hattori...And a man in a black rain coat. The man runs off, and Yagami chases after him, with Kaito and Hoshino behind him. Yagami chases him to the roof of the ball park, where Yagami demands to know who he is. The man removes his hood...

One Month Later...

Yagami is in his office, in his old lawyer suit again. It's the morning of Ayabe's trial, and for the first time in years, he's wearing his Lawyer's badge once more. In the office is Higashi, Sugiura, Hoshino, and Kaito, who is currently reading an article that Hattori published about the AD-9 conspiracy, with visuals taken from Sugiura's video. Yagami heads straight to the trial, beginning with Ayabe stating his personal information, as Yagami drowns them out thinking over everything to go into the case. The case begins with Izumida calling Ichinose to the stand. Ichinose explains that the ADDC is a subdivision of the Medical Institute and are currently developing AD-9, the dementia cure. Yagami takes the stage and begins the cross examination by asking how Ichinose became the Vice Minister of Health, who brushes off the question. Yagami responds by telling the court that the Medical Institute and the ADDC was founded by Ichinose in 2002 as a way for senior execs to have new positions to retire into, allowing a stable income for their old age. The Ministry of Health then gave Ichinose the Vice Minister position for this brilliant move. Yagami however points out a blatant flaw: That nothing innovative was being done at the Medical Institute. Thus funding was starting to be cut, and how Minister Kazami was making plans to redevelop the land. Ichinose huffs that it's all hearsay, making Yagami bring up the Mole Killings involving the Yakuza, and how it's all a secret experiment with a fatal AD-9, even pointing out Hattori's article with physical evidence. Ichinose writes it off as gossip, but Yagami continues pointing out to the court that the reason AD-9 hasn't entered clinical trials is because they've been going on in secret since the drug is fatal to humans. Yagami brings up evidence: Shintani's phone call, which was spurned by Hamura to look into Shono. Ichinose snaps, finding everything nonsense, from Yagami to the court for allowing him to go on like this. Yagami interrupts him by asking him about Okubo. Ichinose writes him off as the killer Yagami let free, who corrects him that Okubo was framed both times by Shono. Ichinose demands evidence, which Yagami happily obliges thanks to last minute help...

One Month Ago...

The man removes his hood, revealing himself to be Hamura. Hamura first talks about Matsugane's funeral, believing that holding such a big funeral for so few people made it look like not a lot of people cared about him, and how he regrets he couldn't really attend as Kuroiwa was planning to kill him. Yagami wants to know why he's showing up now, so he congratulates Yagami for finding Shono's lab, something even he hasn't done. Yagami points out Ichinose has set up a cover up, so Hamura gives him something to settle accounts he owes Matsugane: Every conversation Hamura had with Ichinose recorded on his phone as insurance.

Present Time

Yagami plays one of the recordings Hamura gave him, it's of Ichinose berating Hamura for telling Shintani to call Shono, and orders him to have Kuroiwa deal with him out of his own pocket. At the end of the recording, Yagami explains to the court Kuroiwa is a Kamurocho cop as well as the Mole he mentioned. Ichinose counters that audio can be easily manipulated. At this, Yagami has Mafuyu bring in a witness: Hamura, who gives no reasonable doubt that the audio is real. Hamura then reveals Kido is now testifying as well, believing Ichinose and Shono have lost. Ichinose begs for Morita, but Mafuyu reveals that he's being arrested for corruption. Yagami points out to Ichinose he has no one to blame but himself for all the innocent people he pushed down in his rise. Ichinose gives a glare to Ishimatsu, who quickly leaves. Kaito, Higashi, and Sugiura chases after him, Yagami tries to find out what Ichinose is doing, but he doesn't get an answer. Yagami leaves, forcing a reluctant Hoshino to continue the case. With an approving smile from Saori, Hoshino is ready to finish the case. Yagami catches up to Kaito who manage to restrain Ishimatsu, who informs Yagami that Ichinose has put a hit on the Mole. Knowing how much their case hinges on Kuroiwa, Yagami and the others head out to find him before it's too late as the police takes Ishimatsu away. Back in Kamurocho, Yagami calls Mafuyu to find out if anyone knows where Kuroiwa is. She tells him that all she knows for sure is that there was a shooting in Theater Square. Sugiura stops the van a few blocks away and they start running the rest of the way, fighting through several Ministry thugs. The four arrive to a massacre, multiple thugs sprawled around dead, Yagami figuring he killed them before they could kill him. One is still breathing but heavily wounded. Yagami confronts him asks where Kuroiwa is. The man explains he's going to the ADDC and laments he's probably going to kill Shono and ruin everything. Sugiura thinks this is good, the bad guys are killing each other, but Yagami points out if Shono dies without confessing, Okubo will never be proven innocent and the case will go cold. Yagami calls Mafuyu to send the police to the ADDC while they head over. They arrive at the ADDC as it starts to rain and find the police scrambling in confusion due to contradictory orders. Inside, the four are attacked by several cops that are tricked by Kuroiwa into fighting each other. Kaito and Higashi continue fighting the cops after Yagami defeats Sakuraba, giving him and Sugiura a chance to go after Kuroiwa, who is killing scientists and cops along the way to Shono. They try to enter the Research Wing through the same walkway, but Kuroiwa shoots a gas tank that collapses it onto the street below, causing Yagami to be hit by a car. A disoriented Yagami and Sugiura enter through the garage elevator. As they get closer, Yagami starts to suffer from his injuries, especially after fighting Mashiko again. As they go deeper into the Research Wing, Yagami starts to hallucinate Okubo finding Waku's body, his visit with Shintani for Okubo's trial, and his time talking with Emi. As Sugiura walks ahead, Emi's hallucination goes up to Yagami and begs him to help Okubo and Sugiura. As she fades away, Sugiura doubles back and admits he heard Emi's voice. Confused, Yagami recovers from his injuries and they both head deeper into the facility. Eventually, they find Kuroiwa holding a gun to Shono's head, now dressed in his Mole raincoat and covered in his victim's blood. Yagami tells him revenge isn't the answer, but Kuroiwa laughs at this. Several police officers arrive but are killed by Kuroiwa, yet in the struggle Yagami and Sugiura get Shono away. But Sugiura was shot in the stomach. Yagami orders Shono to make sure Sugiura lives while he deals with Kuroiwa. Yagami confronts him, and Kuroiwa explains he stormed the ADDC to force Shono to finish AD-9 no matter what so that they can go down as heroes. Yagami calls him insane. Kuroiwa decides that Yagami will be the next subject, and when he dies, he'll gouge out his eyes. The final fight begins as the two get into a long fist fight that drags out into a lobby where Kuroiwa is thrown through one of the windows. However, Kuroiwa pulls himself out of the window and gets a second wind thanks to an adrenaline injector, resuming the fight. Against all the odds, Yagami wins his fight as Higashi and Kaito arrive with the police having sorted everything out. Sugiura gets everyone's attention that Shono is walking to them on his own. Kuroiwa tries to kill him with a knife, but Kaito stops him. When he doesn't stop, the police shoot him. Kuroiwa gloats that the experiments are over, with Shono suddenly agrees, telling him there's no more need. He pulls out a syringe, and explaining to Yagami it's a perfected AD-9. Shono starts to celebrate while Sugiura records him on his phone, exclaiming his miracle drug is a reality. Yagami simply asks him how many people has his miracle killed, to which he counters it'll save millions. Yagami points out he killed Emi and framed Okubo, people that had nothing to do with the cure. Shono admits he never wanted to kill anyone, but he felt he had to for AD-9. Meanwhile, at Ayabe's trial, Kido is on the stand and reveals an Awful Truth: The toxins in AD-9 are impossible to remove. He admits Shono had told him this yesterday, it's why he's testifying. Kido knew that Shono could never admit AD-9 had failed, that so much life had been wasted on this poison, so he felt he had no choice but to double down. Yagami calls Shono's motive bullshit, he murdered Emi so he wouldn't be in trouble, and that if he really cared someone else could've finished it so he wouldn't resort to murder. Shono snaps at this, calling AD-9 his drug, feeling he deserves to be the only one to finish it, and now that he is, he proves he was right...Right to do the horrible things he did. Shono prepares to inject himself, before explaining that growing up his mother was taking care of his dementia stricken grandparents before they all eventually died, including his mother. He injects himself, glad it won't harm anyone else. Suddenly, he starts to have a seizure, the reality of what he did overcoming him. Kuroiwa dies looking into his eyes, which have suddenly become an unnatural blue. At Ayabe's trial, Kido explains that the main symptom of the poison is that the entirety of the human eye turns blue, explaining why the eyes have to be removed. Shono dies with a painful scream, his face permanently contorted in pain.

Ten Days Later...

Yagami visits a clean shaven and more respectable Okubo at the detention center, who can't stop giving his thanks to Yagami. Yagami tells him that the retrial for Emi next week will be more of a formality thanks to Shono's confession. Yagami leaves, but shows him a guest: Sugiura. He leaves them to talk. At Genda's office, Genda notes that Shono and Kuroiwa are dead while Ichinose and Morita are now in jail, and Hoshino notes that the ADDC will be closing down, and Saori is mad that scum like Kajihira is winning in the end. Genda assures her that Kajihira is actually being investigated for his association with Kazami and unlikely to benefit from this. Afterwards, Genda notes that Hoshino and Saori shouldn't be dating at work. Saori wraps her arms around Hoshino's, making Genda laugh that nobody listens to their elders but realize it was because of their defiance against their elder in hopes of doing what's right was what lead to the satisfying conclusion. Genda looks fondly of the picture he and Matsugane took at Yagami's graduation. At Yagami's office, he's looking at the same picture, where Kaito tells him he doesn't mind if he becomes a lawyer again, and Mafuyu tells him it would be good for him to so as well. Yagami tells them both that he's not becoming a lawyer again. He explains a Lawyers job is to prove innocence, not find truth, and that not finding the truth is what lead to everything happening the last three years. He feels like if he became a lawyer again, he'd be spitting on that lesson. Also, Yagami doesn't really like wearing unflattering suits. Kaito and Mafuyu groans at this, until the office phone rings. Kaito answers, and finds it's a job to find a lost cat. He brushes it off, but Yagami wants to do it with gusto.
The end credits are of the duo relaxing while smoking before getting the cat and eventually she starts to wander in and out of the office to the duo's bemused frustration as they try to get her to stand still until they finally catch her.
