Original Air Date: November 18, 2013

When Barney’s father arrives at the hotel, Barney devises a plan that makes Robin very nervous. Meanwhile, Ted is convinced someone framed him by messing up a wedding-related duty. And also Marshall and Daphne's road trip gets a little rocky.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Amicable Exes: Upon seeing each other for the first time in years, Loretta and Jerry greeted one another politely (and no comment was made about Jerry's new wife), leading Barney to believe his parents are getting back together.
  • Aside Glance: Every time Ted mentioned a suspect, said character turned to the camera and made an eyebrow lift.
  • Bait-and-Switch: During the flashback montage of things Marshall did wrong to Daphne, one of them is Daphne getting mad at Marshall for using a word only her and her people are allowed to use. Marshall apologizes, saying he will never call her or anyone else a Trekkie again.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Once Jerry realizes that Barney sent Cheryl away on Ranjit's limo, he jumps in front of the car (after having apparently chased it down on foot with the car having a significant head start) yelling "Give me back my wife, you Son of a Bitch!!!!"
  • Big Damn Heroes: Sam appears at Farhampton to save Robin and Barney's wedding.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Barney isn't any good at lying to Robin about his schemes.
Robin: This isn't going to happen. Now, please promise me you haven't put some crazy scheme in motion.
Barney: [Beat] [Beat] [Beat] [Beat] I haven't put some crazy scheme in motion.
    Robin: Why did you pause?
Barney: [Beat] [Beat] [Beat] I didn't pause.
    • Barney didn't put a lot of effort to cover his schemes.
Sign: THE STAIRS ARE WET. NO, BROKEN. YEAH, THE STAIRS ARE BROKEN
    • Later when he made Cheryl disappear, Barney left a note to Jerry.
Jerry: She's been missing all day. And I found what it appears to be a suicide note on my bed, but it doesn't sound like her. "I'm going to kill my-Wait-For-It-self." (later) "So to summarize, I'm super-dead, totally bone Loretta, and I never loved you. Sheryl", which is misspelled.
  • Brick Joke: Several episodes earlier, Marshall informed Daphne he would be picking the music and put on "500 Miles." He said it would grow on her. Their first scene in this episode is a montage of them jamming out to it and Daphne admitting that he was right.
    • A few episodes back, Marshall tells Daphne that he was annoyed every time she started to chant "Drill, Baby, Drill" whenever they passed an oil drum. When Marshall drops Daphne at her daughter's presentation, the girl gives a cheerful speech in favor of oil companies, closing it with all the room chanting "Drill, Baby, Drill".
  • The Bus Came Back: James's dad shows up to replace the reverend who was shocked to death by Barney and Robin bragging about their history.
Reverend Gibbs: I now pronounce your ass saved.
  • Call-Back:
    • As Future!Ted mentioned, Lily did more than one tackle during the weekend. The second one was given to Zabka.
    • Ted brings up again "The Mosby Boys" and his fascination with mysteries. The only case he couldn't resolve was "The Pineapple Incident".
  • Continuity Nod:
    • A slow-jam version of the "bang, bang, bangity bang" song plays while Jerry and Loretta are stuck in an elevator.
    • Ted suspects William Zabka of being the one trying to frame him because of the last scene of "The Broken Code"
    • Daphne's daughter starts chanting "Drill, Baby, Drill" during her speech about oil. Marshall complained about Daphne doing this to spite him every time they stopped at a gas station.
  • December–December Romance: Barney attempts to make a match between Jerry and Loretta (his parents), while James wants to set up his biological parents Sam and Loretta. Sam wins.
  • Disappeared Dad: Lampshaded by Jerry's own admission.
Barney, you're getting married! You grow up so fast. Well, I actually missed thirty years of your life...
  • Elevator Failure: Barney invokes this to try to get Loretta and Jerry back together. He does it again for Loretta and Sam as a way to make up for them. James is not pleased by this, as he's in the elevator with them.
  • Funny Background Event: The Rastafarian surfer at the beach is "eating a sandwich" behind Ted, while he was questioning Cousin Jacques.
  • Imagine Spot: Barney and James start imagining a musical number with their parents and them as a typical sitcom family.
  • Kids Play Matchmaker: Barney and James both conspire for their mother to get back together with their respective fathers. Eventually, they learn Loretta has already secretly gotten back together with James' father Sam, much to Barney's disappointment.
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: In-Universe. William Zabka explains his motive for sabotaging Ted. People always treated him like a jerk because he played villains. He just wants to be liked by Barney.
  • Mood Whiplash: Right after Marshall drops Daphne at her daughter's school and they reconcile, Daphne's daughter starts giving an enthusiastic speech about oil, much to Marshall's chagrin.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Hinted to be Barney's plan for his dad's wife.
  • My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad: James and Barney start to fight over this.
  • N-Word Privileges: Played with during Marshall and Daphne's road trip.
Daphne: You are NOT allowed to use that word! Only WE'RE allowed to use that word!!
Marshall: I am so sorry. I'll never call you or anyone else a Trekkie again.
  • Put on a Bus: This is the last episode we see Daphne.
    • One irony about this trope is that Marshall & Marvin would take a bus afterwards in Bedtime Stories.
  • Removing the Rival: Because Barney wants to reunite Jerry and Loretta, he pays Ranjit to just take Cheryl far away from the Farhampton Hotel. Eventually Jerry catches on and gets her back.
  • Shipper on Deck: Barney and James try to reunite their mother with their respective father. Barney even sends away his stepmother. In fact, Loretta already went back with Sam.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Robin's reaction when she sees Barney and James in a Wimp Fight.
    Robin: I'm marrying this family.
  • "Well Done, Dad!" Guy: A female version. In this episode, turns out Daphne was telling the truth about getting in time for her daughter's presentation because she had missed a lot of her plays.
  • Where da White Women At?: Averted in Barney's reaction. At the wedding, Barney is the only one disturbed by Sam and Loretta's relationship, but only because Sam is going to marry him and Robin and he was hoping Loretta would get back together with his father. He eventually apologizes and approves Sam and Loretta's relationship.
