I thought of making myself a beautiful marionette. It must be wonderful, one that can dance, fence and turn somersaults.
Nick is puzzled by the case of two murdered teenage favorite candidates to the high-school general knowledge quiz qualifying for the state competition.
Renard seeks help in curing his and Juliette's destructive obsession, and turns to Monroe.
This episode provides examples of:
- Bio-Augmentation: The Monster of the Week is a Genio Innocuo, a harmless tortoise-like Wesen... usually. This one was altered in utero by his geneticist mother with Lowen DNA to make him assertive as Genio Innocuo usually aren't. Unfortunately, there are side effects...
- Black Guy Dies First: The first two victims, Brandon and Jennifer, are both black.
- Driven to Suicide: Pierce, realising he's been killing his friends, tries to throw himself off a building. Nick stops him.
- Have We Met?: Monroe, when Renard goes to him for help with his obsession. Renard denies it, but Monroe is unconvinced.
- Hybrid Monster: Pierce was genetically altered by his mother in the hope that it would make him strong as well as smart, but this results in him developing a split personality where he's basically both a Genio Innocuo and a Lowen, able to woge into his Lowen form when he feels endangered.
- Split Personality: Pierce's Lowen side comes across this way. It's a violent other personality that kills anyone it deems a threat, including Pierce's Decathlon teammates who seem like competition.
- Stalker with a Crush: Renard, to Juliette. After driving her home from a work event, he sneaks into the house and spies on her in the shower before seeming to realise what he's doing.
- Unskilled, but Strong: Pierce's Lowen side is strong enough to tear most humans apart, but when Lowen-Pierce confronts Nick in a fight he's clearly just lashing out in rage, allowing Nick to take him down with training.
- Van Helsing Hate Crimes: The Grimm diaries note that the Genio Innocuo's peaceful nature sure did make them easy to kill.
