The Consultant

In the prime universe, three people are killed by a mysterious force. Consulting the alternate universe's Fringe Division, the Fringe team learn the counterparts of the victims died in a plane crash at the same time. Walter crosses to the alternate universe and determines that, while the two universes normally resonate at different frequencies, someone was able to synchronize the resonation of these three people. Then a woman in the prime universe, whose parallel universe counterpart drowned when her taxi drove into a river, coughs up water and suffocates. Examining the taxi, Fringe Division discovers a device powered by amphilicite, a mineral used by David Robert Jones. Walter concludes that Jones is trying to collapse both universes.

Fauxlivia, Lincoln and Astrid suspect there is a mole within Fringe. Walter gives Fauxlivia the idea that it may be Broyles. She is able to trick Nina into revealing Broyles' complicity. Unknown to them, Broyles has agreed to collaborate with Jones in order to maintain a supply of life-saving medication for his son, Christopher. Jones has recently given Broyles another device with orders to plant it within the bridge connecting both universes. The Fringe team track down Broyles, who gives himself up in the bridge room, having previously contacted his prime universe counterpart to arrange his surrender.

Lincoln stays with Fauxlivia to continue to seek out Jones and his agents. Walter returns to the prime universe to study the device, recognizing it as Jones' work, and realizing if it had been activated, it could have collapsed both universes.

Tropes:

  • Drowning My Sorrows: Fauxlivia, who'd previously been established as The Teetotaler, starts drinking the booze Frank left in their apartment to deal with her grief over her Lincoln's death.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Fauxlivia manages to get Alt!Nina to confirming that Colonel Broyles is The Mole by hinting that she already has evidence that he's guilty, letting Nina fill in the gaps.
