Peter is put under house arrest after punching a fat, sarcastic man who insults him — who turns out to be a pregnant, mannish-looking woman who goes into labor from being assaulted. To curb his boredom, Peter builds a bar in the basement, and Lois becomes the star attraction with her racy lounge singing. Meanwhile, Stewie builds a time machine so he can bypass his teething stage.

"Mind Over Murder" contains example of (YMMV goes here):

  • Backhanded Apology: The heckling fan gives a particularly callous one after Peter demands (s)he apologize for jeering Chris. Peter responds with a knock out punch.
  • Bowdlerisation:
    • On Channel 4 in the UK, the cutaway gag where Peter ends up in Narnia after trying to get his sock is edited to remove Peter calling Mr. Tumnus a "goat bastard".
    • The Homicide: Life on Sesame Street cutaway, and Peter's speech leading up to it was also cut.
    • The name of Peter's basement pub is also changed; Channel 4 digitally erased the "e" on the end of "Pube", so that the sign above the bar now reads "Ye Old Pub".
  • The Chanteuse: Invoked. Peter decides to make Lois this for his bar to keep her from shutting it down, only to have her become the star attraction.
  • House Fire: A carelessly discarded cigarette ignites a fire that traps Peter and Lois in the basement. Fortunately, Stewie accidentally reverses time via his time machine to (unwittingly) save his parents' lives. It is also instrumental in expunging Peter's assault conviction, as in the "new present" he injures himself before having to take Chris to the soccer game, thus avoiding the confrontation in the first place.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Peter has Lois sing in the bar to distract her from her frustrations with it. Unfortunately, the other guys get a little too aroused by her performance and Lois ends up the highlight of the bar every night.
  • It's All About Me: Peter spends the episode infuriating Lois with his attitude.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: The pregnant woman that Peter punches. However, everyone else knew she was a woman and assume Peter did too.
  • Mama Bear: Lois was already in a bad mood with Peter over the bar, she is livid when she finds out he's got Stewie drunk.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Lois, to Peter's dismay.
  • Papa Wolf: Zigzagged. Peter demands an apology from the audience member jeering Chris, but slapping the beer out of his hands is what seems to really tip him off the edge.
  • Reset Button: How the episode ends.
  • Romantic Candlelit Dinner: Lois prepares Peter's favorite meal with a candlelit setting in an attempt to cheer him up during his house arrest, but Peter forgot about the date and spent the entire evening building a bar in the basement leaving Lois waiting all night.
  • Running Gagged: This is the final episode to have a macabre title that had nothing to do with the plot. This trait was dropped since it was getting difficult to distinguish which episode was being worked on at the time.
  • Thought They Knew Already: Peter's excuse when Lois finally puts him on the spot for his behaviour:
Lois: Peter, when was the last time you told me you loved me?
Peter: Well, you know I love you.
    Lois: I wanna hear it.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Peter allows his sons Chris and Stewie to become intoxicated and associate with adult strangers (and buxom women for Stewie) in his bar. This upsets Lois.
  • Underappreciated Women's Work: Lois expresses her frustrations over not being able to do anything to relax for herself after spending most of the day cooking and cleaning and not getting any thanks from the family for her efforts.
  • Unsettling Gender-Reveal: The loud-mouthed, sarcastic fat man Peter punched in the face is actually a woman who is nine months pregnant.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
  • Your Tomcat Is Pregnant: A weird variant occurs when Peter gets into an argument with a coarse-looking, hirsute parent with a husky voice at a ball game, and winds up punching this person in the face. Everyone else is horrified that he'd hit a woman, yet Peter refuses to believe his victim isn't male... but the punch induces labor and she gives birth right there in the bleachers.
Boy: Hey, you hit my mom!
Peter: No, I hit your dad.
Man: Whoa, stand back. Give her some air.
Peter: You mean, "Give him some air".
Woman: Call an ambulance! She's going into labor!
Peter: You mean, "He's going into labor".
    [Baby cries]
    Peter: Whoops.
