Go To

For Your Ed Only is an episode of the 3rd season of Cartoon Network's critically acclaimed Ed, Edd n Eddy.

Plot Synopsis: After Eddy steals Sarah's diary, Ed and Edd work to return it to Sarah without giving her a reason to pound them for the diary being missing.

Tropes

  • An Aesop: Respect others privacy and keep your nose out of their personal business.
  • Bad News, Irrelevant News: The bad news is that the Eds are all stuck in bubblegum and can't get out - even Ed's parents don't seem to know their son needs help while the irrelevant news is Jonny and Plank have joined them. Even Jonny doesn't know how he got involved when just minutes ago he was all the way in China.
  • Balloonacy: The Eds, Jonny and Plank float away on a bubble gum bubble blown by Ed, until Kevin pops it. Later, Eddy tries to use the same trick again to escape Sarah; this time, it's Edd's hat blown up by Ed that carry them aloft.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: After Eddy and Double D tell Kevin "Hasta la vista" and "C'est la vie" as they leave him tied up, Kevin looks toward the viewer and comments "This show needs subtitles".
  • Bubblegum Popping: Kevin sees Jonny and the Eds floating in a bubblegum bubble and decides to pop it by hitting a baseball at it. This causes the Eds to crash into Sarah's bedroom and Jonny and Plank to plow through the ground all the way to China.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Eddy does this by deliberately stealing Sarah's diary and making her panic about it going missing.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Parodied, it backfires hard. Edd's super-strength bubble gum formula that when blown into a bubble, it can pull the chewer into the air. Eddy remembers they had it (while Edd and Ed failed to) and Eddy nearly wastes his opportunity to escape Sarah's wrath by giving the gum not to Ed, the strongest of the three, but instead to Edd, the weakest of the Eds. Ed manages to blow a bubble into Edd and the Eds manage to temporarily escape from Sarah, but then Edd spits the gum out due to Ed's germs and they plummet back down.
  • Continuity Nod: Sarah's crush on Double D is mentioned here again, with Sarah commenting on how cute he is and writing about her dreams of Double D buying her a horse.
    • After the Eds and Jonny get stuck in a wad of gum, Edd and Eddy bring up the companion episode "Once Upon an Ed" which had the Eds stuck in a wall for the entire episode.
  • Digging to China: Jonny and Plank - just like in the cartoons! It’s also the page image for this trope.
  • Downer Ending: The Eds all get stuck inside bubble gum and can't escape much like a spider's prey tangled in web. Eddy complains at this point Downer Endings are typical for them.
  • Happy Place: Ed says "I'm in my happy place, Double-D" when he takes the gum from Eddy's mouth. The episode then makes a Running Gag out of Ed mentioning that he's in or out of his happy place, depending on how the situation with the diary is going.
  • Jerkass: Kevin pops the bubble gum balloon that was keeping Ed, Eddy, Jonny and Plank up in the air by shooting a baseball at it, causing the Eds to crash land into Sarah's room (Jonny and Plank got China). If anything, Kevin should be blamed for Sarah's room getting destroyed, not the Eds.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: One of the few episodes where Sarah's anger towards the Eds is justified.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Eddy manages to tie Kevin to a tree after he catches them with the diary. That is the last we see of him for the rest of the episode.
  • Match Cut: After looking through Sarah's diary and finding an unflattering flipbook picture of himself, Eddy is left growling in annoyance, which dissolves to Sarah growling in frustration at not being able to find her diary.
  • Never My Fault: When the Eds are caught with Sarah's diary by the latter, Eddy blames Double D for this, ignoring the fact that Eddy was the one who stole the diary in the first place, not that it matters to Sarah as she is going to beat up the Eds anyway.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Ed freaks out when he realizes that Sarah's diary is missing and that he'll get blamed for it.
Ed: She'll tell Mom, and Mom'll tell Dad, and he'll say "Not now! I just got home from work."
  • Secret Diary: The main premise of the episode, involving the Eds finding Sarah's diary.
  • Sticky Situation: The episode ends with the Eds stuck in gum, along with Jonny and Plank, with Jonny wondering how they ended up in this situation.
  • Tempting Fate: Eddy says that Edd's gum is indestructible... just before Kevin pops the bubble by hitting it with a baseball.
  • Tsundere: Brought up here, with Sarah's diary confirming she still likes Double D, but she still beats him up alongside Ed and Eddy because "give those cute ones an inch and they'll take a mile," making her a strong Type-A. Curiously, she also writes about Eddy in her diary, making a cartoon doodle of him being crushed by a brick.
