Recap / Donkey Kong Country S 1 E 24 The Big Chill Out

Go To

A heat wave hits Kong Bongo, and DK and Diddy start selling coconuts topped with snow - the Coconut Chill! Bluster becomes envious of their success and convinces DK to join a partnership with him to impress Candy. Meanwhile, King K.Rool and his forces become addicted to the Chills and conspire to take as many as they can.

Tropes:

  • Bad Boss: K. Rool has Klump knock out passing Kritters to steal their Coconut Chills. Naturally, the Kritters are soon close to mutiny before K. Rool is able to salvage the situation.
  • Big Red Button: The KCCBM is launched by pushing one. However, Klump pushes it before K. Rool could:
    K. Rool: I wanted to push the big red button!
Klump: But you said, "Blast off!" and I didn't get to say anything!
  • Comically Small Bribe: DK and Diddy sell the Coconut Chill business to Bluster for a measly two bananas. Bluster, thinking he's going to be even richer than before, accepts the offer without hesitating.
  • Dark Reprise: The cheery, jazzy, and upbeat “Road to Success” is followed up by a more somber blues-styled reprise, with Diddy lamenting the hard work he and DK have to do once Bluster takes over the Coconut Chill operation.
  • Distressed Dude: Cranky, in the third act, winds up in a barrel of Coconut Chills in the shipment that gets stolen by K. Rool. He ends the episode sitting under a blanket as he recovers from the chill.
  • Epic Fail: Klump somehow fails to replicate the Coconut Chill, which is literally just coconut milk with ice. His attempt, which he dubs a "Cool K. Rool", leaves him spluttering and spitting smoke.
  • Flash In The Pan Fad: The Coconut Chill ends up being this. It's immensely popular during the heatwave and makes DK and Diddy (and then Bluster) a ton of bananas, but then a cold snap hits the island, ensuring that nobody will be buying them anymore.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Subverted. The "K. Rool to Crystal Coconut and Back Mssile" doesn't spell anything, though Klump tries.
Klump: Uh, Cuss-boom? I think you need to recruit a few more vowels, sir.
  • Furry Reminder: Cranky is worried that the heat wave the island is undergoing will have K. Rool and the Kremlings more active - and he’s right.
    • At the end of the episode, a sudden cold snap replaces the heat wave. Combine this with drinking a whole shipment of Coconut Chills as fast as possible, and K. Rool and the other lizards are paralyzed on the floor like the cold-blooded reptiles they are.
Cranky: (on why the Coconut will be safe for a few weeks) Because after glomming down a few thousand of those confounded Coconut Chills, it'll take that fool K. Rool, and his pack of cold-blooded lizards at least that long to thaw out!
  • Halfway Plot Switch: K.Rool decides to use his KCCBM to steal Coconut Chills instead of the Crystal Coconut.
  • Heat Wave: The entire episode takes place during one.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Subverted. Bluster comments that he’s a success right now and has more to offer Candy, unlike DK, who’s still loafing around waiting for the Crystal Coconut’s prophecy to come true. Diddy is quick to point out the hypocrisy - Bluster only has all of his wealth and business because it was handed down to him by his mother. But DK thinks that this trope is in effect, which is what motivates him to try to get into business.
    • Cranky, despite being as brusque as always, correctly points out that DK has no business sense and him trying would end horribly for him. Sure enough, Bluster uses his ruthless business sense to take over the Coconut Chill operation, taking all the profit for himself and forcing DK and Diddy into doing all the hard work.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Realizing that they're "looking for the easy life the hard way", Donkey and Diddy Kong sell their shares of the Coconut Chill business to Bluster for a mere two bananas. Bluster thinks he's duped them out of a fortune, but they're just happy to not have to work for him anymore.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After guilting DK with his lack of financial success, then forcibly taking over the Coconut Chill business and making DK and Diddy do all the hard work, Bluster gets hit with this hard. In quick succession: a cold snap hits the island, meaning nobody will be buying Coconut Chills anymore; Bluster gets buried under a snowball courtesy of Eddie; and his mother forces him to sell the business.
    • Also happens to K. Rool. He manages to steal the shipment of Coconut Chills, but the cold snap combined with drinking all of them has consequences (see Meaningless Villain Victory below).
  • Lonely at the Top: What ultimately comes of DK's quest for financial success. The Coconut Chill business may be booming, but Candy is annoyed with him becoming a "boring old Bluster clone" and dumps him.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: K. Rool succeeds in stealing a whole shipment of Coconut Chills with his KCCBM for him and the Kremlings... only for a cold snap to hit the island. This, combined with them drinking their entire shipment, ends up with every single Kremling paralyzed and shivering on the floor.
  • Never My Fault: K. Rool orders Klump to knock down his Kritters to steal their Coconut Chills. After seeing them surround K. Rool and Klump with clubs, K. Rool blames Klump for their predicament.
  • Redundant Romance Attempt: DK's sudden interest in big business is born out of the belief that this will impress Candy, due to comments made by Bluster. Naturally, Candy is not happy with her boyfriend becoming a "boring old Bluster clone" and sets him straight.
  • Slobs Versus Snobs: The lazy, poor but Nice Guy Donkey Kong versus the rich but spoiled Jerkass Bluster.
  • Start My Own: Donkey at first tries to go into a barrel-making business. To call his first attempt at a barrel shoddy would be generous.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: At the end, Cranky assures Donkey Kong that while the big ape has no sense for business, he still has his role as guardian of the Crystal Coconut and future ruler of Kongo Bongo.
