Recap / Death Note – Ep. 32: Selection

Go To

The first half of the episode shows Teru Mikami's story and how he grew up to become obsessed with justice. He was bullied in school and considered it his duty to stand up to evildoers. When his mother insists that his standing up to miscreants at school is going too far, Mikami sees her as siding with them. When she is killed in a car accident along with four of his school's bullies, he sees it as divine justice. When Kira appears years later and begins to kill evildoers, it only confirms Mikami's beliefs. He believes Kira to be God, who has recognized his crusade against evil and chosen him.

At Task Force headquarters, Light sees Kiyomi Takada, a girl he dated in college, on TV as Kira's new spokesperson to replace Demigawa, chosen by Mikami. Light tells the Task Force that he knew her and they may be able to get information about Kira by him meeting her. They agree, but Aizawa insists on wiretapping their meeting place. Light calls her and tells her that he'd like to meet her, saying that Misa is not intelligent enough for him. When Light meets Takada at the hotel, she receives a call from Mikami. Light manipulates the situation to not only let Mikami know that he is Kira, but to get rid of the wiretaps in the room. Once he's free to speak, he tells Kiyomi that he is Kira and asks her to help him rule the world.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Amoral Attorney: Teru Mikami inverts this as he's not amoral, but too moral.
  • Answers to the Name of God: Light responds "Yes" when Mikami inquires over the phone if he's God.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: Mikami firmly believes that humans are divided into two categories: good and evil. His beliefs are so strong that he believed his mother, who was telling him to stop endangering himself to stop bullies, was evil.
  • Bluff the Eavesdropper: Light manages to contact Mikami as Kira despite being watched by his team. He then tricks them in order to remove all microphones and tapes in the room by making it appear that his life is in jeopardy by having Kira on the phone.
  • Bully Hunter: Mikami's ultimate motive, as he was bullied in school.
  • The Bus Came Back: Kiyomi makes an unexpected reappearance.
  • Character Catchphrase: Mikami's "Delete" when killing someone.
  • Classical Music: This episode makes heavy use of Bach and Vivaldi.
  • The Dragon: Invoked by Light when he asks Kiyomi to become "the goddess of the new world".
  • Freudian Excuse: The first half of the episode reveals the origins of Mikami's Black-and-White Insanity.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Light's more than willing to play on his old girlfriend's feelings for him to get what he wants.
  • Spy Speak: Light uses this to confirm to Mikami that he's Kira, or in his case, "God".
