Recap / Dan Vs S 3 E 7 Dan Vs The DMV

Go To

Dan has to go to the DMV to renew his driver's license.

This episode contains examples of the following Tropes:

  • Call It Karma: Faced with being killed by the DMV's alligators, Chris admits he ate alligator once while in New Orleans and feels he probably deserves this.
  • Driving Test: Dan has to practice parallel parking... while surrounded by flames.
  • Due to the Dead: Stuck in line, Dan steals a number from a long dead man in line. Chris objects on these grounds, but lets it go quickly enough.
  • Exact Words: A couple times, Elise mentions knowing a few things Chris spoke about with Dan in conversations she was not present for. Chris becomes irritated and takes this to mean that she has had him bugged, though she repeatedly denies it. Though in the maze, she reveals that she actually bugged Dan. This placates Chris though Dan makes clear his own displeasure.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • During The Teaser, the radio host Dan is listening to suggests that the government is run by half-human/half-animal hybrids.
    • A couple jokes are about Elise having the guys bugged. When the transmission gets cut off by the trip to Desk C-130, she knows it means trouble and heads down to the DMV.
  • Fun with Acronyms: DMV is revealed to have originally stood for "Dungeon of Minotaur Violence."
  • Half-Human Hybrid: The minotaur.
  • I Am a Humanitarian: The minotaur prompts this discussion.
Chris: Why do minotaurs eat people? Cows don't eat people. People don't eat people.
    Dan: For the most part.
  • Lampshade Hanging: "More to the point, what does defeating a minotaur have to do with getting my license renewed?"
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Lloyd is left to fend for himself against the minotaur.
  • Never Say "Die": Played with. Elise uses "death" and "dead" a couple times early in the episode, but when threatening Lloyd, she's deliberately evasive.
Elise: You are going to tell me where my husband is or I am going to... something, something, something, sword!
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Dan once sued his own grandmother over getting socks for Christmas.
    • Dan got Chris a watch by stealing from a dead guy.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Lloyd, the guy Dan has to deal with at the DMV.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Lloyd's name is never given in dialogue, so the characters just refer to him as "the DMV guy." Viewers can see his actual name, though, on his employee of the month plaque.
    • Actually, Elise uses his name when he tries to sneak off.
  • Skewed Priorities: Dan is upset about the alligators eating his crossbow. Chris points out they should worry about being eaten themselves.
  • Skyward Scream: Dan's Once an Episode gag is given a twist. After screaming about the DMV, the officer who told him to go there comes back to cite him for noise violation. Dan stares at him, completely speechless.
  • Take a Number: Dan is told to take a number and wait. The wait is long. So Dan tries to speed things up by "trading" numbers with a man who died while waiting his turn.
  • Tempting Fate: Upon arriving at the DMV, Dan is certain it won't take long.
