Songs

"Maybe She's Not Such A Heinous Bitch After All" (sung by Rachel Bloom)

  • Aside Comment:
Rebecca: For once I don't want her to have a cancerous mole.
    Background singers: Dark!
  • Black Comedy: Rebecca cheerfully sings how she used to think her mother was going to kill her, how she wanted to use a cup to bash her brains in, and that she wished she had a cancerous mole.
  • Call-Back: To the first episode, where Naomi talks about a possible cancerous mole.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: Black and white, for a sixties homage number.
  • Freud Was Right: "I know it sounds like I'm falling in love (In love!) Well, when we're finding a mate, it's our parents we're thinking of!"
  • Lyrical Dissonance: The '60s girl group sound is often upbeat (like here) and focuses on big emotions. Here the lyrics are about Rebecca feeling less resentment towards her mother than before.
  • Pastiche: Of 1960s girl groups. The famous drum intro of The Ronettes' "Be My Baby" gets quoted.

"I Feel Like This Isn't About Me" (sung by Bayne Gibby)

  • Pastiche: Of Brazilian bossa nova.
  • Psychological Projection: Cordelia comes to the realization here that everyone at Whitefeather has been treating her weirdly not for anything she's done, but because they're dropping buckets of this onto her over Rebecca.

Tropes in the episode:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Rebecca attempts suicide by taking an entire bottle of anti anxiety meds, but she finally asks for help, deciding to not kill herself last minute.
  • Call-Back: "Who's the New Guy" can be heard as Cornelia walks around the office.
  • Creator Cameo: The flight attendant is show writer Elisabeth Kiernan Averick.
  • Driven to Suicide: Rebecca at the end of the episode.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Audra Levine may not be the most pleasant person, but she's not wrong when she says Naomi is up to something, in this case, covertly drugging Rebecca with anti-anxiety pills and is not just being nice to Rebecca for no reason.
  • Only Sane Man: Cornelia becomes this to Whitefeather and Associates.
  • Put on a Bus: Karen’s absence in this episode is because she “took a leave of absence to become a hand and foot model”
  • Silent Credits: This being a darker episode of the series, the credits roll in silence.
  • Straw Feminist: Maya behaves like this through the episode, believing she's entitled to Cornelia's time just because they're women and asking her to go to a vagina event. She also claims that Darryl and Jim don't respect women for pestering Cornelia when she's being just as obnoxious.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Naomi seemingly does this after she finds out Rebecca was looking at articles about suicide.
  • Totally Radical: Maya starts to use "Millennial-speak." Some of it is genuine slang, while some is probably completely made up: "I am. Totes. Hundo P."
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Naomi drugs Rebecca with anti-anxiety meds after seeing her browse methods of suicide.
  • Wham Episode: Rebecca attempts suicide.
