* GroupCostumeFail: Troy and Abed go as Ripley in the power loader and the alien queen from ''Film/{{Aliens}}'', respectively, after spending days creating their costumers. When Troy realizes that girls are turned off by the "nerdy" costume, he switches to a shirtless "sexy Dracula" instead, upsetting Abed.

* BlackAndNerdy: This episode actually {{deconstruct|ion}}s it for Troy. Hanging out with Abed has turned him from a JerkJock who could get ladies easily, into a huge nerd. This leads to his brief foray into being a sexy Dracula. However, in the end he realizes he values Abed's friendship more. And even though he's roofied at the end like everyone else he seems to have absorbed this lesson.

* DarkerAndEdgier: While still a sitcom, the characters are in genuine danger and Rich suggests that within six hours the fever will kill all of the infected, meaning everyone was at risk of dying in this episode.

%% * OutOfGenreExperience

to:

%% * OutOfGenreExperienceOutOfGenreExperience: The episode places the Study Group in an actual ZombieApocalypse when their classmates all become TechnicallyLivingZombie.

* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Of sorts, but except for the Dean all the characters are trapped in a school full of zombies. As a result, this episode shows how they would react in a truly dangerous situation:
** Jeff, Britta and Rich prove to ultimately be selfish characters. Britta and Rich, likely out of a fear for their own lives and how the others would react, hid that they were infected in the hopes they were TheImmune, despite Rich previously pointing out that anyone bit should leave before they barricaded the study room. Jeff meanwhile is being more pragmatic, pointing out to Abed that they can't help Shirley or Chang if they get bit, but he's more concerned with keeping his suit clean than the actual danger that they are in.
** Abed, Troy, Annie and surprisingly Chang prove to be the most noble of the survivors. Annie becomes the most dedicated with finding a way to save their classmates and refuses to call them zombies, Abed tries to save Shirley and Chang when they get separated while later pulling a HeroicSacrifice to save Troy, Troy sacrifices himself to save everyone at Greendale, and Chang stops to help Shirley back up which stops him from following Jeff and the others.
** Shirley and the Dean prove unable to handle the situation, the former mostly freaking out while the latter simply does what the army tells him to do.

* TheyPlottedAPerfectlyGoodWaste: Let's be honest. No one expected this to be more than a one-off joke, especially when everyone ended the episode without their memories. Then Shirley and Chang's hook-up becomes a major plot point, as well as the fact that they don't remember it adding drama to the overall story.
