Recap / Code Lyoko S 1 E 9

Go To

During class, everyone's cell phones suddenly go off, and all of them are confiscated. Sissi is not happy about this, and organizes a protest in response. Yumi joins the protest, since having cell phones is a necessary part of the group's fight against X.A.N.A., but Odd takes a more direct approach and picks a lock to take the gang's phones back.

Meanwhile, Jeremie investigates the strange occurrence and learns that X.A.N.A. is using the school's antenna to take over the nearby television antenna. From there, X.A.N.A. could take over a laser-equipped, military satellite. While Odd and Ulrich head to Lyoko to prevent X.A.N.A. from doing so, Yumi stays behind to support Sissi's protest. As they head for the tower, X.A.N.A. succeeds in taking over a military satellite and turns it on the school. Odd, who gets devirtualized, has to keep Yumi safe while Aelita and Ulrich look for a tower that seems to be invisible.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adults Are Useless: Instead of investigating the phones all going off in the school at once, something confirmed by Yumi who's in a separate class to the others, the teachers decide to confiscate all the kids mobile phones as retribution. This is despite that this is clearly not a hoax by one mischievous student, and could even be explained away as interference, but they stick to their guns for a shockingly long time. Even if all the students' phones were on, the oddity that all of them went off at once does not ring alarm bells.
  • Cave Behind The Waterfall: The Tower is located in an icy cavern behind a waterfall, which stumps Ulrich and Aelita for quite a long time. Even Jeremie is confused by it, as he can visually see it on his map. The issue here is that his map is top-down 2D, not 3D.
  • Foreshadowing: When the phones are initially taken away, Ulrich comments that XANA’s going to love this. Turns out that, as this was his plan all along, he really loves it.
  • Karma Houdini: Odd and Ulrich suggest stealing back their mobiles, as, without them, it would make coordination between them tricky. While Odd successfully retrieves all the phones for the Lyoko warriors, the teacher do notice that the locker was opened and phones were missing, but it never gets traced back to Odd. More crucially; despite Yumi also receiving her phone in the raid, she doesn't get outed either at any point.
    • There's also the teachers' rampant disregard of common sense throughout the episode, especially in Principal Delmas' case, which goes mostly unanswered. His brilliant idea to disconnect the school Antenne causes Jim to be zapped by X.A.N.A. when the latter tries to do so and the strike the students put on only solidifies his decision to not return the phones any time soon. It takes the satellite finally firing for the first time to get him to take any sensible action, and even then the only thing he can do is shepard the protesting student body off of the campus.
  • Kill Sat: The key to X.A.N.A.'s plan is to hijack a satellite that can fire a laser at any point on the earth with precise aim. His goal is to kill Yumi specifically and nearly succeeded.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Aelita doesn't get to the tower in time, and XANA successfully hijacks the satellite and fires off several lasers to kill Yumi, and each time Yumi narrowly avoiding the blasts primarily because XANA is getting used to the system. When XANA wises up to Yumi running, he compensates for this and finally targets her. Yumi is ultimately saved by the return-to-the-past at the last second with the laser literally a millisecond away from incinerating her, had Jeremie and Aelita been a nigh second late, XANA would have killed her permanently in a very gruesome way. note
  • Waving Signs Around: Various students protesting the teachers taking their phones away in Sissi's protest.
  • Why Isn't It Attacking?: Odd ponders a variant of this question when the Hornets don't attack right away. Jeremie theorizes that they just want to hold him and Ulrich there until XANA completes his plan.
  • Xanatos Gambit: XANA's tampering of the mobile phones seems to serve multiple purposes; It not only acts as a "dry run" for his plan but results in the students' mobiles confiscated, making communication difficult between the Lyoko team.
