Recap / Class S01E06 "Detained"

Go To

Miss Quill consigns Charlie, April, Ram, Tanya, and Matteusz to detention while she goes to do something else. Somewhere in a black void, a group of floating rocks strike a tear in the Rift just as it opens, causing the room and all five characters to be transported to it. One of the rocks appears as a meteorite in the room.

All the characters except Charlie feel mysteriously angry, and Charlie isn't doing well because he's revealed to be claustrophobic. Matteusz picks up the rock and suddenly feels impelled to remember confessing his sexuality to his grandmother, and then to confess to everybody else that he's afraid of what Charlie is capable of.

Tanya theorises that since the rock has some kind of consciousness attached to it, and forces people to tell the truth, asking them questions might lead to answers about the situation. She picks up the rock next and confesses that she believes that all the others only tolerate her because she's younger than them. Interrogating her reveals that they are in some kind of prison and that the consciousness attached to the rock is that of an inmate.

Further confessions and interrogations reveal from the kids' point of view that Ram truly loves April but fears that she doesn't return his affections to the same degree; and that April in fact doesn't love him and doubts how long his love will last.

It is revealed that the space is a prison outside time and space, that transforms the guilt of its inmates to anger, to the point that the prisoner killed his four cellmates. Charlie notices that he isn't experiencing the same feelings of anger as the other three and speculates that the rock might not affect him as it did the others, and that he might be able to do something to help them escape. As the other four begin to physically fight each other, he confesses without picking up the rock that he constantly longs to wipe out the Shadowkin and Matteusz is the only thing stopping him. He then picks up the rock and manages to psychically destroy the spirit of the prisoner, what the prisoner seems to have been hoping for all along. The room and the five characters are returned to the school.

A portal suddenly appears and tentacles of energy try to drag Charlie into it, because the prison wants a new inmate and he's the guiltiest one. Quill suddenly appears and shoots the portal, destroying it. She has a new scar on her face and her hair is visibly longer and disarranged. She presents Charlie with her dead parasite in a plastic bag, and threateningly explains that she has free will again.

Tropes that appear in the episode:

  • Hate Plague: The "prison" causes all the characters to become increasingly angry and hostile to each other, except Charlie because he's having a minor panic attack and not focusing enough.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: The Prisoner is trapped in the asteroid and wants someone to end his suffering, which he cannot do.
  • Let Me Tell You a Story: Matteusz talking to Charlie about Susan from The Chronicles of Narnia was relevant to the point he was making that the arguments they were having shouldn't ruin their friendships.
  • Locked in a Room: The premise of the episode - they are all locked inside Miss Quill's physics classroom.
  • Love Confession: The episode features several of those. Matteusz says he loves Charlie, Charlie says he loves Matteusz, Ram says he loves April and April doesn't love him back to the same degree.
  • Morality Chain: Charlie reveals that his love for Matteusz is all that's stopping him from using the Cabinet to exterminate the Shadow Kin.
  • My Skull Runneth Over: What happens from holding the asteroid, as it forces people to confess and will fry their brain if they hold it too long.
  • Prison Ship: The asteroid contains a prisoner.
  • Pocket Dimension: The asteroid turns Class 3B into one.
  • Psychic Nosebleed: Charlie bleeds from the nose and eyes while struggling with the rock.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The Prisoner is imprisoned in the asteroid.
