The murder of an armored truck security guard during a heist requires Esposito to seek the assistance of his ex-fiancée, who was previously convicted for a similar heist several years earlier.

Tropes that appear in this episode:

  • Artificial Intelligence: Lucy, Castle’s electronic assistant, shows signs of this. She even appears to have a crush on Castle.
  • Bathroom Breakout: Sonia escapes custody after she asks to take a shower at Esposito's mom's apartment.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Despite being a machine, Lucy flirts with Castle and antagonizes Beckett. Gender reversed at the end of the episode after Beckett changed the assistant to have a male personality who goes by the name Linus.
  • Dating Catwoman: Downplayed. A decade ago, Esposito was engaged to Sonia, a career thief. He had to personally arrest her, and she spend the following years in prison. Now she is co-operating with the police in an investigation, in hopes of an early release. The couple still have feelings for each other, and Esposito promises to wait for her until she is released.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Esposito is the primary focus of the episode. We get introduced to his former lover and several members of his family, despite past episodes depicting his a loner.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Esposito had to choose between the woman he loved and his dedication to the law.
  • Locked in a Freezer: Played for Laughs. When Beckett grows tired of Lucy's petty jealousy, she stuffs her into the fridge, which doesn't stop her from immediately turning out the lights.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Sonia gets a glow-up after getting out of prison.
  • Tempting Fate: Sonia and other characters frequently mention that she only has about three months left in prison until she gets out on parole. In the end, her escape and subsequent kidnapping of Esposito have earned her at least another two years behind bars, and even then only because Esposito convinced the DA to give her a plea deal.
