This episode shows examples of...

  • Broken Pedestal: Beckett does not take it well when she learns that her training officer, a man she loved and admired, lied about his connection to the case and was hunting for the treasure as well.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The episode title refers to both the clue to the treasure and the race to find it.
  • Finding the Bug: Beckett and Castle are at the office of a murdered bail bondsman, investigating, when Beckett's radio emits high-pitched static. Using the radio and the volume of the static as a guide, they discover a bug hidden in the bondsman's calculator. It later turns out to have been planted by the guy's wife, who overheard him planning to cut her out of a million dollars in jewels being recovered from a robbery, and she murdered him for it.
  • Noodle Incident: Plenty between Royce and Beckett giving little details and plenty of Noodle Implements.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: When Stuckey, an elderly criminal, manages to escape Ryan and Esposito, they note that they'll never hear the end of it. Cue a Gilligan Cut to the precinct where Castle has covered their desks with canes, adult diapers, and prune juice.
  • Properly Paranoid: Alexis brings Castle breakfast in bed. He immediately assumes she wants something. When she protests, he lists the other three times she made him breakfast in bed and the things she asked for on each occasion. She wants a vespa.
  • Student/Teacher Romance: Deconstructed as there are plenty of hints that Beckett had a thing for Royce before giving an Anguished Declaration of Love to him though she claims it was an act.
  • This Is Reality: Beckett and Castle go looking for the treasure when they find the final clue... and Castle learns what happens when you find items of worth that are stolen property with a detective...
Castle: Unfortunately, when you go treasure hunting with a cop, she makes you return the treasure to its rightful owner.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: Carter's wife killed him when she learned she was being left out of getting the treasure.
  • Treasure Hunt Episode: All of the suspects in the case turn out to hunting for a cache of jewels stolen in the 90s that are now worth ver $30 million dollars as well as Mike Royce, Beckett's training officer.
