In their attempt to identify the murderer of a has-been boxer living among a group of prostitutes who detest him, the team must establish which one of several life-threatening acts enacted against him that night actually killed him.

  • Artistic License – Law: One of the bigger examples of the show - the investigation makes clear that Happy's death occurred because his Rasputinian Death weakened him enough that he could not save himself when he fell into the pool, but everybody who caused said injuries gets to walk away without even a mention of a Felony Murder charge.
  • The Coroner Doth Protest Too Much: Even Doc Robbins is shaking his head when he has to report a series of attempted murders as contributing factors in the victim's accidental drowning.
  • Everybody Did It: More like everybody tried to do it. There are at least four unsuccessful attempts made on the victim's life in a single night.
  • Impromptu Tracheotomy: One of the murder attempts was by shooting Happy with a crossbow to the neck, which ironically caused a tracheotomy that saved Happy from dying from a throat swollen shut by allergic reaction.
  • Karma Houdini: Everybody involved in the murder of Happy ends up being released (or accused of crimes other than said murder, misdemeanors at best). Stokes even makes a sarcastic quip that a good enough Amoral Attorney would have convinced the jury that the chair did it.
  • Lotsa People Try to Dun It: There are at least four unsuccessful attempts made on the victim's life in a single night... which all cancelled each other out.
  • Rasputinian Death: After examining every attack on the boxer's life (including being shot by an arrow, getting both stabbed and poisoned, and being hit over the head with a metal pipe), the ultimate cause of death is the chair he sits on breaking, sending him into a nearby pool in which he has a cardiac arrest.
  • Who Murdered the Asshole: Happy is showcased in the flashbacks to not have been a nice guy and everybody in the building, for one reason or another, tried to kill him the same night. In the end, nobody technically killed the asshole - a broken chair dropped him into the pool and he drowned, although the many injuries he got through the night from the various murder attempts made it impossible for him to prevent that. Stokes even makes a sarcastic quip that an Amoral Attorney would have placed all of the guilt on the chair.
  • X-Ray of Pain: After being poisoned which causes his throat to swell, Lorenzo "Happy" Morales is shot with an arrow through the neck and his windpipe is shown being severed.
