Recap / Burn Notice S 4 E 3 Made Man

Go To

As part of continuing Jesse's hunt, the man who both he and the Organization are after, the team head down to the dock to find a lead on a source Jesse only knew as Cobra (because of his raspy voice).

While they're at the dock, Jesse spots a shake-down operation and decides to get involved. Turns out the mafia is hitting the docks.

  • Godzilla Threshold: Tony has a corrupt FBI agent on the payroll, but he's also been getting hassled by Gio for not bringing in enough cash. Sam believes Tony is desperate enough to do something that could land him in the kind of trouble that a corrupt agent couldn't make go away.
  • Jumped at the Call: Seeing Hank get roughed up by Mafia goons prompts Jesse to intervene. When told of how severe the problem is, he's more than happy to volunteer the team's services.
  • The Mafia: The mob is using the docks.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The plan calls for Tony helping steal the shipment and leaving with the goods, while Sam is "detained" by Hank. Problem is, being a boss makes Tony feel he's above that sort of thing now, so he refuses to do it. To keep things on track, Jesse gets Sam to tell his No One Gets Left Behind story. Tony agrees to go on in, but the story ends up inspiring him to go back for Sam rather than flee.
  • No One Gets Left Behind:
    • When Sam led a team into El Salvador back in the '80s, they had to fend off a death squad attack and his buddy, Pete, was left paralyzed. Pete insisted he be left behind so the others could save themselves, but Sam refused and ordered the other team members to retreat. Sam spent the next couple days holed up in a church with Pete, looking after him until they were rescued.
    • The above story ends up being why Tony goes back for Sam, much to everyone's surprise.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The team abandons Tony to face Gio and his men alone. The episode ends with Tony in the prison hospital, having survived a confrontation alone against four armed men and charged with Gio's murder.
  • Running Gag: Everyone mocks Jesse's nickname for his intel source, "Cobra".
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sam is pissed at Jesse for suggesting telling Tony the No One Gets Left Behind story. He hates having to use such a tale to get on the good side of a criminal.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Everyone is thrown for a loop when Tony, hardened criminal boss, decides No One Gets Left Behind and goes back for Sam to "rescue" him.
Michael: A spy's job is to get into the head of his adversary, to know how he'll behave and use it against him. But human behavior is about as predictable as the weather. Sometimes the most hardened criminal can decide to be noble at the most inconvenient time.
