Recap / Burn Notice S 4 E 1 Friends And Enemies

Go To

Having been recruited (kidnapped) by the organization that burned him, Michael agrees to help them hunt the man who is hunting them (and anyone else who gets close to him).

On the home front, Sam and Fi are helping a tax guy who has gotten involved with some bikers.

  • All Bikers are Hells Angels: Kinda justified, in that what other kind of biker are Team Westen likely to run into?
  • Blackmail: With the material that Fiona got from the Breakers' bar, Michael and Sam cook some books to make it look like Winston worked closely with the gang in all sorts of ways. As Mike and Sam explain, this would mean that the cops investigating Winston's death would suddenly have very good reason to look into the Breakers, connect them to that death and other assorted crimes, and shut down the whole operation for good. Big Ed is cowed and prepared to call off the green light, but Hunter throws everyone a curve by rebelling.
  • Chekhov's Gun: At Gregory Hart's hideout, Michael glances at the desk and sees assorted documents. One of them is a government file, which Michael later deduces relates to a federal investigation into Hart himself. As a result, Michael has a good idea where to start looking for more intel.
  • Contrasting Replacement Character: As an Organization handler, Vaughn immediately distinguishes himself from Carla by at least acting more personable towards Michael. He treats Mike like an equal partner with a wide berth rather than a pawn to be ordered about and blackmailed. He's also more hands on, joining Michael on a field mission rather than staying at an undisclosed HQ. Later episodes demonstrate he's not the Nice Guy he tries to portray himself as, though.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Jesse (the agent who gets burned as a result of Michael's actions) is only glimpsed at, but he goes to become a major character starting in the next episode.
  • Enemy Mine: Vaughn argues that Michael is also threatened by the man who threatens them.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Gregory Hart is calmly having a drink when Michael and Vaughn get the drop on him. He reveals he already knows his employer wants him dead for being found. As the unmanned drone barrels down on their location, Michael and Vaughn book it, but Gregory simply sits there and waits to get shot.
  • He Knows Too Much: Gregory Hart's mysterious employer has him killed and the hideout bombed. Hart doesn't actually know the name of his employer, but what information he did know and the documents he had on-hand would've made it easier for any investigator to find out.
  • Hope Spot: The group's blackmail successfully convinces Big Ed to spare Winston and order Hunter to back off. Too bad Hunter is so crazed and vengeful that he won't take no for an answer.
  • I'll Kill You!: Hunter's threat towards Winston. As a high-ranking member of the gang, he secured a green light, meaning every Breaker is gunning for Winston. The plan to save Winston is to go above Hunter by getting Big Ed to call it off.
  • I Owe You My Life: Left unsaid and the blackmail likely still had some sway, but the fact that Team Westen saved his life from a vengeful Hunter and Winston himself helped keep pressure on his bleeding wound likely went a long way in convincing Big Ed to not just call off the hit, but make Winston a new member of the biker gang once he's back among his loyal men.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Michael questions why the Organization needs his help, pointing out they have far more resources than he does.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Vaughn concedes to Michael that the Organization's methods can be harsh, but he argues that they're still preferable to the mystery villain that was content to let Simon run free and endanger countless people in Miami.
  • Manly Tears: Michael confesses to his mother that he's terrified maybe Simon was right, that in time he'll be just like him.
  • Mood Whiplash: It looks like Michael's reunion with Fiona will be tender moment, only for her to be in a rush to leave, as she and Sam have a case on their hands.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Michael reflects on Simon's warning about ending up just like him, and he's left deeply troubled by it.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Michael has a minor one when he sees Hunter roll up to talk to Big Ed with his personal goons in tow despite Ed telling Hunter to come alone. In his narration, he notes negotiations never go well when the sides can't even agree on who comes to the table, and sure enough Hunter isn't in the mood to play nice.
    • Michael successfully retrieves some secure information... at the cost of getting someone burned.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Hunter is so desperate to make Winston pay for interfering in his business that he turns on Big Ed and tries to take over the whole organization. This ends like you'd expect once Big Ed is back among his loyal mooks.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: Winston offers Hunter all his money just to get him to back off. Hunter sets fire to the cash, demonstrating that his pride counts for way more.
  • The Starscream: Hunter's not happy with Big Ed's leadership, so he decides to take over when Ed calls off the hit on Winston.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Fiona and Sam argue about why the current case has gone sideways, much to the increasing irritation of a confused Michael.
Michael: GUYS! GUYS! I have a loaded machine pistol IN MY HAND, AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING!
  • Undying Loyalty: Big Ed expresses certainty that the rest of the Breakers would side with him over Hunter. As he says, though, the problem is that they're not there at the moment. So Fi gets the gang riled up and chasing after her so she can bring them right to him.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Gregory Hart is unconcerned about Michael and Vaughn catching up to and interrogating him. Not only does he have no real information to give them about his mysterious employer, but he knows he was marked for death the second he was being pursued. He is quickly killed by an unmanned drone.
