Recap / Brooklyn Nine Nine S 4 E 21 The Bank Job

Go To

The Bank Job is the twenty-first episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's fourth season. It aired back-to-back with "Crime And Punishment".

Upon Jake discovering Lieutenant Melanie Hawkins' corruption, he and Rosa enlist Holt's help to take her down. All of their attempts at prying into the Slaughterhouse's denizens are rebuffed, however, and they realize that they need to do something more dramatic to prove themselves. Cue the one and only Adrian Pimento, who is only all too happy to debase himself to help the Nine-Nine out. Unfortunately, Hawkins turns out to be much cannier than anyone expected.

Also, Gina has been acting stranger than normal, concerning Terry, Amy, and Charles. The three begin following Gina around and accidentally stumble upon a bombshell discovery about their coworker.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Ass Kicks You: During the bank robbery Rosa hip checks a glass door and manages to break it with her butt. This was completely unplanned.
  • Bank Robbery: Hawkins's team plan on robbing a bank.
  • Black Sheep: The handsome and athletic Milton Boyle is considered to be such an outsider amongst the Boyle Cousins that Charles treats the guy with open contempt. The rest of the Nine-Nine don't get what's wrong with the guy.
  • Call-Back: Pimento mentions his P.I job isn't doing so well.
  • The Cavalry: It looks like the Nine-Nine are going to be this for Jake and Rosa. They weren't.
  • Cliffhanger: Jake and Rosa get arrested as Jake yells out they're innocent.
  • The Crime Job: The episode is called "The Bank Job".
  • Cut Apart: The final act intercuts between the bank heist and the Nine-Nine racing to the bank. Then the Nine-Nine arrives at the wrong bank while Hawkins' team stop the robbery and take Jake and Rosa as suspects.
  • Dirty Cop: Hawkins and her team. Jake and Rosa pretend to be dirty to try and earn their trust.
  • Dodgy Toupee: Hitchcock got one to try and sneak back into Wing Sluts after being banned for using too much sauce. It hasn't worked so far.
  • Frame-Up: Hawkins frames Jake and Rosa.
  • The Infiltration: Jake and Rosa try to infiltrate Hawkins's team. They fail.
  • Intoxication Ensues: Pimento tries to teach Jake and Rosa how to fake snorting cocaine, but he ends up taking three big doses "by accident". He's totally wired for the rest of the episode.
  • Irrational Hatred: For reasons that elude Terry and Amy, Charles can't stand Milton, his cousin and the father of Gina's baby, despite him being basically a seemingly nicer Spear Counterpart of Gina, who Charles loves.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jake and Rosa pretend to have one after beating Pimento in a room with a security camera in an attempt to show that they're dirty cops.
    • Rosa has one when she realizes she and Jake are being framed.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Parodied. Boyle states that if anything happens to Jake he'd never forgive himself since his last words to him were "No, you're the man". When Terry says that sounds pretty nice, Boyle says nice isn't good enough.
  • Stimulant Speedtalk: Invoked and played straight. Jake and Rosa plan to give corrupt cop Melanie Hawkins real coke, hoping she'll get sloppy and give something away when under the influence so they can catch her. When Adrian Pimento accidentally snorts coke three times attempting to demonstrate how to fake-snort coke, he gets so high he takes off his shirt and starts talking nonstop.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Gina and Milton both independently came up with "The Enigma" as a name for their baby if it's a girl. If it's a boy, "The Enigmo".
  • Tangled Family Tree: The Boyle Family Tree is somewhat complicated with Charles and Gina having slept together before becoming step-siblings and Gina subsequently entering into a relationship with Cousin Milton and expecting a baby with him.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Adrien Pimento clearly gets off on getting beaten and encourages Jake and Rosa to be as rough as possible (although he later stops them from going too far because he doesn't have insurance and can't afford to get too badly hurt). Jake is squicked while Rosa finds it attractive.
Pimento: OK! Here are the ground rules: you can punch me, kick me, pull my hair. I am A-OK being stabbed. Biting and scratching are on the table. You can use fire!
Jake: These are the ground rules? Is there anything off limits?
Pimento: Damn, man! You got something real sick you wanna do, huh? Oh, you little pervert...alright! I like it! Don't tell me. Surprise me! Ooh! This is gonna be fun!
    • Later, though, Pimento begs Jake to stop because he has no health insurance and getting too badly hurt might end up costing him a fortune.
  • Wham Episode: Gina announces her pregnancy and Jake and Rosa are arrested unfairly.
  • Wham Line: "Where's Captain Holt?"
  • Wham Shot: The cops who arrived at the robbery weren't the Nine-Nine, and the Nine-Nine got led to a different bank.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Among Gina's list of baby names are the following: Volcano, Tibia, JerHonor, Concretius, and The Enigma.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Pimento is willing to kill a kid if the kid's a dick.
  • You Make Me Sick: As Jake and Rosa get taken away by cops, Hawkins says "Dirty cops make me sick."
