Recap / Attack On Titan S 2 E 3 Southwestward

Go To

Humanity continues its counterattack against the Titans but many veteran soldiers feel uneasy about their presence. The Cadets and their superiors meet up trying to locate the breach and decide to spend the night in a rundown castle. However their peaceful night is about to be interrupted...

Tropes:

  • Almighty Janitor: Krista firmly believes that Ymir should have been a member of the top 10 in the Cadets and that the only reason she got as far as she did is because Ymir intentionally slacked off in training so that she would have the opportunity to be in the Military Police. Ymir denies that she did any such thing for Krista but Krista clearly doesn't buy it.
  • Beyond the Impossible: It's an established fact that Titans become very sluggish or unresponsive at night so The Reveal at the end of the episode that an entire horde of Titans, led by the Beast Titan, can still move and attack the ruins of Castle Utgard in the middle of the night is completely unexpected to the Survey Corps.
  • Call-Back: Hange reacts in shock when Mikasa mentions that Krista always hangs around with Ymir, referencing the Talking Titan that Ilse Langnar wrote down in her notebook.
  • Death Glare: Ymir is shown giving Reiner a crazy one for some reason that hasn't been revealed as of yet.
  • MacGuffin-Person Reveal: It's revealed that the Order of the Walls were ordered to monitor a member of the 104th Cadet Corps for some time now and that they may have information regarding the secret of the walls. That person? Krista.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Pastor Nick can only look on in shock at the various refuges that are being evacuated in Ehrmich District clearly not fully comprehending the terror that those who face Titans beyond the Wall have to content with. It's enough to shake his resolve enough to give the Survey Corps some pressing information: the identity of someone within the 104th Cadet Corps that his Order was told to monitor; Krista.
  • Oh, Crap!: While all of the people that are in Castle Utgard are freaked out that Titans can still move at night, Reiner and Bertolt are noticeable shocked at the presence of the Beast Titan.
  • Primal Fear: The fear of the dark becomes extra terrifying in this episode as there is a long stretch wherein various members of Mike's Squad are forced to travel across the perimeter of the Wall, desperately searching for the breach, in complete pitch black with nothing but the light of their torches. As Gelgar notes at any moment they could run into a horde of Titans and never realize it until it's to late.
