The Movie of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, released in 2007. It is the first movie based on an [adult swim] series (and, if one wants to get technical, the second theatrical movie based on a Cartoon Network series, after 2002's The Powerpuff Girls Movie, as well as the last theatrically-released CN movie until Teen Titans Go! To the Movies in 2018).
The movie sees Master Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad fighting off an ancient exercise machine known as The Insanoflex, as well as delving into the origins of the titular squad. Lots of weird stuff happens in-between.
Don't talk, trope!:
- All for Nothing Walter Melon's plan to inherit both the Aqua Teens' house and Dr. Weird's laboratory to build the Insano Gym over them ends up being this once Frylock and Dr. Weird reveal that they both rent. Furthermore, Frylock points out that Walter couldn't build his gym in a residential neighborhood because of zoning laws.
- Animation Bump: Averted for most of the movie, but the fight between Frylock and Dr. Weird at the end plays it straight. The promotional material spoofed this by advertising "three all new backgrounds."
- Art Shift: The opening credits are animated in sketchy hand-drawn animation.
- Big Bad: Dr. Weird, unlike his TV self.
- Big Damn Movie: For a late-night cartoon with a 15-minute run time.
- *Bleep*-dammit!: A weird case where the film's f-bombs are both uncensored and use bleep sounds. One noticeable example is when Carl tries out the Insanoflex. You can clearly hear him say "fuck", followed by a slightly delayed bleep.
- The Cameo:
- Space Ghost makes a brief appearance.
- Willie Nelson, Balloonenstein, and BillyWitchDoctor.com make blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameos in the background.
- Cameo (the band) as themselves.
- Mastodon as the threatening theater-rules enforcers in the beginning.
- Chekhov's Skill: "I AM A MASTER OF DISGUISE!"
- Colon Cancer: The colon is actually spelled out. The movie's soundtrack album adds "Colon the Soundtrack" to the end.
- Death by Cameo: Space Ghost appears only to get blown up by a missile.
- Death by Origin Story: Chicken Bittle was created alongside the Aqua Teens, but dies during Frylock's flashback.
- Disney Death: Shake out of nowhere shoots Meatwad dead. He's revived by Neil Peart using the Drum Solo of Life.
- Disproportionate Retribution: The opening song threatens to do horrific things like sneaking into your house and tearing your wife in half for offenses like kicking the seat in front of you or video taping the film.
- Dreadful Musician: Master Shake's performance of "Nude Love" is bad enough to drive the Insanoflex to kill itself.
- Driven to Suicide:
- The Insanoflex destroys itself after listening to Shake perform "Nude Love".
- Shake jumps out the window at the end of the movie.
- Fake-Out Opening: The movie starts with a "No Talking or Phones" Warning that's cute initially, but descends into a metal song where talking food warn you that they'll "cut you with a linoleum knife" if you make out in the theater.
- Format-Specific Joke: The movie begins with a parody of theater promos about the refreshment stall and theater etiquette.
- Gainax Ending: After Frylock defeats Dr. Weird, whom the Aqua Teens believe to be their creator, Weird claims it was Frylock who created him. Then the Mooninites show up claiming they created all of them, followed by Walter Melon saying he created them and the Insanoflex, and planned for Weird and Frylock to kill each other so he could inherit their real estate and build an Insano-Gym franchise. Then a 9-layer bean burrito appears claiming to be their mother. Shake, clearly having had enough of this nonsense, proceeds to jump out the window. Then along come the snacks from the opening who close out the movie by insulting the viewer through song. The end.
- I Warned You: Averted.Cybernetic Ghost: I told you [the missing part] mustn't be installed!Frylock: No you didn't!Cybernetic Ghost: I didn't?Frylock: No, you didn't!Cybernetic Ghost: I meant to!
- Kudzu Plot: Parodied. The plot is extremely complicated, involving the revelation of how the Aqua Teens came into being, the fate of Chicken Bittle, what the hell Dr. Weird's deal is, the secret conspiracy of the Insanoflex, and whether Frylock is a lesbian in a man's body in the body of a box of fries, but by the end, none of the characters care anymore.
- Logo Joke: The First Look Pictures and Williams Street logos appear with ominous sounding music, both Fade Out. A few seconds later the same music and background Fade In with "Presents" written in the middle, then fades out as well. A few seconds later the same thing happens with "This Movie" written on it, which gets yanked off after a split second.
- Made of Iron:
- Carl survives having nearly every muscle in his body removed with a large hunting knife.
- Dr. Weird survives shotgun-style blasts to the chest from Frylock and being literally cut in half a short time later. He seemed rather nonchalant about the whole affair.
- Master of Disguise: The Plutonians and the Cybernetic Ghost disguise themselves as the Aqua Teens to try and find the missing part of the Insanoflex. Dr. Weird also pulls it off a few times.
- Mind Screw: The entire film, to the point it looks
Intentional - My God, What Have I Done?: It's brief, but Shake seems genuinely aghast that he killed Meatwad.
- Mythology Gag: The opening of the film is exactly what happens during the show's end credits (the Aqua Teens being ancient Egyptian dieties, being blasted to the moon by Abraham Lincoln, and being found by an astronaut).
- "No Talking or Phones" Warning: The beginning of the movie culminates in a heavy metal song performed by Mastodon strongly urging theater-goers not to talk during the film.
- Origins Episode: Played with. The movie begins with Shake telling Meatwad that they escaped from the pyramids of Egypt with the help of Time Lincoln, but as Frylock points out, "none of that shit ever happened and you know it!". Later, Frylock gives the real origin story that they were created by Dr. Weird to fly into a brick wall. But by the end of the movie there's so many conflicting accounts as to who truly created who that it's difficult to tell if any of it was real.
- Persecution Flip: As a result of Time Lincoln's murder, the black slaves take over the plantation and start whipping the white CIA agents.
- Point of Divergence: The CIA shooting Time Lincoln results in the slaves taking over the plantation.
- The Power of Rock: Neil Peart's Drum Solo of Life.
- Product Placement: Parodied when Time Lincoln suggests they escape with the new Beetle convertible.
- Psycho Rangers: Oglethrope, Emory and The Cybernetic Ghost become this to the Aqua Teens, with Oglethrope being the ditzy, egotistical one, Emory being the rational and more tech-savvy one, and The Cybernetic Ghost being the Cloud Cuckoo Lander that barely keeps track of what he's saying let alone what's happening. It gets further highlighted by a scene where they disguise themselves as the Aqua Teens while looking for the Motherboard to the Insanoflex, and they assume their respective counterparts' roles near-flawlessly.
- Random Events Plot: And how! The movie swings from one nonsensical plot point to the next as breakneck speed. At times, it seems to be actively trying not to make sense.
- The Reveal: Frylock is a lesbian trapped in a man's body as a box of fries.
- Rewatch Bonus: All the hints in the series about Frylock being a lesbian trapped in a man's body as a box of fries become much more noticeable after watching the movie.
- Sdrawkcab Speech: The "ancient Egyptian" language that the characters speak at the beginning is just English played backwards.
- Shout-Out:
- "It's A Groovy Time For a Movie Time" spoofs the classic movie theater bumper "Let's All Go To The Lobby."
- 12 oz. Mouse is playing on Space Ghost's TV, Also a small clip of a another Adult Swim show Perfect Hair Foreverfrom the episode "Tusk", is playing on the Aqua Teens' television when Meatwad has Master Shake's broken teeth.
- Skewed Priorities: With the exception of Frylock, almost nobody has their priorities in order. In particular, after the looming threat of the mini-Insanoflexes becomes apparent, all Master Shake cares about is getting laid.
- The Stinger: The Cybernetic Ghost humps the Aqua Teen's couch, followed by Frylock, now fully a woman, telling him to come to bed.
- Stoner Flick: It's a movie based on one of the most trippy Adult Swim originals best watched when you're high.
- Surreal Humor: Just like the original show.
- Time Travel: Employed by Time Lincoln. Later in the movie, the heroes travel back in time to Oglethorpe's college years to stop him from creating the Insanoflex. It doesn't work, mainly because he didn't actually create it.
- Title: The Adaptation: Parodied as Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters.
- Trailer Spoof: The film's trailer goes so far as to identify itself as Spider-Man 2 in the text crawl while the narrator reads the correct name.
- Transformation Discretion Shot: Meatwad normally keeps his transformations on camera as he did in the animated series. However, when Shake chastises him for not being tall enough to ride the roller-coaster, Meatwad responds by shaping himself into an office building, with nobody realizing until we cut away from Shake.
- Translation Convention: Parodied. The film opens with the Aqua Teens speaking what's supposed to sound like ancient Egyptian with subtitles (they're actually speaking English with the audio played backwards) before Meatwad, in plain English, asks if they can just talk normally.
- Unreliable Narrator: Frylock is incredulous about Master Shake's account of the team's origins."None of that shit ever happened and you know it!"
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: Meatwad reveals he can shapeshift into a large building as well as an igloo and hot dog. He just never did because no one asked.
- Vomit Indiscretion Shot:
- Ignignokt pukes computer chips from riding the rollercoaster too much and when Err tricks him into tasting mayonnaise from a dumpster.
- Carl throws up the liquified food Linda ( Really a disguised Dr. Weird) serves him when she points out it's "Apple Cinnamon Flavored Monkey Glands"
- Waxing Lyrical: "I can feel it coming in the air tonight... I've been waiting for this moment all my life."
- Wipe: Lampshaded. "Staaaaaaaaaaarrrr....wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiipe..."
- Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: After it looks as though the Insanoflex has been defeated, there are hundreds of "eggs" housing smaller Insanoflexes that are set to hatch any minute.
