Recap / Almost Human S1 E9 "Unbound"

Go To

There are consequences and casualties when Danica, an XRN that operates more like a soldier than a cop, is rebuilt and on a rampage. With few clues about her mission and location, and with innocent lives being lost, Kennex and Dorian look to Nigel, a genius roboticist and DRN creator, in an attempt to track her down.

Provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Attack Its Weak Point: Danica can be disabled if John manages to stab her in the back of the neck with a syringe. Except it doesn't work, because Nigel was behind Danica's rampage all along.
  • Be All My Sins Remembered: Nigel is fully aware of the consequence of his actions and carries them out, even after reuniting with Dorian.
  • Conspicuously Public Assassination: Danica walks into a bar to assassinate a politician.
  • Class Trip: The episode begins with this.
  • Cyber Cyclops: The service robot that rescued Danica is one, another shows up at the end of the episode.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: With the grenades on her vest armed by John, Danica is kicked into an elevator and destroyed.
  • Fembot: Danica.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: During the fight, Danica kicks Dorian into a pillar, he is impaled by a rebar.
  • Killer Robot: Danica operates like this.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: When the XRN broke out of the evidence building, the precinct is a buzz about it, no one bothers to really explain the urgency to Dorian, thus leaving him confused and without accessible records of the XRNs.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Nigel claims that Dorian and Danica are no different from one another in terms of operation. However, Nigel states when he built Dorian he was full of life and hope while with Danica he was full of resentment and desperation.
  • Losing Your Head: Danica goes through a couple of bodies in the episode, first using the service robot that rescued her, then switching to a more feminine body later.
  • My Greatest Failure: Nigel states that Danica was the greatest mistake of his career. He depends on Dorian and John to stop her.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: The exchange between Danica and Dorian as both are holding guns.
Dorian: Why are you doing this?
Danica: Because... my sacrifice is necessary, just like yours.
    Dorian: We're nothing alike.
  • Smart People Build Robots: Doctor Nigel, who created the synthetic soul program along with Dorian and apparently didn't stop there.
  • The End... Or Is It?: Nigel disappears from the precinct during the fray and is seen on the street entering a van with another robot. He is last seen going over 'the wall' with a case of processors and synthetic souls, enough to make 500 androids.
  • Tracking Device: One was constructed by Nigel and Rudy in order to locate Danica, it worked due to being based on her unique signature.
