Finn unearths a treasure with a terrible price at the top of Dead Mountain.

  • Blessed with Suck: The eyes turn those who stare at them into what the bearer sees them as. Jake, for example, gets turned into a teenager with a varsity jacket because Finn sees him as a Big Brother Mentor. Finn, however, is worried that he's transforming his friends into things they don't like to be, and when he turns NEPTR back into a microwave, he has a Heroic BSoD and retreats to the hermit's yurt. Jake reminds him that because he's a good person, he only turns people into good things, and that if he were a bad person, the eyes would turn people into "rats and plops".
  • Brick Joke: The eyes turn BMO into an angel and he flies away. When everyone is back to normal in the end, BMO falls from the sky and lands on NEPTR's pie.
  • Creative Sterility: Finn isn't very imaginative... at least, that's what his friends tell him to cheer him up and return him to normal.
  • Eye Scream: The eyes escaping from Finn's head.
  • Height Angst: Finn plans to use the treasure to wish himself about eleven inches taller - about as tall as Princess Bubblegum.
  • I Am a Monster: Finn says this after he turns NEPTR into a lifeless microwave. He is looking at his reflection in NEPTR's window at the time, and the eyes turn him into a literal monster.
  • Literal-Minded: How the others are transformed: Finn calls Jake a great big brother and he turns into a stereotypical Cool Big Bro / Big Man on Campus; he calls BMO "my little angel" and he transforms into a little human boy with wings. When he's trying to convince himself he's a hero he turns into a few rather bland-looking heroic figures.
  • Magical Eyes: They turn those who stare at them into what the one who has them sees them as.
  • Mundane Utility: At first it seems that Princess Bubblegum just wants Finn and Jake to help her choose an outfit; actually she wants them to make sure Ice Kind doesn't ruin her speech, which is still a fairly mundane task for them.
  • No Eye in Magic: Upon learning that the hermit guarding the treasure will hurt you if you look into his eyes, Finn and Jake come armed with mirrors to avoid the hermit's gaze, adding that those with similar powers should rethink their strategy.
    • Later, when the hermit's eyes are transferred to Finn, he wears shades to avoid turning his friends when they gaze at him.
  • One of the Boys: Apparently how Finn sees Princess Bubblegum as she turns into a "tomboy" (her voice stays the same though she decides to wear a "teen heartthrob" outfit for her speech) in very casual clothes.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man : Princess Bubblegum is seen choosing between two suits, one pink and one blue. This is the second time she's worn business attire (of the big-shouldered 1980s/1990s type) after "Thin Yellow Line".
  • Shout-Out: Angel-BMO wouldn't look out of place in EarthBound (1994); Monster-Finn looks like a red Swamp Thing / Man-Thing. The title-card is a reference to optical illusion paintings, particularly one of a skull.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: NEPTR, usually one of the show's biggest Butt Monkeys, who spends much of this episode as an inanimate microwave, gets hailed as a hero after he turns the magic eyes into a pie and breaks the spell.
  • Visual Pun: Finn notes there's a big warning about Dead Mountain in the book he's reading and shows it to Jake: it's the words "BIG WARNING ABOUT DEAD MOUNTAIN" in giant red letters that fill both pages.
  • Was Once a Man: The hermit's yurt is full of rats. Later, as Jake talks to Finn about him being a good person, he comments that if he were a bad person, he would be turning people into "rats and plops". As he says that, a rat walks into view and farts, implying that the rats were the hermit's victims.
    • Jake is shocked that Finn sees Ice King as Simon; unfortunately the eyes only fix his appearance, not his mind.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Finn is horrified that he apparently views NEPTR as just a microwave when he considers him to be his son.
