Kissing someone you liked as the way of saying "I like you" used to be, like, the way you did it. A lot of the people who read this manga are adults, people my age who have this same experience with media. In movies the girl kisses the guy to say she wants him. That's how that's done.
You're not wrong that that's problematic and it is indeed a good thing that we've largely stopped doing that. But it goes back to my comment about ignoring context. (...) This story is taking place in the 1500's.
