Go To

Basic Trope: A character who thinks about and/or brings up food often.

  • Straight: Bob has a tendency to think about food, even at inappropriate times.
  • Exaggerated: There are no scenes in which Bob is not thinking about eating, or acquiring something to eat.
  • Downplayed: Food is Bob's primary interest, but he can discuss other subjects and perform tasks without interruption for snacks.
  • Justified:
    • Bob has an eating disorder.
    • Or is a Big Eater.
    • Or is starving.
  • Inverted: Bob never thinks or talks about food, even when it would be appropriate.
  • Subverted: Bob stops thinking about food when he comes under attack.
  • Double Subverted: But the longer the combat takes, the more his mind drifts back to getting his next meal.
  • Parodied: Bob sees everyone around him in terms of how good a meal they'd make.
  • Zig Zagged: Sometimes Bob fixates on food, other times he doesn't.
  • Averted: Bob doesn't think about food all the time.
  • Enforced: Bob is a character in an advertisement for an all-you-can-eat buffet.
  • Lampshaded: "Can't you think about anything but food!?"
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz zaps Bob with a Hunger Ray.
  • Exploited: Knowing that Bob thinks only of food, Emperor Evulz bribes him with a huge feast.
  • Defied: Bob gets counseling and works on breaking his obsession with food.
  • Discussed:
Bob: I can't talk, Alice. I'm making my shopping list.
Alice: Looks pretty long. Are you sure you can eat all that?
    Bob: Chances are, I can.
  • Conversed: "I hate Bob. He's such a liability, eating everything without much thought for his friends."
  • Implied: When Charlie suggests to Alice that they invite Bob for dinner, she says, "Oh, hell no! I am not sharing again!"
  • Deconstructed:
    • Bob's obsession stems from having a particularly fast metabolism, and prolonged bouts of hunger can prove rather painful for him. He eats as much food as he can when the chance arises and sometimes becomes volatile when he's extremely hungry because of the pain and from the frustration of either eating most of the food in the house to satisfy his appetite or to suffer so that his roommate Alice has enough food for herself.
    • Bob gains a lot of weight and starts having health problems. He would like to lose weight, but can't bring himself to eat less.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Bob gets treatment for his medical issue that resolves it but still leaves him with an above-average appetite.
    • Bob does a lot of intense exercise, and keeps fit that way instead of restricting his eating habits.
  • Played for Laughs: Bob thinks about food at the most inappropriate time.
  • Played for Drama: Bob is murdered by poisoned food the killer knew he wouldn't be able to resist.
