Basic Trope: A character is overcome with jealousy over another.

  • Straight: Flynn becomes consumed with envy towards Alex for getting better grades than him.
  • Exaggerated: Flynn loathes Alex for being smart, handsome, and popular, and is obsessed with "dethroning him" to the point that it eclipses all else.
  • Downplayed: Flynn is annoyed that Alex got the "Student of the Month" award for saving the school from being burned down at the last minute, believing he should have gotten the award because he was trying for it all month. When everyone tells him Alex was a serious contender even before the fire incident, and that it's not even the point of the award, he brushes them off, saying Alex has terrible character.
  • Justified:
    • Flynn has self-esteem issues, perceiving Alex as essentially being a better version of him doesn't help.
    • Flynn and Alex are enemies.
    • Alex wronged Flynn in the past, intentionally or not.
  • Inverted: Flynn adores Alex for getting better grades than him.
  • Subverted: It seems as though Flynn is resentful towards Alex for getting better grades than him, but then it turns out Alex has issues with his character.
  • Double Subverted: But it turns out that Alex doesn't have the issues that Flynn accused him, it was simply something Flynn made up to justify his jealousy and poor attitude towards Alex.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: Flynn hates Alex for being smart and athletic. But then it turns out that he has issues with Alex's character, except that's just something he makes himself believe because he doesn't want to admit he's jealous of Alex. THEN it turns out that it all stems from a childhood incident where Alex acted poorly which rooted Flynn's mind in thinking he doesn't deserve it... then it turns out that said childhood incident was actually not as black and white as Flynn's recollection painted it.
  • Averted: Alex is The Ace in every sense, but nobody holds it against him. In fact, everyone is inspired to be more like Alex.
  • Enforced: "We'll need to create a flaw for Flynn. We'll have him envy Alex for being better than him."
  • Lampshaded: "And there's Mr. Greeneyes himself, Flynn!"
  • Invoked:
    • Daniel talks on and on about how great Alex is to ignite Flynn's green-eyed monster self because he finds it amusing to watch.
    • Flynn has pictures of Alex's accomplishments in his room to fuel his hatred.
    • Alex is smug and arrogant towards Flynn and makes him jealous of his delight.
  • Exploited: Flynn's dad encourages Flynn's jealousy, hoping it will help Flynn be more motivated to get better grades.
  • Defied: Flynn growls as he hears of Alex's accomplishments, but Charlotte drags him aside and tells him to get a hold of himself, scolding him for being so childish.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "In stories like this there's always a rival jealous of the hero's achievements."
  • Implied: After Alex gets another "A" on his test, there's a shot of Flynn giving him a resentful look while holding his own test, which got a "B" grade.
  • Deconstructed: Flynn's jealousy of Alex negatively affects his life as well as his very future. He begins to fail in his classes, alienates the other students, even his own friends, and gets in trouble with the school staff in which this gets him expelled. As he reaches adulthood, Flynn becomes a Jaded Washout who not only envies, but also hates other people who are more accomplished than him; Especially Alex, who he blames for the bad things that have happened to him. When one person calls him out on his enviousness, Flynn beats them to death in response, and ends up in prison.
  • Played For Laughs: Flynn is jealous of Alex for incredibly petty reasons, such as him being able to have his popcorn last the entire movie instead of eating it all during the previews.
  • Played For Drama: Flynn is jealous of Alex and crosses the Moral Event Horizon by murdering him.
