Playing With / Depraved Kids' Show Host

Go To

Basic Trope: The host of a children's show is a bad person, completely deranged, has substance abuse problems, or is otherwise not fit for their occupation because of a serious character flaw.

  • Straight: Uncle Bob is a pill-popping alcoholic who makes harsh threats toward his coworkers while his show is on the air and mistreats the child actors behind the scenes.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • Uncle Bob has a minor drinking problem, a very short fuse off the air, and acts very rude to his child actors.
    • Uncle Bob is not evil, but stopped hiding his flaws. After he saw the hosts of edgier shows get belittled by being negatively contrasted with himself, he decided to drop his Incorruptible Pure Pureness facade and tell the world that it's ok to have flaws. He does not abuse others or commit any crimes, but he added the occasional hidden edgy joke and wrote skits that occasionally portrayed himself as in the wrong.
  • Justified:
    • The stress of running a show where he has to be family-friendly at all times has caused Uncle Bob to snap.
    • Uncle Bob is a Child Hater and he has no problem making his hatred of his job known.
    • Uncle Bob is using his job to lure children into his meat grinder.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Uncle Bob is suspected of being a child molester, but it turns out to be nothing but a slanderous rumor.
  • Double Subverted: While Uncle Bob doesn't molest children, he is abusive to his own children.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: Uncle Bob is alleged to be involved in a sex scandal. The sex scandal turns out to be a slanderous rumor. After that, rumors spread that he's addicted to narcotics. Uncle Bob claims this is a lie, but it's later revealed he actually does partake in narcotics. But only as prescribed by a doctor. Who is a Dr. Feelgood.
  • Averted:
    • All children's show hosts are shown as relatively normal and innocent people.
    • There are no children's show hosts in the work.
    • Due to his drug problem and pornographic career, Bob never made content for children.
  • Enforced: "Let's have one of the villains be a kids' show host who isn't right in the head. It's a famously disturbing character concept and would allow for a good deal of dark content for our series."
  • Lampshaded: Adults make remarks that Uncle Bob's show isn't suitable for children and that the network executives would pull the plug on his show if they had common sense.
  • Invoked: Uncle Bob lets his personal issues trouble him to the point that he no longer cares about hosting his show appropriately.
  • Defied:
    • Uncle Bob refuses to partake in activities that would tarnish his reputation as a popular kids' show host and takes therapy sessions so he doesn't go crazy.
    • Uncle Bob turns down the job of hosting a kids' show because he doesn't want kids to turn out like him.
  • Discussed: "Isn't it weird how some villains used to be children's entertainers?"
  • Conversed: "If I had a job like that, I'd probably snap, too."
  • Implied: A child's parents forbid their kid from watching the show, stating that Uncle Bob is a bad role model.
  • Deconstructed: Uncle Bob's depraved actions result in him getting arrested and his show pulled off the air for good.
  • Reconstructed: After Uncle Bob is arrested, the network simply decides to replace him with a more honest person than to cancel the show, this time doing a thorough background check to make sure the new host won't cause any problems.
  • Played For Laughs: Uncle Bob calls the children watching his show "brats" and quickly corrects himself after realizing his slip-up.
  • Played For Drama:
    • Uncle Bob's audience view him as a Broken Pedestal because of his dishonest actions and everyone he runs into refuse to forgive him for what he's done even though he really does want to change his ways.
    • Uncle Bob's show puts him in close proximity to his potential victims.
