Playing With: Cross-Dressing Voices
Basic Trope: A character has a voice actor of the opposite gender.
  • Straight:
    • Bob (a prepubescent boy) is voiced by a woman.
    • Alice (a grown woman) is voiced by a man.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob is supposed to be 28 years old (well past puberty)... and he's still voiced by a woman! note
    • Alice, a 10-year old girl has a very low baritone or bass voice.
  • Downplayed: Alex, a character of indeterminate gender and age, is voiced by a women in her thirties.
  • Justified:
    • Bob is three-years-old.
    • Alice smokes daily, causing her voice to sound deep and gravely.
    • The cast is full of transsexuals.
    • Bob is often mocked in the book version for his girlish soprano; casting a woman to play him in the cartoon just made sense.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob is voiced by a 10-year-old boy like he himself is.
    • Alice is voiced by a woman.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob is at first voiced by a woman, but he suddenly gets a male voice.
    • Bob is hiding the fact that "he" is also a woman, but her voice blows her cover to the audience.
  • Double Subverted: And then his voice returns to the original one.
  • Parodied: Bob is regularly mistaken for being female due to his voice actress, no matter how manly he tries to act.
  • Zig Zagged: Sometimes Bob is voiced by a woman, other times he's voiced by a boy.
  • Averted: All characters are voiced by members of their own gender.
  • Enforced:
    • The people in charge of hiring voice actors couldn't get any decent child actors for their characters (or they do have child actors, but most of them have gone through puberty and can't do the high, kiddie voices anymore), so they got some adult men (or women) to do voices of kids.
    • Or, the voice actors they hired are really good at voicing both sexes, whether or not they're children.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
