  • Just the idea that men would kill their wives and replace them with lifelike robot replicas, and for no other reason than that they didn't like that their wives were autonomous human beings with their own personalities, thoughts, and feelings.
    • During the climax, when Joanna despairingly asks why they'd do something like this, Coba, the Big Bad just responds "Because we can!"
  • When Joanna confronts Bobbie at her house, she becomes increasingly upset that she is refusing to communicate with her properly, and is acting way too differently than how she was before (for example, suddenly not knowing what "archaic" means). Eventually, Joanna grabs a knife and cuts her fingers, arguing that she can bleed... but then asks if Bobbie can. She then proceeds to stab her.note  Bobbie doesn't.
    "Bobbie": (annoyed) Joanna... (removes knife)
    • It gets worse: she proceeds to berate Joanna... except, as the scene goes on, she begins repeating herself more and more, dropping mugs and spilling coffee powder, and spinning around the room like a broken robot... And all Joanna can do is leave the kitchen, horrified.
      "Bobbie": (grabs mug) How could you do a thing like that? (drops mug; grabs new mug) How could you do a thing like that? (drops mug; grabs mug) How could you do a thing like that? (drops mug; grabs spoonful of coffee powder) When I was just going to give you coffee. (spills powder; grabs more powder) When I was just going to give you coffee. (spills powder; grabs more powder) When I was just going to give you coffee. (spills powder) I thought we were friends. I thought we were friends. I was just going to give you coffee. (opens and shuts refrigerator) I was just going to give you coffee. I thought we were friends. (opens and shuts refrigerator) I thought we were friends. I thought we were friends. (opens and shuts cabinet) How could you do a thing like that? (turns and looks into camera) I thought we were friends.
    • This is parodied in the remake, when Joanna is outright horrified to walk into Bobbie's now spotless kitchen, a complete 180° from the mess it's been before. Without even seeing Bobbie yet, Joanna realizes that she's fallen victim to the Stepford phenomenon too.
  • While sneaking in to the Men's Association to find her children, Joanna follows the sound of her daughter calling for her, only to find it's just a recording of the girls voice playing in Coba's office. When and where exactly did Coba record her calling for her mother?
  • The eyes on Joanna's unfinished robot double, which you can see on this page.
    • Even worse with the smile.
    • There's something disturbing about the way the camera pans over the doubles larger breasts, like it emphasizes the monstrous, shallow pettiness behind it's creation even more. If you're already going to replace your intelligent, independent wife with a submissive robot, might as well spruce up other parts as well, right Walter?
    • The last we see of Joanna is her staring in horror as her robot double approaches her with a serene, empty smile, while clutching a nylon stocking in her hands, preparing to pull a Kill and Replace on her. It then cuts to the Stepford grocery store where "Joanna" is shopping, dressed exactly like the other Stepford wives, vacantly greeting the other wives as they wander among the store shelves. The credits show a smiling, unapologetic Walter picking her up in the family car.
