Alcatrazz: I deleted all the Shin Megami Tensei examples. Those games were all rated M or the equivalent.
At least you don't have a totally fucked-up copy of Fire Red. This Troper knows a guy who unlocked parts of the Johto and Hoenn regions, culminating in going to a creepy old island, fighting a possesed girl after defeating Lugia, finding a second SKELETON OF A MEW (he found the other one on the Sevii Islands), and finally getting teleported to an evil dimension where you have to fight all of your own legendaries— twice— within 500,000 steps (highest level Pkmn's levelx1000), or turn into a Pokemon and lose your save file (because apparently it happened to his cousin too). I wouldn't have believed him if it wasn't just so fucked up I couldn't believe any explanation other than content deliberately put in for anyone who messed up their cartridge. Diddgery: I've got another explanation: b.s. made up to impress your friends. I removed it, but if someone can somehow prove it (and I doubt that), then you can add that back. Erik: Most of this page is a load of crap. It doesn't qualify for Nightmare Fuel. It qualifies for "ten year olds might go yuck". I suggest massive pruning, starting with half the Pokemon list (creepy music? CREEPY MUSIC constitutes Nightmare Fuel now?) and the town of Tristram from Diablo II, which were the ones I glanced at before becoming disgusted. Oh me, oh my, a town was destroyed and some of the people in it are dead. My little sister played it when she was twelve and she laughed to see Wirt getting his comeuppeance. Freezair For A Limited Time: "Ten year olds might go X" IS the definition of Nightmare Fuel. Nightmare Fuel is the stuff that scared us when we were little kids, no matter whether it was supposed to be scary or not. Just because something doesn't scare YOU doesn't mean it's not valid Nightmare Fuel—everyone has their own frights, after all. Heck, I consider most survival horror games to be laughable at best—pretty much anything defined as "horror" is going to get laughter rather than fear from me, and possibly a "squick" if it descends into Gorn territory. And yet that friggin' Sliph Co. Tower music gave me the heebie-jeebies like nobody's business. Uberschveinen: Actually, there is a standard. Nightmare Fuel does not mean a kid goes 'eww' or 'ugh'or feels uneasy. What it means is that the thing in question is so unsettling that it actually provokes nightmares. There's maybe a quarter of the page that has actually been claimed to do so, the rest is just hyperbole. Freezair For A Limited Time: Again, "deeply unsettling" varies from person to person. Also, just because something doesn't literally give us nightmares doesn't mean it's not Nightmare Fuel—you can scare someone without ruining their REM cycles. Unless you want to seek down everyone who's contributed to this page and individually interrogate them about their exact psychological reactions to the things they've described on this page... Uberschveinen: That's just the thing. Half of these examples more or less say that 'no, this wasn't actually scary, I just didn't like it very much' or 'well it didn't scare me but it could have scared a theoretical third party'. Neither of these can be justified as Nightmare Fuel. If you're proposing something to fit here either you or a specific person needs to have been deeply upset by it. I can't find out what the case was with the examples that didn't specify results, but I can bump off any that actively say that they didn't find it that bad. You havw to admit, this examples page desperately needs pruning. Freezair For A Limited Time: I just read through the entire list, and I don't think half of them more or less say that. There is natter that can be excised, but unless we are going to enforce a strict "every example must be in This Troper format" policy, most of the entries strike me as legit. Again, unless we track down every last contributor and ask them for proof of lasting psychological trauma, I don't think we can get TOO prune-happy. Perhaps the Zelda and Pokemon sections should be shifted to their own pages, a la what happened in Crowning Moment Of Awesome? Charred Knight: I would add Final Fantasy to those needing its own page. Also this thing needs to categorized I can't find anything here. L Guardinal: Took out everything I knew that wasn't a children's game (or "innocent", like Smash Bros. and Zelda). Silent Hill? Resident Evil? We have Nightmare Fuel Unleaded for that, which I moved them to. Feel free to take things I missed out, I'm not familiar with all the games on the list. Fast Eddie: Well, this is now officially long enough to crash certain browsers when they try to save a change. What would we like to do?
Insanity Prelude: Okay, that Okami example? The Water Dragon? Officially Nightmare Fuel, in that at least one troper can now say she dreamed about it. I haven't even played the damn level. D: Insanity Prelude: ... and now the above example is gone. Wha-? Wild Knight: Along with half the page...? Maybe the above-mentioned "crashing browsers when trying to save a change" occurred and no one's gotten around to fixing it yet? Midna: To plagiarize Erik, most of the Kirby folder is a load of crap. It doesn't qualify for Nightmare Fuel, it qualifies for "ten year olds might go yuck". I suggest massive pruning, starting with some of the music-based examples (creepy music? CREEPY MUSIC constitutes Nightmare Fuel now?) and the ones about enemies that look like Zero, which were the ones I glanced at before becoming disgusted. Oh me, oh my, Kracko is purple and has an eyeball that looks vaguely like the bloody one that burst out of the giant Zero.
The Gunheart: Okay, who trimmed out the original entries for Chrono Trigger and Lost Odyssey? Did someone just throw darts at a list of what to trim or something? Ray Ayanami: *goes to this page* *oh fucking hell what is this creep that replaced Giygas, I was just starting to get used to Giygas :( * Dr Pepper 42: Seems like someone thought that the distorted face is scarier. Does anyone care to explan how this is better, or should I just change it back to Giygas? Master Hand: T'was me. Blame Great Pikmin Fan. On the TV Tropes Nightmare Fuel page, he mentioned that he was relieved every time he saw Giygas because he was afraid it'd be "Uboa, Monoko, or the ghosts from Sonic 2". Judging from your response, apparently I make a good Jackass Genie. Moral of the story: don't inspire me. Great Pikmin Fan: Sonic adventure two. and I was thinking 'you wouldn't' I will now keep my video game fears secret, well, the fears of people, that is. I am kind of scared of The Hub in Ed Ed N Eddy the misEDventures, for being so barren... but a pic of that would by funny! Master Hand: Sorry if you took it too hard. I just couldn't resist, but I accept that you rather I wouldn't, and I promise not to freak out people for a cheap laugh any more. Again, sorry. Dr Pepper 42: So are we changing it back to Giygas? Lincoln: Finding the Giygas image in the search history is next to impossible. Dr Pepper 42: I really hope the key word there is next. Mr D: To whoever is gramatically cleaning up the page and placing spaces after the asterisks, jolly good show! L Guardinal: I am going to stab the next person who puts a not-for-kids game example on here. High Octane Nightmare Fuel exists for a reason, people. If I see one more Half-Life or Eternal Darkness example... owh: While cleaning up an inappropriate entry I decided to throw in a hidden picture from the Sonic CD sound test, which seems more Nightmare Fuelish than a giant chain chomp. Feel free to change it back if it scares you too much. Alternatively if you can find a way to make the caption box width appropriately wide feel free to do that too. My original caption was "Sonic CD has a secret..." but that didn't seem to result in a wide enough caption box.
I don't really buy the "for kids only!" restriction. How about games meant for adults but with funny content (like cartoony games, or easter eggs), meant as relief not horror, that just happens to be shocking to children for some reason, but mildly so for adults? In that it's not the gore, monstrosity or intended script that discourages children, but the cute parts. halfmillennium: Should Final Fantasy be here or should it be on High Octane? The way I understand it, High Octane is for games which have higher age ratings - a few have been rated higher than Metal Gear titles. Or, as it straddles both, given its own page? A Random Serf: I removed the Halo and Half-Life folders. It should be obvious why. |
