Despite the rather gory premise of the story, some of the adaptations result in making several scenes unintentionally hilarious.

  • The Ocular Gushers. These characters cry about everything. As understandable as it is for the situation to lead to Tender Tears, the manga seems to overdo it.
  • The manga, overall, making the whole series much hammier and narmier. Outside from the above-mentioned crying, the events are much more out there. In the novel, Shinji Mimura quietly raises his hand and meekly asks Sakamochi if he may get up and help an injured Noriko back to her seat. In the manga, Shinji leaps from his desk and spins across the entire room to deflect a bullet, calmly stares at the four guns pointed at his face, and acts all smug. The leap even gets lampshaded.
"I tell you to sit down and listen, and you all take that to mean jump around like demented grasshoppers?"
  • Referring to having sex with a girl (whether with or without her consent) as a 'pink party' comes off a little strange. Especially when Kiriyama says it. Even he seems annoyed saying it, and he's an Empty Shell.
  • In the movie, the overly cheerful girl explaining the rules of the game. Whether it's the too positive attitude or trivial way she does her job, it makes an uncomfortably happy scene laughable.
    • And Kitano is SO HAPPY about her! He even throws a knife at a girl for rudely whispering during it.
  • Shuya riddles Kitano with hundreds of bullets. A few moments later he gets up, calls his daughter, gets pissed at her, throws the phone on the ground and shoots it, eats some cookies and suddenly dies. It is not possible to take this scene seriously
    "Damn good cookies" (dies)
  • The amazingly lemony narration of the novel and its tendency to spout odd non-sequiturs during tense scenes
"Ladies and gentlemen, the amazing Mr Peanut" Shuya, after realizing he accidentally bisected a kid's face
"He looked like one of those sword swallowers you see on TV, "And now ladies and gentlemen I will now spit out what I have swallowed" Takako after jamming an ice pick down Niida's throat after his rape attack
  • Somewhat of a meta example, but in the novel Oda is called an idiot for not remembering that Kazuo shoots people in the head to make sure they die. This falls a little flat when you realize he had no reason to know that Kazuo was the shooter at the time (outside of his gun-type), and he had no real alternatives. The real Kicker though, is that this is easily the SMARTEST version of Oda, indeed it is the only smart version. Speaking of which...
  • Oda in the film is being chased by Kazuo on a bicycle, he actually does a very convincing job of faking his death. He then proceeds to wait for a couple seconds to make sure Kiriyama is out of sight, and then screams "HAHA! I SURVIVED, THANKS TO MY EXCELLENT BULLETPROOF VEST!!!" Kiriyama, not to be outdone in the ham department decapitates him with a sword (while Oda just stares at him and screams, despite being a distance away at first) takes his head, stuffs a grenade into it, and throws it into the building he heard a noise in. Was this even meant to be taken seriously?
