SHINee (pronounced "shiny") is a South Korean five-member Boy Band that debuted in 2008. The members are:
Onew, the nice-guy leader.
Jonghyun, lead vocalist, a mild version of a bad boy.
Key, the arrogant diva.
Minho, the cool and laid back one.
Taemin, the cute youngest member and lead dancer.
They started very young with a colourful R&B image, and have accrued a whole slew of fans. While Jonghyun's and Onew's voices are the most celebrated, every member (as of "Dream Girl") can now sing and dance competently, which separates them from most other boy groups. As of 30 September 2014, with the announcement of Jessica's termination from SNSD, SHINee is now SM Entertainment's longest running group with all original members still together.Korean Discography:
"Is this the reality you wanted?" - Jonghyun during Hello Baby.
Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Taemin, who apparently loses things left and right. He once lost his phone and wasted a lot of time looking for it, and finally just ended up buying a new one. Only to find his old phone again. With the first phone. In the same spot.
Cool and Unusual Punishment: In one episode of Yunhanam, the losers of a tug-of-war game had to go bungee-jumping (Minho, Key, and Taemin).
Cool Big Sis: The object of SHINee's affections in their first music video, "Noona Is So Pretty (Replay)", as well as the whole concept behind Yunhanam. Also a convenient self-insert object for older fans...
Cover Version: This is the case with their songs "Love Like Oxygen" (the original is titled "Show the World"; sung by Danish singer Martin Hoberg Hedegaard), "Forever or Never" (originally by the German glam rock band Cinema Bizarre), "Juliette" (the original was "Deal with It" by American singer Corbin Bleu) and "Hyeya (Y Si Fuera Ella)" (originally by Spanish singer-songwriter Alejandro Sanz).
The Dandy: Key, who likes to make his own clothes, experiment with hairstyles, and do his own eye makeup.
Darker and Edgier: Their "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer" concepts were basically this.
Even more so with the album "Why So Serious?" While the title track and its music video aren't particularly dark, the other tracks on the album are and at times even border on Nightmare Fuel, especially the songs "Nightmare" and "Evil."
Taemin's concept and music video for "Danger" definitely counts.
Jonghyun absolutely loves Michael Jackson so much that Jonghyun used to impersonate Michael's singing voice on variety shows. Taemin too and you can see in the music video for his solo debut single for "Danger".
Fanservice: There are numerous rehearsal fancams of them playing, touching or flirting with each other.
This particular OnKey moment. Key's screaming does not help.
Rumors that the "Sherlock" teaser photos were fanservice for disappearing from the Kpop scene to promote in Japan
This fancam of Taemin's SMTown performance has been doing more than just raising temperatures and eyebrows. ahem.
Fun with Acronyms: Rather than using English letters though, they use Korean syllables. An example would be "A.Mi.Go." which stands for a much longer Korean saying.
For anyone who's curious, the saying is "아름다운 미녀를 좋아하면 고생한다." (Areumdaun Minyeoreul johahamyeon Gosaenghanda), which means "If you love a beautiful woman, you will suffer."
"Y.O.U." standing for "Year Of Us". Very clever
Gag Penis: Onew's dick has been referred to as the "Dubulge" and actually appears quite large. Although, that could just be the skinny jeans.
The rest have their own nicknames for their "bulges" as well.
Green-Eyed Monster: Jonghyun, who consistently holds a grudge against Minho and his tallness and can't seem to stop talking about it.
Heavy Sleeper: Minho, who once slept for a full forty-eight hours.
He's Got Legs: When Taemin crossdressed as f(x) Krystal for Key's "My First Kiss" solo. His slender legs are often praised on their own anyways, and the skinny jeans help.
Hotter and Sexier: Some are calling "Lucifer" this, what with the singing about chains, the hip action in the choreography, lots of shots of the guys touching themselves and/or glaring steamily into the camera, Jonghyun's backless vest, and Minho's shirtless teaser picture.
As of August 2014 and the release of his solo debut mini album, his efforts have definitely paid off. See for yourself. TaeMAN, indeed.
Inelegant Blubbering: Jonghyun when he cries, most noticeable during their first win of "Juliette". Onew and Key also, at times.
The entire band (including Taemin, who up until then was infamous for never crying on camera) was reduced to this after winning their first Artist of the Year award for "Dream Girl." Every time a member tries to give their acceptance speech they're either doing it through tears or they choke up and stop mid-sentence, and even when a member isn't trying to talk they're audibly sobbing in the background.
The Klutz: Onew, though he tends to exaggerate this trait with over-the-top pratfalls. Seems more intentional and for laughs than not nowadays.
Legal Jailbait: In spite of everyone being 18 and over, and all of them having been legal longer in Korea, they still have the image of being "cute, pure, young idols".
Lethal Chef: Taemin, who somehow managed to screw up ramyun by adding honey, milk, and an assortment of other condiments. Minho cursed after tasting it.
Also Taemin and Onew's first attempts to make soup in Hello Baby.
Man Child: Despite being over twenty now, Jonghyun and Onew are the most immature of the group. When forced to dress up in animal suits during an outing on Hello Baby, Onew (who was a cow) went off by himself to explore in the kiddy play area.
Manly Tears: Minho, the few times he cries on stage. He just tears up a bit and stares off into the distance with his chin lifted, the epitome of dignity.
Mistaken Age: When Key first met Onew, he thought Onew was younger and used informal language until he eventually realized Onew was actually two years older than him. He also initially thought Minho was older than him, even though they're the same age.
Jonghyun also thought Onew was younger at first (they're five months apart), and tried to take care of him. Onew just went along with it.
Mr. Fanservice: Jonghyun and Minho are generally seen as the darker, cooler, sexier members of the band, and play this up to appeal to the fans. They're also more likely to show off their muscular physiques.
The Musical: Onew has started participating in these lately, his most recent project being the South Korean adaption of Rock of Ages. Key also participated in the musical Catch Me If You Can, then did Bonnie & Clyde, and now he's doing The Three Musketeers.
Nice Guy: Onew. Basically everyone that knows him have talked about how mild-mannered, caring and courteous he is.
On one variety show, Onew had to announce a title rough and angrily, so he did. Everyone in the room got quiet and were shocked. Including Onew himself.
One Album for the Price of Two: Their Dream Girl and Why So Serious? releases are considered Chapters 1 and 2 of their third album, respectively, but were released separately.
Raised by Grandparents: Key. To be more specific, by his grandmother, but only because his parents were so busy working all of the time.
Rich Bitch: Key, who was raised as an only child in a well-to-do family. His dad is supposed to be a stock-broker, he's been sent overseas to study (more than once, according to some accounts), and his parents could afford to send him to fancy water-sports training camps during junior high school. Sometimes this upbringing shows in his attitude.
Averted with Onew, who was raised as an only child in a well-to-do family (owning a shop or business is considered being well-off in Korea, and his parents are butchers) and attended SM Academy (which is supposedly quite expensive). In spite of this, he's extremely polite and humble.
He Is All Grown Up: Common fan reaction to seeing Taemin in BoA's music video Disturbance as her love interest. The transformation was downright uncanny for some people, and has lead to Taemin's nickname among the English speaking fandom to become TaeMAN.
Their "Sherlock" teaser photos. Also regarded as porn by almost everyone in the kpop fandom AND industry.
Jonghyun's performance of "Internet War" featuring Taemin.
Taemin's music video and his infamous SMTown performance for "Danger". Considering his usual image, many were shocked and the general reaction was "Yes, Taemin, come to the dark side...we have NIPPLES."
They apparently don't even have to be together for this to apply. When Minho was away filming for To The Beautiful You, Jonghyun spent quite a bit of time making fun of him on Twitter, going as far as to ask fans to submit ridiculous photoshopped pictures of Minho to him.
Minho eventually got him back, asking netizens to send in photoshopped pictures of Jonghyun in a hanbok as a sort of competition. Jonghyun seems to have taken it in stride, posting several of them on his own Twitter.
