Go To

  • As stated before, Akita is named after a dog. She's literally a dog for the Committee!
    • Also Akita can be a bitch at times. She's literally a bitch! A bitch is a female dog. And Akita is female and named after a dog!
    • Yamazaki can also mean mountain promontory. Considering the Suicide Forest is near Mount Fuji, this could symbolize that.
  • Takayuki's name can mean happiness...which is ironic considering this is Takayuki. His last name, Anno, means peaceful...and this is also Hideyoshi's last name. This is only one interpretation, however.
  • Hideyoshi himself can possibly be named after Toyotomi Hideyoshi from the stories about Ishikawa Goemon.
  • Naoko's name can mean brain child, something quite fitting for her talent.
  • Hotaru's full name can translate to firefly rainforest, which correlate with one another, but not her as of now...
  • The first kanji of Shinichi's name has an abundance meanings, such as true, belief, extend, iron, wishes, new, gentleman, application, and more, many of which apply to him. The second kanji not so much. But, the second kanji of his last name can be translated as book, some of the objects he has translated.
    • With the Events of chapter two, Shinichi's name gains new meaning. His nickname and the beginning of his name, Shi, can mean death. And now he's dead.
  • Mitsuru can mean light flow, and she can be described as a light in Akita's life. Her last name has been spelled in two ways, as Banda, can mean gang in Spanish, quite fitting for her talent. As Banba, it means place in Japanese.
  • Takara's name can mean treasure or jewel, the very things a treasure hunter would hunt for.
  • Rosalina means rose and her last name Folium can mean leaf in Latin, relating to her talent and the rose petals she throws around to 'purify' her classmates. The name she goes by, Mirabilis, can mean amazing, marvelous, miraculous, and multiple other words in Latin, words that hold meaning to what she appears to be. Rosalina and Mirabilis are also the names of plant genera.
  • Hayato's name can mean brave man, fast man, early man, or early ten, all things that apply to his talent.
  • Kira's name has meanings in Japan and internationally. In Japanese, kirakira means glitter, much like jewels and other precious materials that she works with.
    • With the events of chapter two, Kira's name has more meaning. The word killer can be translated as Kira in Japanese. Considering she tried to kill herself, this is sadly fitting.
  • Cassius can mean narcissistic or vain, much like how he acts. His middle names Ambrose and Irvine add to his personality, meaning immortal and beautiful respectively. His last name, Jacobson, means son of Jacob, and the name Jacob can mean supplanter or follower, possibly hinting at something relating to the talent he shares with Kira.
    • With the events of chapter two, Cassius's name has even more meaning. Most clear of all, Cassius is not actually immortal since he gets executed. And he followed the mastermind's orders like a 'dog' which ended with Shinichi's death. Cassius's execution goes out of its way to make sure he is no longer beautiful. Goddammit, Monokuma, stop looking at this page.
  • Ayano's first name can translate to "Of color; from love" or something along those lines depending on the kanji used. This could symbolize her relationship with Kazuhiko. She does refer to him as her color sometimes.
  • Many interpretations of Miyuki's name contains beauty in their meaning. She is beautiful, which is why Satoshi is always pining after her. Her last name, Kobyashi, is a form of Kobayashi. Kobayashi means small or forest. Miyuki herself is quite short and she was raised in the forest as well as being trapped in one currently.
  • Akemi has a girl's name that means bright and beautiful. He is bright and Akita often calls him cute.
  • Kazuhiko can mean harmonious prince, which is Irony since Kazuhiko is anything but. It can also be related to him being an Expy of Kaede and Matoko. Hiraoka also adds more irony meaning peaceful hill. Kazuhiko's true last name, Yanagi, can translate to willow tree, a tree that represents revival. Considering he dies, this is even more irony. Seriously, Monokuma, stop using irony to kill these kids. The tree can also show growth and flexibility, which may symbolize his relationship with Ayano.
  • Satoshi can mean clear thinking and wise...which is another case of Irony considering who we are talking about. His last name can mean island, which could have hinted that they are on an island built to look like the real Suicide Forest.
  • Yasu can mean something along the lines of peace and quiet. Considering they are one of the more laid back characters, this fits.
    • Yasu's pet rabbit, Mochi, is named after real-life Mochi. They are both sweet and Mochi often helps the students feel better.
  • Kotori Hiraoka has the same last name meaning of Kazuhiko above. Her first name means Bird of Luck, and that is just Irony on top of irony.
  • Chiyo's name is also Irony since it means a thousand years or eternal. She's dead. Requiem just loves killing characters who are named after things relating to life.
