A relatively new manga by Sato Kentaro, who brought you Magical Girl Apocalypse.

Aya Asagiri is a very misfortunate girl. Every day she is viciously bullied at school, only to come home and get beaten up by her older brother, Kaname. After a particularly vicious day, an image of a strange girl shows up on her computer and offers her 'Magical Power'. Before she knows what she is doing, she clicks yes. The next day a pink, toy looking gun shows up in her school locker. It isn't too long before she has to use it, with bloody results...

Watching from the shadows is Aya's mysterious classmate Yatsumura Tsuyuno. She claims to want Aya as an ally, but can she be trusted?

Expect more chaos to ensue.

Tropes depicted in this work

  • 0% Approval Rating: Kaname.
  • Abusive Parents: Aya's father punches her brother Kaname because he got a 98 test score instead of a 100. It's one of the reasons why Kaname tortures Aya.
  • Accidental Murder: Two of the series first deaths were caused by Aya teleporting two bullies, one an attempted rapist, in front of a train nearby with her magical stick.
  • Adults Are Useless: None of the teachers in Aya's school realize she is being bullied despite very obvious evidence. They doesn't seem to care much for Yatsumura absences too.
    • Aya's parents are even worse - none of them realize that Kaname psychically and emotionally torture his sister, even though he ties and strangles Aya while both parents are at home. When Aya and Yatsumura are attacked by the Site Admin and quickly overpowered, their only reaction at the sounds coming from Aya room is to assume "Aya must be so excited finally having friends at home"
  • Action Girl: Most of the girls, though Sayuki stands out.
  • A God Am I: In his POV chapter, Kaname says that he thinks he might actually be a God and views everyone else as inferior.
  • Anti-Hero: Almost all of the Magical Girls, except for Aya, have no problem using their powers to torment, manipulate, torture, or even kill others. The only reason they even count as 'heroes' is because they are against "Tempest" which will cause the end of the world and Kaname, Aya's sadistic brother with a God complex who manages to get his hands on Nijini's magical stick.
  • Arc Words: The Tempest - when a magical girl plugs her magical stick to her computer and loads the Mahou Shoujo site, she can see a countdown to "The Tempest". During majority of the manga, Aya, Yatsumura, Shioi and other magical girls try to find out what "The Tempest" actually is.
  • Art Shift: The art style past chapter 30 or so is notably different from the art in earlier chapters. The colors are much brighter and the characters have sharper, more mature features.
  • Art-Style Dissonance: Has a very cutesy art style. But there's so much blood...
  • Apocalypse How: In the first chapters, Yatsumura muses that the "Tempest" might end in the extinction of mankind but quickly dismisses the idea. She was actually right.
  • Asshole Victim: The first people to die in the manga are one of Sarina's flunkies and an older student she arranged to rape Aya. Both are teleported into the path of an oncoming train.
    • Kaname is caught by a police officer Kiichiro attempting to murder a group of schoolgirls. Kiichiro knocks him off and then abducts and locks Kaname in his apartment, to use Kaname's body as stress reliever.
    • Sarina herself, twice. First Yatsumura used her power to make Sarina slit her own throat with a box cutter just before she could disfigure Aya. Then after she was made a magical girl and caused even more trouble, Sarina got on the bad side of the Site Admin and was (seemingly) killed.
    • Yatsumura captures the creep who murdered her family and slowly tortures him inside her condo Hostel-style. Then he meets a particularly gruesome death when Sarina attacks the condo.
  • Attempted Rape: Sarina and her Gang of Bullies try to set up an older classmate to 'take Aya's first time'. It ends badly for him.
  • Badass: Sayuki Ringa and Asahi Takiguchi. Asahi is one of the only magical girls to survive the onslaught by the Site Admins without losing her composure, and Sayuki takes on the Noh Mask Admin alongside Mikari and wins. Sayuki's introduction shows she is insanely skilled with a sword, even without using magic.
  • Beach Episode: Chapter 32. Happened only because Yatsumuro has only a few days left to live and Aya wanted to make the best out of it.
  • Berserk Button: Just a mere sight of Shioi is enough for Nijini to switch from her usual bubbly and cute personality into a murderous one. Shioi, as a magical girl hunter, murdered Nijini best friend and attempted to kill Ninjini. And Ninjini won't ever let her forget about that.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Kiyoharu doesn't use her abilities to get back at the people who bully her for being a trans girl because she plans to wait until they've grown up and made happy lives for themselves... then she'll destroy them.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Nijimi, the Idol Singer of the hit band, Dog's Play. She's very goofy and her character doesn't seem to fit with the dark tone of the manga, which annoys Yatsumura. It's then revealed that her power is Mind Control, she has several of her fans working for her as servants, and that she plans to kill Shioi for murdering her best friend, who was also chosen by the Mahou Shoujo Site.
  • Big Bad: The Site Admins. When they realize mahou shoujos start to turn against them, they decide to slaughter them all.
  • Big Brother Bully: Kaname, who relieves stress over studying by punching and strangling Aya. In his POV chapter, he says he considers Aya's life as "careless" since she isn't pressured by their father to excel academically and get into Tokyo University. Insulting and abusing Aya is Kaname's way of "making things even".
  • Black and Gray Morality: The Site Admins are evil monsters who appear to be using the magical girls to enact an apocalyptic event in the form of Tempest. But most of the magical girls, despite eventually turning against the Site Admins, have no problem with acts of destruction, torture, and murder.
  • Bland-Name Product: Gougle instead of Google.
  • Brutal Honesty: Yatsumura.
  • The Bullies: Sarina and her two goons, Erika and Kawano.
  • Cast From Life Span: Every time a magical girl uses her stick, her life span is shortened. This leads to Shioi having the organs of a 70-year-old.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: With the exception of Aya, pretty much all the characters have extremely filthy mouths. Especially Yatsumura.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: How Yatsumura deals with the man who murdered her family and threatened to come back for her.
    • In chapter 42, Kaname gets knocked off, locked and raped several times by the police officer, Misumi Kiichro.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Yatsumura's comment that 'No one is home' foreshadows this. Several years before she was found by the Mahou Shoujo Site, she had an ordinary, happy life until one night, a burglar came in and murdered her entire family (father, mother, and unborn sibling because her mother was pregnant at the time). The burglar found where she was hiding and told her not to tell the police, threatening to come back and find her when he got out of prison. And then threatens to come find her again even if she doesn't tell. She spends the next few years of her life in fear that he'll come back. Until she is chosen by the site and given her stick. In which case...
  • Dark Magical Girl: Shioi, and possibly Yatsumura.
    • Sarina
  • Declaration of Protection: In chapter 15 and 16, after Sarina attempts to attack Aya and a weakened Yatsumura.
"I don't care what happens to my body... Even if my body breaks apart... I will definitely... Protect Yatsumura-san!"
  • Devil in Plain Sight: Kaname appears to be this to everyone around him except Yatsumura who says "It's been awhile since I've seen a shady shitface like him". This may be because Kaname is a pretty good actor when around other people.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Sarina infuriates Site Admin by pointing out the rules of Tempest contradict eath other. She gets shot but survives.
  • Domestic Abuse: Aya's and Kaname father beats Kaname to make sure Kaname will get accepted into Tokyo University (because he himself didn't get) while he mostly ignores his younger daughter Aya. Since Kaname is insanely jealous that their father doesn't expect the same from Aya, he regularly tortures her. Their mother seems entirely oblivious to both.
  • Double Standard: Rape, Female on Male: Mikari regularly uses her broomstick to sodomize her butler.
  • Education Papa: Aya and Kaname's father does voice his opinion about wanting Kaname to suceed, but so far his behavior does nothing to justify Kaname treatment of Aya at all.
    • Later chapters show him punching Kaname for not getting a perfect score on his mock exam, and Kaname believes he is so hard on him because he didn't get in a good university and is grooming Kaname to do get accepted into Tokyo University no matter what. It still doesn't justify Kaname's torture of his sister, although it does explain it.
  • Enemy Mine: Shoi, of all people, decides to team up with Aya and Yatsumura in chapter 20, to try and find out how to defeat Tempest.
    • Nijini is usually all smiles and sunshine, unless she comes across Shioi. Aya and Yatsumura have a really hard time stopping Nijini from killing Shoi on the stop.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Mikari's first scene in Chapter 22 shows her forcing her butler to strip, sodomizing him with her magical broomstick, and flying him into the ocean. Yyyyyeah...
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Kaname has a dark and Pragmatic Villainy standard. Sure he ruthlessly uses her younger sister as a punching bag, but he needs her alive. When Aya is taken to the hospital, he says to himself that he'll cry if "his sandbag" ever dies.
    • Yatsumura, Nijimi, and Shioi are unnerved by the insanity present in Kosame's group, despite their propensity for torture and murder.
    • Sarina hates being lied to. [Upon learning the contradiction of what the sticks do and what the site says about Tempest, she points it out directly to a Site Admin.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Each magical girl is represented by a shape. Whenever she uses her powers, her pupils will change into that shape; in addition, the shape will also appear as a "gauge" on her arm that lets her know how much magic she can use until her lifespan finally runs out.
    • Aya: Hearts
    • Yatsumura: Crescent moons
    • Shioi: Stars note
    • Nijimi/ Kaname: Spades
    • Mikari: The letter V
    • Sarina: The Greek letter phi
    • And apparently when a magical girl is reaching the end of her lifespan, their shape changes to an X.
  • Expy: It's easy to look at Sayuki Ringa and suddenly think of Satsuki Kiryuin.
  • Extreme Doormat: Aya.
    • Aya's mother, who watches her husband abuse Kaname regularly. She does seem concerned about her son, but never intervenes. She also seems to suspect something is off about Aya when she's around Kaname, but so far has done nothing.
  • Fat Bastard: The Site Admin with the Buddha face. He kills two of Kosame's allies by sitting on their heads and crushing them to death. Though it's not so much crushed as it is obliterated.
  • Foil: Surprisingly, Aya and her brother, Kaname are this due to being victims of domestic abuse. The only difference is that one is willing to make others suffer for stress relief while the other tries to endure it until finding someone who cares.
  • Fanservice: Chapter 21 includes naked shots of Yatsumura and Aya while taking a shower.
  • Fragile Flower: Due to being constantly bullied and abused, Aya is almost always cowering and whimpering nervously.
  • Freudian Excuse: Kaname is continuously pressured by his and Aya's father to excel academically and get accepted into Tokyo University. In his POV chapter, Kaname recollects being hit in the face by his father after having a 98/100 score on his exam instead of perfect 100. Since neither his father nor mother expect the same from Aya, Kaname considers Aya's life as much easier and careless than his and abuses Aya as means to "make things even".
  • Heel–Face Turn: Sarina shows the beginnings of one as of Chapter 29 after Aya saves her out of the collapsing condo. Chapter 43 further proves her change after Sarina finds and returns Aya her stick.
  • His Name Is...: All the freaking time. Generally, if someone's about to reveal some important information, expect them to get interrupted in some way. It gets pretty ridiculous at times.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Sarina. After using her stick several times to slice apart Aya and Yatsumura, not only she doesn't succeed but she makes the condo collapse below them.
    • Because "The magical girl hunter" aka Shioi used so much power trying to kill Aya and Yatsumura, she winds up in hospital in critical condition. She gets better.
    • Nana and other Site Admins are shocked to learn the magical girls sticks work on them too.
  • Hypocrite: After Aya's Declaration of Protection above, Sarina calls her a homicidal hypocrite, and says Aya is just playing the victim after killing her friends, conviently forgetting that the only reason her friends are dead is because one of them attempted to rape Aya. Aya calls her out on this.
    • During his evil rant in chapter 35, Kaname says he hates people that "blame their lot on others and drag them down out of self-righteous sense of worth" . That is coming from a guy who continuously abuses his younger sister and treats everyone as garbage unless he can gain something from them.
  • Genre Savvy: Yatsumura knew that someone like Nijimi might kill their source of information, so she sets up everything to keep everyone important alive. Yatsumura is also the only one who thought to check whether their sticks power works on the Site Admin as well. They do.
    • While she and Aya are ambushed by Shioi, Yatsumura calls her "The magical girl hunter" to which Shioi reply she doesn't like that name. This confirms Yatsumura suspections that "Magical girl hunter" is in fact her friend, Shioi as she was the only one who knew how Yatsumura calls the mahou shouju who kills other girls.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: The murderer of Yatsumura's family, in very rare instance of being sliced vertically by the side, by Sarina's new power.
  • Idol Singer: Nijimi Anazawa, another magical girl, is this. In later chapters, she takes a break from an idol career and transfers to Aya's school.
  • Jerk With A Heart Of Jerk: Kaname sees a man about to commit suicide and stops him, but only because if he died, he'd probably be seen as a suspect since he was there with him at the time. If it hadn't been for that, he wouldn't have even lifted a finger to help. Later, he acts all courteous around Nijini only to get from her the informations about Mahou Shoujo site and steal her stick.
  • Kawaiiko: Amagai Kosame seems to try and invoke, what with her hair bow, choker, eye-patch, and stuffed animal she carries around, but ultimately subverted with her tendency to cut and clear mental instability.
  • Killer Yoyo: Sarina's Magic Stick is this. It has an Absurdly Sharp Blade, including an invisible one with in a large circle.
  • Lack of Empathy: Sarina. After Aya calls her out on being so cruel to her and asking if she even wondered how she felt, Sarina's response is that she doesn't give a shit how she feels, that just looking at her makes her sick, and she thinks Aya would be better off dead.
    • Kaname, big time. In chapter 1 Aya pleads him to stop kicking her in the stomach or she might stop menstruating. Kaname says he doesn't even care what will happen to her as long she "keeps her position" of being his stress reliever. And it only got worse from here...
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Sarina, Kawano and Erika spend the first chapter making Aya's life a living hell. Erika and the guy she tried to have rape Aya end up run over by a train after Aya defends herself. Sarina ends up slashing her own throat when Yatsumura intervenes in her attack on Aya. Kawano believes that Aya cursed all of them for bullying her and is paranoid that she is next.
    • At the end of chapter 42, Kaname is abducted by Misumi Kiichiro (police officer currently on the case of Naoto Keisuke death), locked in his basement and tortured.
  • Magical Girl: A brutal version of this, but also surprisingly a Reconstruction by showing a real meaning in the Power of Friendship.
  • Magic Wand: All magical girls have "sticks" that they use to wield their powers. They can take the form of a gun, a camera, a phone, a hammer, or a pair of panties.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Sarina knows Nijimin wants to kill Shioi and, in a blackmail sense, gives her the information she needs. Fortunately, Yatsumura took precautions about this.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Kaname. To get informations from Nijimi regarding the Mahou Shoujo Site and his sister involvement, he pretends both to have a crush on Nijimi and to be extremely worried about his sister safety. He later uses these informations to steal Nijini stick. Took up to eleven after he steals the stick and use it to his advantage.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: Yatsumura
''Disgusting people. Snide people. People you hate. Annoying people. People who break the law. People who jeer at others. Violent people. Overly proud people. People who have no sense of morality. People who trouble others. People who hurt others for their own desires. People who threaten others. Once you become aware of others harming you, you should just eliminate them all.
    • Also Kaname.
  • Mood-Swinger: Nijimi. One minute, she's all cute smiles, the next minute she keeps repeating how she plans to kill Shioi, and then she's all smiles again.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Aya is horrified after realizing that she indirectly killed Erika and Kawano by teleporting them in front of the incoming train. Yatsumura snaps her out of it.
    • Asahi, after she nearly killed Kiyoharu while being mind controlled by Kaname.
  • New Transfer Student: Both Nijimi and Shioi transfer to Aya's school (and class). And both did it to be closer to Aya and Yatsumura.
  • Nightmare Face: Just look at the pictures representing the Site Admins. Nana is easily the most terrifying - at least until you meet the rest of Site Admins.
  • Nice Girl: No matter how bad she's beaten, Aya always remains gentle.
    • Beware the Nice Ones: Once Aya gains her powers, she uses them in self-defense. And it helps quite a lot.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Yatsumura takes Nijini stick from her to avoid Nijini killing Shioi but later she leaves it unguarded in a locker room while the team went to the beach. Kaname then uses the opportunity to steal Nijini stick.
  • Nominal Hero: Were she not on Aya's side, Mikari would most likely be considered a Sadist arguably worse than Kaname.
    • While Yatsumura is Aya's best friend, she is known to engage in prolonged graphic torture and has shown Misanthrope Supreme tendencies.
  • Only Sane Man: Sayuki Ringa out of the three other girls Kosame is allied with is the only one who doesn't appear mentally unstable or partially psychotic.
  • Out-Gambitted: Kiyoharu and Asahi team up to get Nijini's stick back from Kaname. After Asahi overpowers Kaname, Nijini attacks her which gives Kaname just enough time to order Asahi to kill Kiyoharu. Kaname then explains he predicted the attack and so he gave Nijini an order to protect him at all cost.
  • Parental Abandonment: Yatsumura's parents are long dead, murdered by a burglar. Since then, Yatsumura lives alone in their apartment.
  • Powers in the First Episode: At the end of the first chapter, Aya demonstrates her teleporting ability.
  • Psychic Nosebleed: Because using magical powers shortens one's lifespan, this almost always happens after a magical girl uses her powers. For a short time, their eyes and hair colour changes too. Surprisingly, using the mind control stick by Kaname seems to have no effect on him besides changing his hair to grey.
  • Plug 'n' Play Technology: All of the magical girls sticks can be plugged into a computer using usb cable. Without the connection between the computer and the stick, the girls can't enter or even find the Mahou Shoujo Site again.
  • Reality Ensues: Two on consecutive chapters. First, repeatedly using a weapon that cuts anything at a long range will mean even the fighting ground you're standing on will be shredded apart and collapse. Second, which the first supports, just because the fighting ground is in a single room doesn't there won't be casualties nearby. And that's not good when that ground is an inhabited multi-story condo.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After Sarina calls Aya a hypocrite, Aya delivers this in response:
"The one playing the victim here is you! All this time, you kept doing cruel things to me! All this time, I had to bear the suffering! You killed my heart a long, long time ago! But I didn't have the courage to kill myself, so I endured the suffering each and every day! Have you considered my feelings!? Even once!? I'm alive, but I think about dying every day! Do you know how that feels!?"
    • In chapter 35, Kaname delivers a very cruel one to Keisuke and using Nijimi stick, he forces Keisuke to kill himself..
  • Reconstruction: As dark and brutal as it is, this is actually an anti-Madoka series.
  • Rich Bitch: Mikari.
  • Self-Harm: Amagai Kosame's stick is a box cutter that she must use on herself, so she may use her blood to heal others. She admits that she cut herself long before the Mahou Shoujo Site came along.
  • Seamless Spontaneous Lie: Kaname is a master of these.
  • Slasher Smile: Kaname after discovering Aya is a magical girl. After he steals Nijimi stick, this is almost his default expression.
  • Shout-Out: Shioi keeps a "Slaughter Note", which as the list of all the magical girls she intends to kill.
    • When Aya asks Yatsumura whether she'll be punished for killing Erika and Kawano, Yatsumura points out that nobody would even believe her she has a magical gun that can teleport people and incidentally, she teleported both Erika and Kawano in front of incoming train. And that Aya should treat her gun "like a notebook where she can write the names of the people who should die"..
      • After the Site Adminsproceed to slaughter all existent Magical Girls, one of them says "You shall not pass" to Kiyoharu and Komane when they try to escape from a multiplying horde of Admins.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: When Sarina shows up at Yatsumura's home, talking about how she plans to make her and Aya suffer, Yatsumura calls her a dumb bitch and tells her that she brought all that happened on herself.
    • Aya later delivers one hell of a speech on what a heinous bitch she is.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Kaname considers himself better than everyone else around him and thinks he might be God. This is a mask he wears against his abusive inferiority with his dad.
  • Social Services Does Not Exist: Nobody seems bothered by a 14 year old girl living alone and frequently skipping classes. When Aya asks her homeroom teacher for Yatsumura adress since she's worried Yatsumura didn't came to school, he just calls her a nice girl and gives her the address immediately without questioning. No one also notices that Aya's nervous behaviour comes from being abused at home and bullied at school, despite obvious evidence (such as Aya's desk and chair which are smeared with words like "Just die").
  • Stepford Smiler: Nijimi has the persona of an adorably energetic and innocent young girl, but it seems to be a facade to mask just how messed up she really is on the inside.
    • To his parents and outsiders, Kaname is a bright student and attentive older brother. In reality, he thinks everyone around him is useless and uses his sister as a punching bag for stress relief.
  • The Stoic: Yatsumura always has the same bored expression on her face.
    • Not So Stoic: However, she does like to joke with Aya, and when the situation is dire, expect her to get serious.
  • Stupid Evil: There are many cruel people out there, but a few of them can be considered stupid.
    • Shioi. She may be the infamous "Magical Hunter", but Yatsumura clearly lampshades that she's too stupid to use her powers correctly.
    • Sarina can also be considered this. After Erika gets killed, she blames Aya (Which is true, but not intentional) and threatens to scar her completely. Cue Yatsumura coming to save the day and turn the razor back at her in the form of attempted suicide. Her other friend Kawano has become smart enough not bother Aya anymore.
  • Super Speed: Asahi Takiguchi's stick apparently gives her this power.
  • Token Good Teammate: Aya seems to be the only one out of the magical girls who has any moral qualms about using their sticks to torture and murder.
  • Time Master / Time Stands Still: Yatsumura's stick has the ability to freeze time.
  • The Chosen One: According to Site Admins, only the girl who uses her stick the most and gathers the most energy with it can survive The Tempest. Sarina quickly points out that the girl who uses her stick enough will die before The Tempest has even started as casting magic takes a huge toll on the girl's body. Later, Aya comes to the same conclusion.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Aya.
  • The Nicknamer: Nijini calls Aya "Ayappi" and Yatsumura "Tsuyuyu".
  • The Sociopath: Kaname is this to a tee. On the outside he is a brilliant student and a loving older brother but in reality he doesn't care about anything or anyone besides himself unless he can gain something from it. As seen in later chapters, he's also very good at manipulating people to do his bidding even before stealing Nijini stick which gives him a complete mind control.
  • The Worf Effect: The minute we learn there are a large number of magical girls working together against the Site Admins half of them are killed by the Admins before we even learn their names or abilities.
  • X Meets Y: Puella Magi Madoka Magica meets Death Note.
