Fairy Tail Side Stories (a.k.a. Fairy Tail Gaiden) is a Fairy Tail spin-off trilogy written and illustrated by Kyota Shibano. Each volume is a post-Tartaros story focusing on a different group of characters from the Fairy Tail universe, and lasts two story arcs:

  • Twin Dragons of Saber Tooth, which focuses on the "Twin Dragons", Sting and Rogue, and their companions from the Fairy Tail guild.
  • Rhodonite, which focuses on Gajeel Redfox both during his membership in Fairy Tail and as an agent of the Magic Council six months after the battle with Tartaros.
  • Lightning Gods, the final story focusing on Laxus Dreyar and the Raijin Tribe as members of Blue Pegasus.

    Twin Dragons of Saber Tooth
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Sting arrives to save Yukino in the middle of the arc from Abyss Horn, the dark guild that kidnapped her with the rest of Saber Tooth arriving to stop the villain from making off with Yukino's keys.
    • Minerva of all characters comes to Yukino's aid to save her from the mind-controlled Pisces. Rouge likewise arrives to help Sting against the main villain who tried to trap him.
  • Callback: The beginning of the spin-off has a two-page spread of the Saber Tooth guild about to trash a Dark Guild's headquarters. Very similar to how Fairy Tail had invaded Phantom Lord's HQ.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Focuses on Saber Tooth, though if you wanna get technical, it mostly just focuses on Sting.
  • Foregone Conclusion: We already know that Yukino will get her keys back and Abyss Horn will be defeated before Fairy Tail meets Saber Tooth again.
  • No Name Given: Unless the one the villain the second arc used to masquerade as the mayor is his real one, his real name is never spoken.
  • Pet the Dog: Minerva gives a little girl a Cooldown Hug when she learns that the girl had been helping her brother's evil plans, even using a Dangerous Forbidden Technique, out of the fear that he'd cast her aside. It's clear that Minerva sees a great deal of herself in the girl.
  • Prequel: There's a small story that focuses on Rouge and Frosh that takes place before the second arc and reveals what caused the argument between Rouge and Sting: Frosh had picked a flower for Rouge as a present despite dirtying his costume (and it getting further ruined when Rouge tried to wash it) only for a starving Sting to unwittingly eat it when Rouge showed him.
  • Siblings in Crime: The villains of the second arc are revealed to be brother and sister.
  • Town with a Dark Secret: Orbstone which is the mining town that Sting, Lector and Yukino go to in the second arc for a job. Yukino suspects something is up and realizes there are marking around the town. Eventually, it's revealed that the townspeople are being controlled by one of two villains while the other is after Sting for his dragon power. After the protagainsts beat them, Minerva reveals that the real Orbstone is further up the road and knew this since she had been there and could tell the one the job requested was fake due to the directions.
  • The Worf Effect: Poor Yukino gets this in both arcs. She gets kidnapped in the first one and had her key stolen and despite trying to defend herself, is quickly subdued until Sting arrives. In the second arc, Pisces ends up getting controlled by Dia.

    Rhodonite
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Vodka Killer tries to use a green mist to dull the senses of the Fairy Tail wizards. But since Gajeel is a Dragon Slayer, he manages to track him instantly and takes him out.
    • The slavery ringleader didn't expect Cobra to actually use his poison power on the kids to stop him. Though it's later revealed it was non-lethal and merely incapacitated the kids.
  • Driven by Envy: This is Mash's motivation for trying to turn against Gajeel as he envies his strength while he always felt weak. Gajeel does acknowledge this but still call him a friend otherwise which has Mash have a change of heart.
  • Feel No Pain: The Rhodnite drug cause the user to feel no pain and get back up to keep fighting. However of course it has a limit and wears out the body over time.
  • Fall Guy: Vodka Killer had planned to use Mash as a fall guy for his drug so as to avoid detection and to fly under the radar of the Magic Council. Indeed it nearly does work when Gajeel initially thinks Mash is the culprit, but Gray is observant enough to notice that the drugs were distributed too rapidly and Mash being broken out of prison at the same time doesn't match the time lines, correctly coming to the conclusion someone higher up is involved.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Gajeel, Levy and Panther Lily leaving Fairy Tail and joining the Magic Council was a given, since they rejoin the guild in the main storyline. Vodka Killer's plan to distribute the Rhodonite was also doomed to fail from the get-go.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Vodka Killer in the first arc who was responsible for the production and shipping of the Rhodnite drug.
  • Human Shield: The boss of the slave ring does this by using the brainwashed kids to prevent Gajeel and Cobra from attacking him. Cobra gets around it by spraying them with some low-level poison. Seemed like a callous move till he reveals he heard the kids hearts and that they were willingly to sacrfice themselves in order to stop the ring leader.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When one of the council officials come to the guild hall to suspect Gajeel of breaking out Mash. The other Fairy Tail members try to object he wouldn't do that..by mentioning his past misdeeds during the Phantom Lord arc.
  • Ship Tease: All over the place in the first arc when it comes to Gajeel and Levy. There's also a bit of it at the end of the second one as well.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Gajeel and Cobra obviously don't like each other, but are in agreement that they won't stand for slavery and families being torn apart.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The slavery ringleader in the second arc. Even gleefully stating he had no qualms about sacrificing the kids he has at the current and planning to go kidnap more later.

    Lightning Gods
  • Ascended Extra: The Raijin Tribe are front and center as the major characters for this story.
  • Call-Forward: Before the release of this sub-series, a brief account of what happened to Laxus and the Raijin Tribe is provided in the Alvarez Empire arc. Now, we finally get to see what happened.
  • Foregone Conclusion: If you're familiar with the original series, Laxus and the Raijin Tribe have to leave Blue Pegasus to rejoin Fairy Tail regardless of their membership.
  • Simultaneous Arcs: The Alvarez Empire arc begins towards the end of this sub-series.
  • Written-In Absence: It is explained where Laxus and the Raijin Tribe were during the Fairy Tail Revival arc: they joined Blue Pegasus.
