Mika-sensei, what are you doing getting stuck in the middle of all the first-years?

Doki Doki School Hours (known as Sensei no Ojikan, meaning "Teacher's Time," in Japan) is a manga by Tamami Momose, which ran from 1997 to 2013 in Manga Life. The series depicts the adventures of 27-year old Suzuki Mika, homeroom teacher of class 2A of Okitsu High School. Because of her diminutive size she often feels overwhelmed by the antics of her students. They form quite an eccentric bunch: we have our fashion-victim, an otaku, a lesbian student with a crush on her teacher, a narcissistic crossdresser and a gay guy obsessing over a classmate who doesn't have a clue and only thinks of sports.

To make things worse, Mika is often quite ditzy herself, so she is not always on top of things. The fact that she still lives with her parents and is spoiled terribly by her father doesn't help much either. Still, the students love her and hold her in high esteem, so things manage to work out most of the time.

The manga has an anime adaptation produced by J.C. Staff, which was broadcast in 2004. The story starts out with typical high school fare, like festivals, sports events and the ever-dreaded "measuring day". Later on there is a change of pace, leading to a series of genre spoofs vaguely reminiscent of Excel♡Saga, only to have things become very serious again by the last episode. The mood and animation style of the anime are very loose and cartoonish and seems to have been influenced by Azumanga Daioh quite a bit, even though the manga it is based on actually pre-dates Azumanga Daioh by a few years. Doki Doki School Hours is highly recommended for viewers who love bizarre characters and dry humour interpersed with some genuinely touching moments.

Do not confuse with Doki Doki Panic or Doki Doki! Pretty Cure and ABSOLUTELY DO NOT confuse with Doki Doki Literature Club!

This series contains examples of:

  • Arranged Marriage: Mika-sensei's uncle sets her up with someone in episode 20. Her class isn't too happy about it.
  • Class Trip: To Honnoji, the last stand of Oda Nobunaga. Suetake riffs on some historically accurate Ho Yay.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Nakayama in episode 11, when Hori-sensei shows up as a student teacher for two weeks. She constantly wonders if Watabe is going to have some kind of relationship with Hori-sensei, and talks to the school nurse about them.
  • Color Failure: Happens to Kudo at the end of episode 3, after his plan to fail the exam and take summer courses with Suetake backfires when the latter actually passes it.
  • Corner of Woe: Kobayashi does this in the first episode when she tells Mika-sensei about how she worked at a fancy restaurant during break, only to then drop an expensive dish she was serving, and having to pay for it all. Mika-sensei ends up joining her in the corner.
  • Crossdresser: Seki. Interestingly, the role of the gay classmate is given to another fairly standard male character.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Kitagawa does this when she's around Mika-sensei, and teases her about her height.
  • Extremely Easy Exam: When her whole class passes their exams with flying colors, the principal scolds Mika Sensei for making her tests far too easy.
  • Foreign Sounding Gibberish: When Minako converses with a Phenotype Stereotype-afflicted female tourist in Kyoto, what is actually heard is "pera-pera-pera", used to indicate that Minako speaks the woman's language fluently.
  • Heroic BSoD: Practically all of the main characters go through one in episode 20 when they hear Mika-sensei may be getting married. Kitagawa is hit particularly hard, and doesn't act like her usual self at all.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Kitagawa, especially when standing next to Mika-sensei.
  • Idiots Cannot Catch Colds: Suetake, being a jock, puts this down to being healthy. But since he's a dumb jock, he doesn't even get the implications.
  • Intra-Scholastic Rivalry: The students in Mika's class have a spirited debate about whether their summer or winter uniforms were better. When Mika-Sensei falls and hits her head, she has an entire Dream Sequence where she imagines this taken to an extreme, where nearly a hundred years later the two factions have become nations at war. When she recovers from the blow to the head and regains consciousness, she urges her students not to fight over such trivial matters.
  • Kissing Cousins: When Hori-sensei shows up, Suetake immediately recognizes her as a second cousin. Some of his classmates think they did this trope at some point, especially Kudo.
  • Lap Pillow: Mika-sensei takes a nap on Kitagawa's lap in episode 5.
  • Lightning Glare: Seki and Kudo do this in episode 19 when both try to get the part of playing a princess for a play.
  • Marshmallow Hell: Sometimes Kitagawa's feelings for Mika get the better of her.
  • The Napoleon: Mika-sensei suffers from this due to her short height despite being the teacher.
  • Nose Bleed: Kudo has a massive one in the first episode when tutoring Suetake.
  • The Ojou: Apparently Minako, given that her family home is huge.
  • Older Than They Look: Mika, who is 27, but looks much younger. It's the source of much of the series' humor, since she has that on top of being a schoolteacher.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: In part 2 of episode 16, Mika is seen walking into a realtor's office with Matsumoto-sensei. All the characters think she's fed up with them due to their selfish behavior, and change their attitudes so that she wouldn't leave. Then they all cling onto her thinking she's still leaving, only to find out Mika was just helping Matsumoto-sensei find a new apartment. The next day, things return to normal, with no one listening to her again.
  • Relax-o-Vision: One instance is used when Suetake is describing how Nakamura got the nickname "old man" despite being 17 years old. It switches to a field of grass when he starts to pull his pants down. When the scene returns to the classroom, Mika-sensei tells Suetake such description doesn't belong in the public.
  • Romantic Ribbing: Kitagawa delights in teasing her crush, the diminutive Mika-sensei, from such antics as offering her Valentine's chocolates, only to dump them on the floor, only to then reveal they were carved erasers and she still has the real chocolates, only to then put them away as the bell has rung and they have to start class, forcing Mika-sensei to wait until lunch break to have them.
  • School Play: The students put on a play of Snow White. The roles are drawn by lottery, leaving Kudo as the Princess, and his oblivious crush, Suetake, as the Prince.
  • Sensei-chan: Mika-sensei, due to her friendliness to her students, along with her short height, causes them to also treat her more like a little girl than their teacher.
  • Ship Tease: A fairly large proportion of the jokes involve someone expressing affection for someone else, with the other characters reacting "is this it?", and of course it's not ...
  • Status Quo Is God: In episode 20, Mika-sensei's mom tells her about her uncle setting up a meeting with a man for marriage. The main characters in her class are hit pretty hard at the prospect that she may quit teaching as a result. Then Mika-sensei shows up at the start of the new term, and explains to them that while the meeting took place, the groom's family felt a woman who couldn't clean or cook would be troublesome, so the marriage plans fell through. However, her class is thrilled to have her back, particularly Kitagawa, who vows never to let her go again.
  • Sweet Tooth: Kobayashi and especially Mika-sensei. Kitagawa will often bribe the latter with sweets, only to then put them out of reach to watch her reactions.
  • Summer School Sucks: Zig-zagged. Most of the students agree that they'd rather not take summer classes. But two students fail on purpose to do just that. Kudo deliberately fails because he banks on Suitake, the guy he's crushing on, to be stupid enough to need the summer classes, and he can be with him. It doesn't work out for him, as Suitake actually studied hard, and passed his exams. On the other hand, ace student Kitagawa deliberately failed because she's infatuated with their teacher, Mika-sensei, and figures this will allow her to spend the whole summer with her, to Mika-sensei's horror.
  • Teacher/Student Romance:
    • Played with regarding Kitagawa and Mika-sensei. Its entirely one-sided on Kitagawa's part, and she often does things to get a reaction out of Mika-sensei because she finds her reactions so adorable.
    • Nakayama fears Watabe is going to do this with the student-teacher Hori-sensei in episode 11. Its just her imagination running wild however.
  • Tempting Fate: In episode 2, Mika-sensei says she won't bother learning basketball rules, since she's just the back up referee. Then the main referee catches a cold and has to stay home that day...
  • Terrible Artist: Chinatsu Nakayama. In episode 6, she wishes to join the manga club since she's a fan of Watabe's manga, and hands him a sketchbook. As the other characters look on, the drawings displayed look like they were drawn by a 3 year old.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Kitagawa in episode 17, when trapped by some tentacles, seems to be enjoying it.
  • Tormented Teacher: Mika-Sensei. She's a Sensei-chan who is 27 years old, though you'd be forgiven for mistaking her for being all of twelve, both in stature and maturity. She is not only the teacher for the Wacky Homeroom, but the unwanting recipient of Huge Schoolgirl Kitagawa's Hot for Teacher advances (not to mention Kitagawa is a Sadist), and is frequently scolded by the principal for not making her lessons and exams difficult enough. In addition, her students include an oblivious jock, his gay Hopeless Suitor, a girl obssesed with a pop star, a crossdresser, an otaku who draws manga pages on the back of his homework, a girl who drifts back and forth between her Weight Woe and her concerns of Perpetual Poverty, and a fifteen year old student who looks and acts like he's 40 years old.
  • Unknown Rival: Hori-sensei towards Kudo, who considers her a threat to his love for Suetake, since she's a second cousin to him. She's completely unaware of it however.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: Episode 8. As can be expected, things don't go exactly as planned for many of the characters, such as Kudo attempting to give Suetake a chocolate and say that its from him, rather than a random girl in their school. Or Kobayashi giving obligation chocolates to all the male characters, and expecting them to give her something on White Day. Which they all either forget, or get something really strange for her.
  • Younger Than They Look: Gen, AKA "Oyaji", who looks and acts like he is in his forties despite being only seventeen.
